This Dean’s Report recognizes our remarkable
alumni and friends who have generously
supported the IU Robert H. McKinney School of
Law during the 2018-2019 fiscal year (July 1, 2018
to June 30, 2019).

put it simply, we cannot
do this without you. IU
McKinney Law relies on private philanthropy to help
provide student scholarships, experiential learning
opportunities, and the ability to recruit and retain

Malad, LLP, decided to make a meaningful charitable
gift, choosing where to give was relatively easy.
“As a firm, we wanted to do something
philanthropic,” says Richard E. Shevitz, a
partner at Cohen & Malad. “IU McKinney is the law
school in our community, so it just made sense.”
But the how—that was another question. Shevitz
and other members of the firm met with IU McKinney
Dean Andrew R. Klein to discuss the possibilities.
Pretty quickly, a winning idea emerged: a fellowship
program that would benefit both law students and
the legal community.
Through the Cohen & Malad, LLP, Fellowship, IU
McKinney student recipients work on cases involving
clients with consumer law matters through the law
school’s pro bono partner organizations or through
the law school’s clinical programs. The Cohen & Malad
Fellow also serves an integral role in planning and
implementing an annual event, designed to educate
the legal community about these issues.
Since the inaugural event in 2016, topics have
included consumer protection, the Holocaust and
social justice, and the opioid addictions crisis. Cohen
& Malad attorneys participate in the event and help identify topics and invite speakers, which they say
has proven to be one of the unexpected joys.
In 2017, for example, Shevitz, a key leader and litigator in the effort to bring social justice to survivors
of the Holocaust and their ancestors, discussed historic cases against companies such as Bayer and
others who directly utilized and benefited from, the slave labor of the concentration camps.
“Working with IU McKinney and the Cohen & Malad Fellow each year is a creative exercise for us,”
Shevitz says. “More importantly, we feel that we are providing students with a valuable opportunity.”
Cohen & Malad, LLP, was founded in 1968 by former Indiana Attorney General John J. Dillon, ‘52, and
Louis F. Cohen, among other individuals, and focuses on a wide range of litigation and business services,
including consumer protection.
“It is an area of the law that is important, but is not often brought to students’ attention during law
school. We wanted to use this program to create a footprint, so that students would see a way forward in
this area of the law,” Shevitz said. “It’s working very well.”

The issues make headlines, and they also pose legal questions that intrigue Nicolas P. Terry, Hall
Render Professor of Law and Executive Director of the esteemed William S. and Christine S. Hall Center
for Law and Health at IU McKinney Law.
Born in England, Professor Terry was educated at Kingston University and the University of
Cambridge, and he first taught at the University of Exeter in England before joining the Saint Louis
University School of Law faculty, and, eventually IU McKinney, where he assumed leadership of the Hall
Center after the late Professor Emerita Eleanor Kinney, founding director of the center, retired.
As a leading authority at the intersection of medicine, law, technology and other issues, Professor
Terry helps make sense of the legal principles at stake. He is frequently called upon to share his
expertise with health law colleagues, news media, and policy makers from the Indiana Statehouse to
Washington, D.C.
As the opioid crisis has emerged as one of recent history’s most devastating public health
issues, IU has taken a leading role in finding solutions through Responding to the Addictions Crisis
Grand Challenges initiative, and Professor Terry is a member of the Grand Challenges Scientific
Leadership Team.
The Hall, Render, Killian, Heath & Lyman Professorship was made possible by a generous gift to
the law school from the late William S., ‘51, and Christine S. Hall. Mr. Hall, founded the firm that is the
namesake of this endowed professorship in 1967. The firm has focused its practice on health law and is
now recognized as one of the nation’s preeminent health law firms.
