COMMUNITY WALKS
Thanks to the generous funding of WATCH, Northeast Georgia Health System (NGHS) employees participated
in various community outreach activities, including sponsoring and attending annual wellness walks for
March of Dimes, the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association.
WATCH WALKWAY IN BRASELTON
WATCH helped create a destination of hope, healing and wellness at Northeast Georgia Medical Center
(NGMC) Braselton by funding the installation of a ¾ mile walking trail. Enjoyed by visitors, staff and our
community, the WATCH Walkway is a testament to our generous employees and their desire
to improve health beyond the bedside.
CHANGE GRANTS
Change Grants are a vehicle for employees to submit their improvement ideas to the NGHS Foundation
for funding consideration. WATCH funds selected projects designed to enhance the patient experience,
improve employee morale or impact patient and family satisfaction.
AMONG THE FUNDED CHANGE GRANT PROJECTS:
•Donate Life Flagpole at NGMC Gainesville: In April 2019, a new flagpole was installed on the NGMC
Gainesville campus, funded by employees through the NGHS Foundation. The flagpole flies a Donate
Life flag each time one of our patients gives the gift of life by becoming an organ or tissue donor.
• Caring Kids Visit Long-Term Care Residents: Residents of NGMC’s long-term care facilities, New Horizons
Limestone and Lanier Park, received gifts from special visitors thanks to the generosity of NGHS employees.
More than 20 children of employees and their friends visited the facilities on July 23 to interview the residents
and to ask them what items they wished for. Hundreds of items were purchased, then distributed, by the children
when they returned on July 31. A wide variety of items were shared – snacks, blankets, board games,
self-care items and more – but the true gift was the time the children spent visiting with the residents.
• Mobile Device Charging Stations: Thanks to employee donors, NGHS was able to install new mobile device
charging stations throughout our four hospital campuses for patients and visitors to use while in waiting rooms.

Foundation by the family of Henry S. Jennings, Jr., MD. Dr. Jennings was truly a local pioneer and founder of
the healthcare system we enjoy today in Gainesville and Hall County. The Jennings Lectureship series provides NGHS embraces that kind of philanthropic and innovative thinking, and will continue to grow the GME program
opportunities to advance medical education in our region that otherwise would not be available – presented by and other expansion plans across northeast Georgia. Currently, community members, partners and sponsors

the future of health care in our region through philanthropic support opportunities.
ADVANCING GRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION
In its inaugural year, our GME program welcomed 26 physicians to NGMC. In November 2019, community
leaders, supporters, GME faculty, physicians, senior leadership and special guests were treated to a hard
hat tour of Medical Park 2, which was being renovated to expand the GME program and provide more
physician space. New facilities include the Lecture Hall, Learning Labs, Service Pods, the Residents’
Lounge and Consultation rooms.
The NGHS Foundation has committed to securing $4 million to support this expansion, and as a result, several
donors have invested in the expansion. Currently, naming opportunities are available at Medical Park 2 and on
the ground floor of NGMC Gainesville.
THE CAROL H. BURRELL PROFESSORSHIP IN MEDICAL EDUCATION
Thanks to the generosity of Dot and Don Pirkle’s lead signature gift, the NGHS Foundation has endowed GME’s
first professorship: The Carol H. Burrell Professorship in Medical Education. This endowment was created to
honor president and CEO, Carol Burrell (pictured above right), a visionary leader of NGHS. The professorship
was also supported by matching gifts from the NGHS Auxiliary, Philip & Mary Hart Wilheit, Jack & Janice Frost
and Billy R. Jones. Because of the supporters’ belief in educating healthcare leaders of tomorrow, the GME
program will continue to honor Burrell and her lasting legacy by creating and implementing advanced learning
programs that will serve the resident physicians, patients and the mission of GME through the professorship.
NGMC LUMPKIN RECEIVES FIRST GIFT
The Vulcan Foundation, a great community partner and supporter of Northeast Georgia Medical Center
(NGMC) Braselton, donated the first philanthropic gift to NGMC Lumpkin to purchase much needed bedside
ultrasound equipment.

COURTYARD WATERFALL DEDICATED AT NGMC BRASELTON
In May, Northeast Georgia Medical Center Braselton celebrated the dedication
of the Courtyard Waterfall, made possible by a signature gift to the Northeast
Georgia Health System (NGHS) Foundation by NGHS Trustee Jane B. Smoot
and her husband, Chris. The beautiful water feature creates a naturally serene
place for patients and families to rest, reflect and re-energize.

LUNG NAVIGATION AND CANCER SERVICES
NGMC FIRST TO OFFER NEW LUNG NAVIGATION SYSTEM FOR CANCER PATIENTS
Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) Braselton became the region’s first hospital to offer a new,
minimally invasive diagnostic technology for patients with pulmonary nodules that are suspicious for lung
cancer. Navigational bronchoscopy uses a system made possible by funding through the Northeast Georgia
Health System Foundation. This innovative technology allows easier access for sampling of suspicious lung
lesions and will improve both patient outcomes and lung cancer survival rates.
NGMC’s Cancer Services program offers many new and innovative cancer treatments, providing award-winning
treatment for our community. In fact, NGMC’s program was the only one in Georgia - and one of only 24
programs in the nation - to receive the 2018 Outstanding Achievement Award by the American College of
Surgeons Commission on Cancer, its highest level of recognition based on standards of care assessed during
an accreditation survey.

HOSPICE HELPS
In 2016, Maria and David were happily celebrating their son’s 10th birthday and the news that they were
expecting their second child. Filled with enthusiasm, Maria and David began preparing for their growing family.
During a routine ultrasound, excitement changed to fear when an abnormality was discovered. After visiting
with a specialist, Maria and David were given news that no parent ever wants to hear. Their unborn child had
an untreatable, terminal birth defect. Overwhelmed and heartbroken, they were referred to Hospice of NGMC
to guide them through the remainder of the pregnancy and birth. Since then, Maria and David have welcomed
a new son, Ethan, into the world.
“Hospice was there for us the moment we arrived,” said Maria. “They helped us navigate the hardest time in
our lives. We couldn’t have done this without them.”

MOBILE SIMULATION UNIT BEGINS SERVICE IN THE COMMUNITY
Thanks to funds raised through the community and the 2018 Medical Center Open, Northeast Georgia Health
System’s (NGHS) new mobile simulation unit has arrived and will hit the road in 2020.
NGHS SIMULATION TEAM HONORED
The NGHS Simulation Team received the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation’s most
prestigious honor, the Laufman-Greatback Award, which recognizes an individual or group that makes a unique
and significant contribution to the advancement of healthcare technology and systems, service, patient care or
patient safety. The new mobile simulation unit will provide technology and mobility, furthering quality health care
and training in our region.
“Using the simulation unit, we’re able to build
a bank of experience that we can draw from in
a time of real crisis without the risk of harming
actual patients,” said Dr. Michael Appel, chief
patient safety officer for Northeast Georgia
Health System. “Simulation enables us to refine
both our technical and teamwork skills, so we
can raise the bar and deliver the highest quality
health care possible.”
