The Problem

Bias
An algorithm of the mind on how we see situations and make decisions.

Conscious Bias
Knowing that you hold beliefs about a group.

Unconscious Bias
Ingrained thoughts that lead to errors in how we perceive, reason and make decisions.

                                                                                          SYNC2020.org

How Does It Play Out

Interpersonal Interactions
The interactions between provider and patient is guided by the provider bias. This impacts
diagnosis, warmth, and overall treatment of the client.

Internal Dynamics
Biases impact the team dynamics. Who gets hired, who is promoted.

Bias prevents human beings from unleashing their
                       full potential.

                                                                                         SYNC2020.org

We Can Fix It

What Can Providers Do?
• Know Your Implicit Bias – Take an free online test (Project Implicit). It will reveal gender,
race, age and sexuality biases. (remember that ableism is also a bias)
• Take a Social Inventory – Look around and notice who your intimate friends are.
• Prospective Taking – (think empathy) – This can reduce bias and inhibit unconscious
racism. This can have a positive impact on building rapport and trust with clients.
• Emotional Regulation – Take your own temperature before you enter a client focused
space. BE RESPONSIBLE for the energy you bring in and be reflective on how you treated
  the client.
• Partnership Building – Create a partnership with your client. You are a team working on a
common goal and they should be actively involved and supported.

                                                                                   SYNC2020.org
                                                                                 SYNC2020.org
We Can Fix It

What Can Organizations Do?
• FIRE your overt racist staff!
• Evaluate the racial climate – Who are your leaders? Who do you hire? Promote?
• Investigate complaints of overt and subtle unfair treatment and discrimination
• Keep a close eye on overall client outcomes
• Give focused feedback to staff
• Support solution focused activities
• Promote racial diversity
• Hold decenters accountable
• BELIEVE your clients
• TRAIN TRAIN TRAIN
• Evaluate and continuously take temperatures
• Ensure you hire to match your values and the communities you serve
