Hans Woyda Club training sessions
Several of Emanuel’s most talented
mathematicians converged last Monday
lunchtime for the first of a series of training
sessions. Whilst one of the aims of these
meetings is to improve the school’s performance
in the prestigious Hans Woyda Mathematics
Competition, ultimately we hope that the
students will find inspiration, joy and beauty in
all that they do! This is just one of a vast range of
clubs and societies on offer here at Emanuel. For

Kick-Ass Classical Women
The Classics Master Class kicked off on Thursday lunchtime when a full house attended to listen to Ms Easton talk about “Kick-
Ass Classical Women”. In the male-dominated worlds of Greece and Rome some women achieved notoriety by their violation
of the expected norm. Rather than loyal, and submissive, fertile and weaving, self-effacing to the point of social invisibility,
the ladies Ms Easton presented us with were articulate, inspirational, challenging, violent, manipulative and, in some horrific
cases, even over-educated. In fact, they behaved just like their male contemporaries, hence the Latin term virago ‘acting the
man’! Sappho and Clodia, Medea and the Amazons, Cleopatra and Camilla, a wonderful and entertaining parade of Classical
heroines. NMM4
The Future of the WEB
The next Senior Science Society meeting will take place in the Library on
Tuesday 23 September at 3.55pm. Our guest will be Professor Wendy Hall,
who will be speaking about ‘The future of the WEB’. Our guest is one of the
world’s leading computer scientists - Professor of Computer Science at the
University of Southampton - and has spent her career at the forefront of
developments around the web and digital media. Professor Hall trained as
a mathematician before moving to the fledgling department of computer
science in the mid 1980s, a time of great change and great excitement in
the field. Her team invented a hypermedia system known as Microcosm,
which predates the World Wide Web. She became the University’s first
female Professor of Engineering in 1994. More recently Professor Hall went
on to work with OE Sir Tim Berners-Lee to found the Web Science Research
Initiative in 2006, which aims to foster Web Science as an academic discipline.
She is a Fellow of Royal Academy of Engineering and was made a Dame
in respect to services to Science and technology. Professor Hall is very
passionate in encouraging women in the field of science. The meeting is for
Year 10 -13 students. Tea will be served at 3.50pm. BAR
