St. John Bosco, the founder of the Salesians was born
at Becchi, Italy, in 1815. Don Bosco's life was moulded by hard
struggles and painful experiences of his early life. John Bosco
– commonly called Don (Father) Bosco was ordained a priest
at the age of 26. He opened a home for boys where his mother
Margaret, served as the house keeper. Don Bosco trained his
own staff to assist in the care of the youth. The word 'Salesians'
is from the name of the patron, St. Francis de Sales, a saint
much admired by Don Bosco.
The Salesians dedicate themselves to the care of the
orphans and other boys who are homeless. When Don Bosco
died in 1888, the congregation, which was only twenty years
old, numbered over 1000 members and had spread to seven
countries in Europe and South America. The greatest gift Don
Bosco has left posterity is his unique way of educating,
(Preventive System) a method that was inspired by his
magnificent obsession. 'It is enough to know that you are
young and abandoned for me to love you very much'. The main
motive of the Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB) is to be 'signs and
bearers of God's love to the young'.
10 DBC-Dharmapuri 2018-2019THE DAWN OF DON BOSCO COLLEGE The worldwide society of the Salesians of Don Bosco came into existence in the nineteenth century to serve poor and needy youth all over the globe .The year 2015 marks the second centenary of the birth of its saintly founder Don Bosco. The year 2006 which marked the first centenary of the presence of Don Bosco works in India also put Dharmapuri on the Salesian worldwide map with the inauguration of Don Bosco Vazhikaatti or Extension Services. Permission for the College was obtained from the Government and the University by the initiative of Rev. Fr. Johnson Antonysamy, SDB, the Rector and Rev. Fr. C.M.Varghese, SDB, the first Principal. Established in 2007, it is the first and only minority institution for boys and girls under Periyar University, Salem. The College is situated on Sogathur Adhiyaman Bypass Road, 5 kms from Dharmapuri town. Built in a serene and calm environment, the College provides a holistic ambient for the growth of the students . The Academic journey of the College commenced with 5 undergraduate courses, 9 teaching staff, 3 support staff and 250 students. The institution now boasts a handsome number of over 2500 students, 106 teaching staff and 30 non-teaching staff. The vast majority of our students hail from Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts, while students from other 2018-2019 DBC-Dharmapuri 11
parts of Tamil Nadu, Andamans and North East also are accommodated. The College takes pride in educating numerous first generation graduates. The medium of instruction and evaluation is English. The College also provides separate hostel facility for women and excellent bus services to the remote villages. From its humble beginnings, the College has grown considerably as the result of collective efforts of many, including Salesians, staff and well wishers. In the past few years significant additions have been made to the infrastructure with an open auditorium, state of the art computer labs, science labs, purified drinking water and a modern canteen. Today we have 11 under graduate, 8 post graduate courses and 4 M.Phil courses. A three year degree course in Digital Print Media is one of the unique courses offered by the College. We have national level outstanding performance in Academics, Culturals, Seminars, Sports, and the like. Considerable growth has taken place in skill development courses like Computer Applications, Communication Skills and Placement Training. Service activities like N.S.S., R.R.C., Y.R.C., Nature Club, celebration of National and Regional festivals enhance the quality of campus life. The Don Bosco College of Education (B.Ed.) inaugurated in 2012, under the same management, has a given a further boost to the aspirations of students to become professionally qualified teachers. 12 DBC-Dharmapuri 2018-2019

imparting knowledge – symbolized by a book, thus influencing
the world. The words EXCELLENCE and EMPOWERMENT
indicate human and academic excellence, the hallmark of Don
Bosco College which enables all students to empower the
world in which they live.
The saying “Mens sana in corpore sano” means “A healthy
mind in a healthy body.” This is an abbreviation of the
statement, “your prayer must be that you may have a sound
mind in a sound body” from the Latin poet Juvenal giving a
prescription for happiness. A healthy body contributes greatly
to a happy mind and spirit leading to holistic education.

