SYNERGISTIC DEAL WILL DELIVER HIGH-TECH LENSES
SynergEyes, the leading hybrid specialty contact lens company, has
announced a new partnership with the Brien Holden Vision Institute (BHVI),
the leading translational vision correction centre in the world to deliver
advanced, customised vision correction for myopes and presbyopes.
The exclusive worldwide licensing agreement will enable the
manufacturing of design technologies developed by BHVI, augmenting the
New launch in dry eye sector SynergEyes presbyopic package by offering the latest designs on the hybrid
contact lens platform.
“SynergEyes seeks to improve the quality-of-life for people by delivering
on the hybrid platform innovative lens designs that solve age-old problems
in a new way,” said James Kirchner, president and CEO of SynergEyes.
“Working with a recognised worldwide leader like the Brien Holden Vision
Institute, we plan to bring an extended depth-of-focus lens design onto the
hybrid platform to the global market.”
The BHVI has developed new optical designs that incorporate an extended
depth of focus (EDOF) to provide optimal visual performance from distance to
near with minimal ghosting. The EDOF lens provides a series of smooth, non-
monotonic power variations across the optic zone to deliberately manipulate
multiple higher-order aberrations. The idea is to achieve an extension in depth
of focus that would facilitate a balanced visual performance designed to
satisfy presbyopes with low, medium and high-add requirements.
Next month’s Product Spotlight will be on new eyewear releases for

the patient.
The lens should also be visually inspected
for potential damage, manufacturing defects,
or flaws using a reasonably bright light
source. Patients should be instructed to go
through this routine each time before
inserting their lenses.
With practise, many patients are able to
insert and remove their contact lenses
without using a mirror, but it is probably
better for them to start off using one.
Myopes should be encouraged to come
close to the mirror, indeed, many of them
do this without being prompted. Some
hyperopic patients will benefit from using a
concave mirror.
There should be a definite routine about
which lens is inserted first, to try to avoid
lenses being inserted into the wrong eye.
Even if the lens specifications are identical
right and left, it is advisable not to mix
them up to avoid possible cross infection.
A commonly used method is for the
patient to insert the lens into their right

at this point to allow the lens to settle onto
the eye. Sudden, or premature release of
the lids, may cause the lens to be expelled
from the eye. The finger holding the lower
lid should be released slowly and gently,
and then the ones holding the upper lid.
To remove a soft lens, the lids are held
out of the way as described above. The
forefinger of the dominant hand is placed
on the centre of the lens, and the lens is
dragged downwards. This releases the
suction, which is holding the lens in place,
and a gentle pinching technique may be
employed, using the forefinger and thumb,
to remove the lens from the eye.
If the patient is using single use
disposable lenses, the lens should be
discarded. If the lens is of the re-useable
kind, it should be cleaned and stored. The
routine for this should be shown, using
the technique demonstrated at the
collection appointment and given in the
