GRAND PRIX OF LONG BEACH
HISTORIC TRANS AM CHALLENGE
1960s-70s American muscle cars roar back
Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach fans will get an exciting look at the
American muscle car power that defined the golden age of Trans Am racing
when the historic machines race for the first time on the city streets in the
Historic Trans Am Challenge.
The 20-minute race begins at noon Saturday, April 14, with practice and
qualifying on Friday.
Trans Am, short for the Trans-American Championship, started in 1966 and
runs today at selected tracks across the U.S. The cars racing here will be from
the series’ original era, 1966-72, including high-horsepowered Ford Mustangs,
Chevrolet Camaros, AMC Javelins, Pontiac Firebirds and more. The drivers of
that era were a veritable racing “Who’s Who:” A.J. Foyt, Jim Hall, Dan Gurney,
Mark Donohue, Parnelli Jones and George Follmer, among others.
“It’s exciting,” said Jones of the Historic Trans Am cars coming to Long
Beach. “Back then, the competition was so keen between the drivers, car
manufacturers and even the tire manufacturers.”
The unique event will be sanctioned by the Historic Motor Sports
Association (HMSA).
“The invention of the ‘Pony Car’ with the introduction of the Ford Mustang
in 1964, high performance marketing and the need to ‘win on Sunday/sell on
Monday’ all came together in the Trans-American Championship,” said Cris
Vandagriff, president of the HMSA. “There were more factory teams competing
in Trans Am than in NASCAR, with Ford, Chevrolet, American Motors,
Plymouth, Pontiac and Dodge all slugging it out on the track.
“Since in the late 60’s and early 70’s, Southern California was the capitol of
car culture in the U.S., then what better place to showcase that era than the
Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach with the Historic Trans Am Challenge.”

HECTOR CADEMARTORI: OFFICIAL RACE ARTIST
Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina,
where Juan Manuel Fangio was a
household name, Cademartori was first
influenced in racing in the mid-1960s by
the European tradition and great drivers
such as Dan Gurney, Jackie Stewart,
Pedro Rodriguez and Graham Hill.
He started out drawing Lotuses,
BRMs and Ferraris in his note pads at
school. “I just always wanted to be in
racing,” Cademartori says. “I wasn’t a
mechanic, designer or driver, so I used my
art work to be in the racing business!”
In 1983, he moved to the U.S. after high school to specialize in motor
racing art. His first official race poster in the U.S. was for the 1984 Toyota
Grand Prix of Long Beach!
His client list includes racing teams, corporations, magazines and private
commissions such as Indy 500 yearbook covers, Lucas Oil, The Mitty,
Sportscar Vintage Racing Association and Auto Club Speedway posters,
national automobile and motorcycle magazines and book publishers, as well as
many manufacturers.
Cademartori races his 240Z in two vintage racing associations and
currently lives in La Verne with wife, Florencia.
His art can be viewed at authorsandartists.com.
