FIFTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST SEPTEMBER 5, 2021
Jesus seems to show partiality in his first response to the Syrophoenician woman in today's gospel. Was
he testing her faith in saying Gentiles don't deserve the goods meant for God's children? Or was he
speaking out of his human worldview, but transcended those limits when she took him by surprise with
her reply? Either way, the story tells us that God shows no partiality. Everyone who brings her or his
need to Jesus is received with equal honor as a child and heir.

*CONFESSION & FORGIVENESS
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, + and of the Holy Spirit.
 Amen
Almighty God, the secrets of our hearts are not hidden from you. We stand in your
presence knowing that we have felt hatred toward others. We stand in the presence
of your mercy knowing that we have made bad choices in our lives. Cleanse the
thoughts of our hearts as we confess our sin.
 Silence for reflection
 Merciful God,
we confess that we cannot save ourselves from the power of sin, but we
still trust in ourselves and not in you.
 Gracious God,
forgive the envy we have of others in their happiness.
 Merciful God,
forgive our indifference to those around us that need our help.
 Gracious God,
forgive the things we have done to harm others and the things we have
failed to do to prevent harm.
Have mercy on us, O God,
forgive our sins, renew our lives and lead us to faithful service in your holy
    name. Amen
God is gracious and merciful, forgiving sins without number, welcoming all to the feast,
and giving us a place among the saints. Through Jesus Christ, who went to the cross
for our sake, we are forgiven and made whole. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted,
forgiving one another as God in Christ forgave you. (Ephesians 4:32)
 Amen

*GREETING & PRAYER OF THE DAY
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit
    be with you all.
  And also with you.
Gracious God, throughout the ages you transform sickness into health and death
into life. Open us to the power of your presence, and make us a people ready to
proclaim your promises to the whole world, through Jesus Christ, our healer
and Lord; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and
          forever.
        Amen

Say to those who are of a fearful heart,
     “Be strong, do not fear!
  Here is your God.
     He will come with vengeance,
  with terrible recompense.
He will come and save you.”
  5
Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened,
     and the ears of the deaf unstopped;
  6
then the lame shall leap like a deer,
and the tongue of the speechless sing for joy.
For waters shall break forth in the wilderness,
     and streams in the desert;
  7a
the burning sand shall become a pool,
and the thirsty ground springs of water.
      The word of the Lord.
      Thanks be to God.

PSALMODY – read responsively based on Psalm 146:1-7
      Hallelujah! Praise the LORD, O my soul! I will praise the LORD as long as I live;
I will sing praises to my God while I have my being.
Put not your trust in rulers, in mortals in whom there is no help.
When they breathe their last, they return to earth, and in that day their thoughts perish.
I will praise the Lord as long as I live. Hallelujah!

Happy are they who have the God of Jacob for their help,
      whose hope is in the LORD their God;
      who made heaven and earth, the seas, and all that is in them;
      who keeps promises forever.
I will praise the Lord as long as I live. Hallelujah!

The Lord gives justice to those who are oppressed,
and food to those who hunger.
  The LORD sets the captive free and opens the eyes of the blind;
and lifts up those who are bowed down.
I will praise the Lord as long as I live. Hallelujah!

NEW TESTAMENT READING JAMES 2:1–10,14–17
My brothers and sisters, do you with your acts of favoritism really believe in our glorious
Lord Jesus Christ? 2For if a person with gold rings and in fine clothes comes into your
assembly, and if a poor person in dirty clothes also comes in, 3and if you take notice of
the one wearing the fine clothes and say, "Have a seat here, please," while to the one
who is poor you say, "Stand there," or, "Sit at my feet," 4have you not made distinctions
among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts? 5Listen, my beloved brothers
and sisters. Has not God chosen the poor in the world to be rich in faith and to be heirs of
the kingdom that he has promised to those who love him? 6But you have dishonored the
poor. Is it not the rich who oppress you? Is it not they who drag you into court? 7Is it not
they who blaspheme the excellent name that was invoked over you?
   8
You do well if you really fulfill the royal law according to the scripture, "You shall love
your neighbor as yourself." 9But if you show partiality, you commit sin and are convicted
by the law as transgressors. 10For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has
become accountable for all of it.
   14
What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have
works? Can faith save you? 15If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, 16and
one of you says to them, "Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill," and yet you do not
supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? 17So faith by itself, if it has no works,
 is dead.
  The word of the Lord.
  Thanks be to God.

  Glory to you, O Lord!
  24
From there Jesus set out and went away to the region of Tyre. He entered a house and
did not want anyone to know he was there. Yet he could not escape notice, 25but a woman
whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately heard about him, and she came and
bowed down at his feet. 26Now the woman was a Gentile, of Syrophoenician origin. She
begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter. 27He said to her, "Let the children be
fed first, for it is not fair to take the children's food and throw it to the dogs." 28But she
answered him, "Sir, even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs." 29Then he
said to her, "For saying that, you may go — the demon has left your daughter." 30So she
went home, found the child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.
   31
Then he returned from the region of Tyre, and went by way of Sidon towards the Sea of
Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis. 32They brought to him a deaf man who had an
impediment in his speech; and they begged him to lay his hand on him. 33He took him
aside in private, away from the crowd, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spat and
touched his tongue. 34Then looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, "Ephphatha,"
that is, "Be opened." 35And immediately his ears were opened, his tongue was released,
and he spoke plainly. 36Then Jesus ordered them to tell no one; but the more he ordered
them, the more zealously they proclaimed it. 37They were astounded beyond measure,
saying, "He has done everything well; he even makes the deaf to hear and the mute to
 speak."

