ADRIAN’S CORNER Five References to God in the Declaration of Independence Independence Day, the Fourth of July, commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Indepenence 244 years ago on July 4, 1776. The Continental Congress declared that the thirteen American colonies regarded themselves as a new nation, the United States of America, and were no longer part of the British Empire. It’s amusing when otherwise intelligent people are una- ble to find evidence of God in our governing documents. The Declaration of Independence, the signing of which we commemorate July 4th, alone has five references to God—two in the first paragraph, one in the middle, and two in the last. “When in the course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and of nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.” Who is responsible for “the laws of nature” but God—certainly not man nor nature itself? From the “laws of nature” sprang an awareness of natural law (sometimes called common sense), understood by early philosophers to be a source of higher law that never changes. This was best explained by Cicero, a Roman politician, as early as the 1st century B. C. —even predating the existence of Christianity when he wrote: “Nor may any other law override it, nor may it be repealed as a whole or in part… Nor is it one thing at Rome and another at Athens, one thing today and another tomorrow, but one eternal and unalterable law that binds all nations forever.” Of “Nature’s God,” the second reference to deity is, of course, more explicit and needs no explanation. The third reference to God is the word “Creator” found in the second paragraph. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” This boldly identified our base for at least three unalienable rights as God, and the Founders identified this truth as self-evident. Any person endowed with common sense or reason would/could come to this conclusion. So passionate were they with respect to these three “God-given rights” that such was identified as the purpose of govern- ment. “That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed…” Moreover, their right of revolution hinged upon the denial of these “God-given rights.” “That whenever any form of gov- ernment becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new gov- ernment, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes… But when a long train of abuses and usurpations… evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government and to provide new guards for their future security.” Once again, an appeal to natural law, which emanates from God, was noted and the loss of which always justifies revolution. The fourth and fifth references to God are found in the last paragraph. The rightness of our cause was left to God as judge. “We, therefore, the representatives of the United States of America, in general congress, assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the name, and by authority of the good people of these colonies, solemnly publish and declare, that these united colonies are, and of right ought to be free and inde- pendent states, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown…” The fifth and last reference to God asks for his divine protection in our revolutionary course of action. “And for the sup- port of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor.” There was no dissent noted with respect to these references to God and their placement or emphasis in this document by any of the participants then, nor should there be now. Muchas per- sonas viven por arriba de sus necesidades. Tenemos a nuestra disposición muchos recursos y aparatos que nos ahorran el tiempo, y aún así nuestras vidas son más com- plejas que antes. Aunque muchas personas no se dedican a trabajos manuales extremos, rara vez evitamos nuestros trabajos. Muchos están conectados a través de teléfonos y reciben constantemente llamadas, textos y correos elec- trónicos. Otros pasan horas en el tráÞco en sus viajes dia- rios o acumulan millas en sus programas de viajeros frecuentes. Pasamos horas mirando compulsivamente nues- tros programas favoritos. Muchos niños están acostum- brados a estar frente a una pantalla todo el tiempo y ya no saben cómo jugar creativamente. Las estadísticas de quienes van dejando la Iglesia y de otras religiones siguen aumentando. Si bien no hay tal cosa como “en los buenos viejos tiempos” a los que volver, había algo que decir para dormir descansadamente después de un buen día de tra- bajo, y para una reunión familiar alrededor de la mesa pa- ra compartir los alimentos. Para muchos, este modelo de eucarística casi nunca existe. Jesús sabía y sentía nues- tros dolores, y gritaba “vengan a mí, todos los que están fatigados y cansados y yo les daré descanso”. OUR COMPLICATED LIVES We live in an age and a society that has never been more educated or had a higher standard of living, yet never have we carried as much debt. Many are living beyond their means. We have so many resources and time-saving devices at our hands, yet our lives are more complex than ever. While many people may not engage in extreme manual labor we rarely escape our jobs. Many are connected through phones and constantly receive calls, texts, and emails. Others spend hours in trafÞc on their daily commutes or pack on the frequent flyer miles. We spend hours binge-watching our favorite shows. Many children are accustomed to being in front of a screen all the time and no longer know how to play creatively. The statistics for those who continue to leave the Church and all forms of organized religion also continue to rise. While there is no such thing as a “good old days” to return to, there was something to be said for sleeping soundly after putting in a good day’s work, and for a family gathering around the table for a shared meal. For many, this model for eucharist rarely exists. Jesus knows and feels our pains, and calls out, “Come to me, all you who labor and are bur- dened, and I will give you rest.” IT’S NOT ROCKET SCIENCE So how do we declutter? Downsize? Devote ourselves again to Christ and live out our gospel calling? Sign up for a liturgical ministry, or volunteer to help with a religion program. Join a small faith group. Volunteer at a food pantry or Habitat for Humanity. Become involved as an individual, or a family. Meanwhile, back at the house, make a commitment to go through one drawer a day, and take things to your local St. Vinnie’s or secondhand store. Remember meal and bedtime prayers. Find a minute to read the daily scriptures. Take many baby steps. It’s not rocket science. It is a continu- al commitment to bring ourselves as we are, and to respond to Jesus’ call to “Come.”