RULES AND REGULATIONS
I. ATTENDANCE
1. The working day is divided into five periods, each of
sixty minutes duration.
2. Attendance shall be taken every hour whether it is
lecture or practical classes of any kind prescribed by
the College time-table.
3. Students may lose their attendance if they come late
to the class.
4. No student may absent himself/herself from
College without applying for leave.
5. Application for leave should be made beforehand to
the Head of the Department.
6. When absence is on account of unforeseen causes,
an application for leave must be submitted at the
earliest on return to College.
7. In case of sickness medical prescription should be
attached.
8. Attendance on the reopening day is compulsory.
Absentees will be penalised.
9. University directions with regard to attendance:
a. 75% and above are eligible for all exams, both
regular and arrears.
b. 65% - 74% are eligible for all exams, both regular
and arrears only with condonation fee.
2018-2019 DBC-Dharmapuri 51c. 50% - 64% are not eligible to write any current
semester papers. They must pay condonation fee
and may write only the arrear exams.
d. 49% and below are not eligible to write any exam and
they should get re-admitted and repeat the
semester.
e. Management directions with regard to attendance
marks
96% - 100%= 5 Marks
91% - 95% = 4 Marks
86% - 90% = 3 Marks
81% - 85% = 2 Marks
75% - 80% = 1 Mark
10. With regard to examinations, norms given by the
University will be followed strictly.
II. GENERAL DISCIPLINE
1. Students must conduct themselves in such a manner
as not to bring discredit to the College or to themselves.
2. Students are responsible for the good name of the
College inside and outside the College Campus.
3. Students should wear the Identity Card around the
neck and bring the College calendar on all working
days.
4. The medium of instruction and language of
communication is only English. The students are
expected to converse in English.
5. Students are not allowed to loiter in the verandahs
during the class hours.
6. Students should move in silence after the assembly
and interval.

or staff room without permission.
8. Students may not conduct any meeting without the
permission of the Principal.
9. Students should abstain from active participation in
party or communal politics. Students are not
permitted to participate in photographic modeling,
fashion shows, stage shows or any TV programmes
without prior permission from the Principal.
10. No student shall be a member of any association
unconnected with the College, without the permission
of the Principal nor shall a student take part in any
anti-social or subversive activities.
11. No student shall leave the College premises during the
College hours without the permission of the Principal.
12.Students are responsible for the cleanliness of the
campus.
13. RAGGING IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED. 'Students found
guilty shall be punished with imprisonment for a term
which may be extended to two years and shall also be
liable to a fine up to Rs. 25,000.' (G.O) (Refer
Appendix)
III. CODE OF CONDUCT
1. Students should get special permission if they wish to
stay back after College hours.
2. A healthy relationship should be maintained between
boys and girls. A boy and a girl should not be found
together in isolated places or in classrooms.
2018-2019 DBC-Dharmapuri 533. Students of the College are not permitted to get
married to each other during the course of their
studies in the College. Students doing so will be forced
to discontinue from the College.
4. Cell phones, cigarettes, narcotic substances, alcohol
and unauthorized reading materials are strictly
prohibited.
IV. DRESS CODE
1. Girls are expected to wear modest outfits avoiding
sleeveless tops, mini skirts, shot chudis, leggings,
shirts and pants.
2. Boys are expected to dress neatly avoiding T-shirts,
cooling glasses and jeans.
V. CONTACT DETAILS
Students should report to the office whenever they change
residence or phone numbers.
VI. Scholarships and Fee
l The following scholarships are provided:-

4. Merit Scholarship
(Any other Scholarships provided by the State and
Central Government from time to time)
5. Don Bosco Foundation Scholarship
6. Don Bosco College Scholarship
7. Other Private Scholarships availed by the College
from time to time
l Parents and Students are requested to pay the Fee on
time and cooperate with the Management.

Ragging: Prohibition, Prevention and Punishment
The University Grants Commission vide its letter no F.1-16/2007
(CPP-II) dated June 17, 2009 has reiterated the ban on ragging of
students in Institutions of Higher Learning. The students are
therefore directed to strictly desist from any kind of ragging.
Forms of Ragging
Display of noisy, disorderly conduct, teasing, excitement by
rough or rude treatment or handling, including rowdy,
undisciplined activities which cause or likely to cause
annoyance, undue hardship, physical or psychological harm or
raise apprehensive fear in a fresher, or asking the students to do
any act or perform something which such a student will not do in
the ordinary course and which causes him/her shame or
embarrassment or danger to his/her life, etc.
Punishment for Participation in/or Abetment of Ragging
1. Cancellation of admission.
2. Suspension from attending classes.
3. Withholding/withdrawing scholarship/fellowship and
other benefits.
4. Debarring from appearing in any test/examination or other
evaluation process.
5. Withholding results.
6. Debarring from representing the institution in any national
or international meet, tournament, youth festival, etc.
7. Suspension/expulsion from the hostel.
8. Rustication from the institution for periods varying from 1 to
4 semesters or equivalent period.
9. Expulsion from the institution and consequent debarring
from admission to any other institution.
10. Fine up to Rs. 25,000/-