  Praise to you, O Christ!

                        8
HOLY BAPTISM FOR LEO JAMES HAGGE
P = Pastor R = response of the parents and sponsors
          C = Congregation
P: God, who is rich in mercy and love, gives us a new birth into a living hope through the
sacrament of baptism. The power of sin is put to death in these waters, and we are raised
with Jesus Christ to new life. We are united with all the baptized in the one body of Christ,
anointed with the gift of the Holy Spirit, and joined in God’s mission for the life of the world.
P: Called by the Holy Spirit, trusting in the grace and love of God, do you desire to have Leo
   baptized into Christ?
R: We do
P: As you bring Leo to receive the gift of baptism, you are entrusted with responsibilities: to
live with him among God’s faithful people, bring him to the word of God and the holy
supper, teach him the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments, place in his
hands the holy scriptures, and nurture him in faith and prayer, so that he may learn to trust
God, proclaim Christ through word and deed, care for others and the world God made, and
work for justice and peace among all people.
Do you promise to help Leo grow in the Christian faith and life?
R: We do.
P: People of God, do you promise to support Leo and pray for him in his new life in Christ?
C: We do
P: I ask all of you gathered here today, Leo’s parents, sponsors and faith community, to
profess your faith in Christ, reject sin, and confess the faith of the church.
Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God?
C: I renounce them.
P: Do you renounce all the powers of this world that rebel against God?
C: I renounce them.
P: Do you renounce the ways of sin that draw you from God?
C: I renounce them.
P: Do you believe in God the Father?
C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
P: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?
C: I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by
the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was
crucified, died, and was buried; He descended into hell. On the third day he
rose again; He ascended into heaven, He is seated at the right hand of the
Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

                                                9
P: Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?
C: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of
saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life
   everlasting. Amen
Prayers are offered with each petition ending:
Lord in your mercy… hear our prayer.

P: The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.
P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
C: It is right to give our thanks and praise.
P: We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and
by your Word you created the world, calling forth life in which you took delight.
Through the waters of the flood you delivered Noah and his family, and through the
sea you led your people Israel from slavery into freedom. In the river Jordan your Son
was baptized by John and anointed with the Holy Spirit. By the baptism of Jesus’
death and resurrection you set us free from the power of sin and death and raise us up
   to live with you.
Pour out your Holy Spirit, the power of your living Word, that those who are washed in
the waters of baptism may be given new life.
To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord, in the unity of the
   Holy Spirit, now and forever.
C: Amen
P: Leo James Hagge, I baptize you in the name of the + Father, and of the + Son, and of
   the + Holy Spirit. Amen
P: Let us pray. We give you thanks, O God, that through water and the Holy Spirit you
give your sons and daughters new birth, cleanse them from sin, and raise them to
   eternal life.
Sustain Leo with the gift of your Holy Spirit:
the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might,
the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord,
the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever. (Isaiah 11:2)
C: Amen
P: Leo, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of
   Christ forever.
C: Amen
A lighted candle is given.

                                                  10
P: Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your
   Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:16)
P: O God, the giver of all life, look with kindness upon Ashley and Matt. Make them teachers
and examples of righteousness for their children. Strengthen them in their own Baptism
so they may share eternally with them the salvation you have given them, through Jesus
   Christ our Lord.
C: Amen
Gifts are presented from the congregation
P: Through Baptism God has made this new brother a member of the priesthood we all
share in Christ Jesus, that we may proclaim the praise of God and bear God’s creative
and redeeming Word to all the world.

C: We welcome you into the Lord's family. We receive you as a fellow member
of the body of Christ, child of the same heavenly Father, and worker with us
   in the kingdom of God.

*THE THANKSGIVING
 The Lord be with you.
 And also with you.
 Lift up your hearts!
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.

*EUCHARISTIC PRAYER
Holy God, you alone are holy, you alone are God. The universe declares your praise:
beyond the stars, beneath the sea, and with each breath.
 We praise you, O God.
Generations bless your faithfulness; through the past, in the present, and into the future.
 We praise you, O God.
We give you thanks for your Son; at the heart of human life, near those who suffer, beside
the sinner, among the poor, and with us now.
 We praise you, O God.
In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it
and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body given for you. Do this
   in remembrance of me.”
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying, “This
cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness
of sin. Do this in remembrance of me.”
Remembering Christ’s love for us, we proclaim the mystery of faith:
Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.
We pray for the gift of your Spirit in our gathering, upon this bread and cup, among your
people, throughout the world. Blessing, praise and thanks to you, holy God, through
Jesus Christ and by your Holy Spirit, without end.
 Amen

* The Lord's Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come,
thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily
bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass
against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For
thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
