weather. You will be provided with a polo and a cap. Bring a rain jacket to protect you from the spray and wind. It can be
cooler out on the water so wearing layers is recommended.
Long hair should be tied back and don’t wear excessive jewellery (i.e. rings, bracelets or necklaces) that could get
tangled up whilst you are sailing. It’s important to have your hands free to get on and off the boat and to be able to sail.
It’s best not to bring mobile phones or other valuables onto the boat as they may get damaged or lost. You can leave
these with your checked in items in the cloak room.

OUR SAILING WATERS ON PORT PHILLIP

The race will be a tower start on a course sailed around SYC fixed marks in Port Phillip in front of Sandringham Yacht
      Club with a tower finish.

RACE MANAGEMENT

As a highly competitive racing yacht club, SYC has a highly capable and well-resourced race management team. Your
      race management and support team for this event is;

Race Officer and Handicapper Rowan Simpson
      Race Officer Peter Taylor
Race Management Eryl Harris and Christine Walsh

Out on the race track you will notice a number of our well-equipped race management vessels. Led by our flagship
Race Management vessel “Endeavour IV”, a Steber 43 Flybridge cruiser, these vessels will be monitoring the race and
performing roles ranging from media to safety duties.

      SHOWERS

Should the need arise, showers are available at the Ken King Centre – please bring your own towel.

      SUN SMART & MOTION SICKNESS

Ample sunscreen and motion (seasick) sickness tablets will be available to all at registration. If you do feel unwell during
the on water component of this event, please communicate with your skipper who will assess your condition.

      ALCOHOL

Alcohol and refreshments will be provided post sailing. There will be no alcohol provided pre sailing or on board the
yachts during the event. Water and Gatorade will be provided both pre event and on board and we encourage you to
      keep hydrated.

      WIND AND WEATHER

Weather is an important factor of sailing, not so much the temperature or how sunny it will be, but the wind strength
and direction. Keelboats are heavily dependent on the direction of the wind for both which direction they can sail and
      how fast they will go.
The most important information is the forecast of both direction and strength of the wind.
Whilst we are hopeful we get good weather for our event, there are limits and conditions that are not suitable for
people who are new to sailing, or even experienced sailors wanting a relaxing time on the water. Rest assured, the race
management decision makers involved in our event have spent decades sailing on Port Phillip and their judgement will
guide any decisions on the day. The race officers’ decision will be the overriding and final one.

NEW TO SAILING - SOME TIPS FOR BEGINNERS…

›› Be careful not to stand on ropes or sheets and don’t wrap them around your hands. Keep your hands and fingers
            clear of blocks and winches.
›› Hold onto something fixed on the boat. ‘One hand for you and one hand for the boat’ is a common saying.
›› When moving around the boat, keep your knees bent to help absorb the movement of the boat.
›› Don’t leave a mobile phone (or even a wallet) in your pocket as they may be lost overboard.
›› Follow the skipper’s instructions and ask questions if you don’t understand.
›› Don’t drop or throw anything overboard.
›› Let the skipper know if you have an illness or injury that might influence your ability to participate.
›› Contact the Club beforehand if you would like to discuss exactly what the activity involves and what your limitations
            might be.
›› Your skippers will give you a safety briefing before you head out…. if unclear, be sure to ask them to clarify.
         ›› Have fun!

LUNCH IN THE PORT PHILLIP ROOM, SYC CLUBHOUSE

Following sailing, a sit down lunch will be provided in the SYC Port Phillip Room. Over lunch enjoy the Clubs hospitality
and the best performed teams will receive their silverware.
