WELCOME FR. SAUCEDO! - VOCATIONS WEEKEND – This weekend we welcome Fr. Peter Saucedo, the Archdiocesan Associate Director of Vocations, who will preaching at all Masses regarding how to promote vocations to the Priesthood. Fr. Peter is a wonderful young priest in residence at Holy Family Parish in Glendale and is an excellent speaker. Welcome Father! IT’S ALMOST CHRISTMAS! – Today is the Fourth Sunday of Advent and thus reminds us that Christmas is almost here. This week we joyfully celebrate the Feast of the Birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Christmas is always a Holy Day of Obligation, so we are all bound to attend Mass that day or the evening prior. Please be sure to check carefully the Christmas schedule in this bulletin. We have added additional Masses on the Vigil as well as on the day itself. Please note that, since Christmas falls on a Saturday this year, it does present the situation in which we have to attend Mass twice: once for Christmas and once for Holy Family Sunday. There is no "two for one" offer! Obviously, we should be grateful that we can come to Mass! Thankfully, this year we are back to a full schedule including the beautiful traditional Midnight Mass. SPECIAL CHRISTMAS MASS FOR CHILDREN – It is our tradition to have the Christmas Vigil Mass on December 24th at 4:00 p.m. as special Mass for the children of our parish. The children’s choirs will be singing, and we invite all the children of our parish to join their parents at this Mass. The homily will be directed to the children. There will be a “special visitor” at the end of Mass with candy! Everyone is welcome! THE BEST PREPARATION FOR CHRISTMAS – The best way we can prepare to rejoice in Our Lord’s Birth this coming Christmas is to do so with a clean soul. There will be ample opportunities to make a good Confession on the days leading up to Christmas this week. Please check the schedule in this bulletin. The Penance Service is this Tuesday, December 21st at 7:15 p.m. There will be many confessors. CHRISTMAS FLOWERS – We would be most grateful to all families who purchase a potted poinsettia plant for use in decorating the church for Christmas. Simply bring your plant to the church or the Piazza. Thank you!
FROM THE PASTOR'S DESK (CON'T) GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO SAVE ON TAXES! – Last year Congress passed the CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security) Act. It actually was continued for 2021 and presents a wonderful opportunity to our parishioners for their end of the year giving to the parish. Please note: - All taxpayers can take a charitable deduction of up to $300, even if you do not itemize your donations. - If you do itemize your deductions, cash contributions to qualified charities (like the parish) can be deducted up to 100% of your adjusted gross income. - IRA required minimum distributions are temporarily suspended. But, if you are 70 1/2 or older, you can still make a gift from your IRA or name the parish as a beneficiary. Be sure to contact your financial advisor to learn more and address your particular situation. This is a wonderful opportunity for our parishioners to make a more sizeable donation to the parish especially to our Capital Campaign. MERRY CHRISTMAS! – Finally, on behalf of Fr. As we joyfully prepare to celebrate the birth of Our Lord and Savior, let us also assist mothers who have said Yes to Life. Let Every Baby's Light Shine Christmas tree has star ornaments listing baby items needed to help Mothers who considered abortion, but have said Yes to Life. The baby items will be delivered by Vox Vitae to Los Angeles Pregnancy Services, a pregnancy resource center that has saved over 100 babies from abortion this year. This pregnancy center has nine abortion businesses within one mile of it. Let us help this pregnancy center as they are helping the mothers! ANDREW CHURCH Our choirs are preparing now for Christmas Masses, and you will not want to miss the beautiful services of Lessons & Carols that precede each of the Christmas Vigil Masses on December 24 and Midnight Mass! Lessons & Carols for the 4:00 p.m. Children’s Christmas Vigil Mass begins at 3:30 p.m. with musical reprises from our wonderful Pueri Cantores San Gabriel Valley concert and a carol sing-along. Our children’s choirs will be accompanied by organ, trumpet, and a string quartet. Lessons & Carols for the 6:00 pm Christmas Vigil Mass begins at 5:30 p.m. with beautiful Christmas music sung by Chorus Angelorum and accompanied by members of the Saint Andrew Sinfonia and organ. Hear carols from around the world followed by a solemn Mass for the Vigil of Christmas. Lessons & Carols for Midnight Mass begins at 11:15 p.m. with music from the great Appalachian tradition and carols sung by the Cappella Musica of Saint Andrew Church (who regularly sing at the 12:30 p.m. Sunday Mass) augmented by members of Chorus Angelorum and by members of the Saint Andrew Sinfonia. Following this extended service of Lessons & Carols is the solemn Midnight Mass, including many Christmas favorites. All of our choirs have been working very hard on the music that will be sung, and we hope that you will enjoy the beauty and solemnity of these most important liturgies. MUSIC IN THE LITURGY The days of Advent from December 17 onward are set aside by the Church as a special preparation for the celebration of the Incarnation. Even the weekdays during this period are privileged, and may not be replaced with other Masses. The music for this period is also different. And so, finally, we sing the quintessential Advent hymn starting this week, O Come, O Come, Emmanuel. While many parishes use this hymn throughout the whole of Advent, it is really only proper to this last part of Advent. However, we will not sing the verse, “O Come, O come, Emmanuel” until December 23 (we will also finally sing this verse at the services of Lessons & Carols preceding the Christmas Vigil Masses and Midnight Mass) since that is the day on which it is prescribed. In spite of the fact that O Come, O Come, Emmanuel is reserved for the last part of Advent, we have heard this melody from the beginning, but with a different hymn, When Angels Sound the Trumpet’s Call. (Recall, a “hymn” is a poem; it is the lyrics. A “hymn tune” is the melody to which the hymn is sung.) The hymn When Angels Sound the Trumpet’s Call has a refrain: “Maranatha! O Savior of the nations, come to us!” The term “maranatha”comes, via Latin and Greek, from the Aramaic term maranâ thâ, which means “come, Lord!” and is pronounced with the TH-sound as in the original Aramaic, the ordinary language in the Holy Land two thousand years ago. As we begin the proximal preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of the Lord, let us prepare our hearts and minds to receive him anew. A most blessed and Merry Christmas to all!

COROS EN LA IGLESIA DE SAN ANDRÉS Nuestros coros se están preparando ahora para las misas navideñas, ¡y no querrá perderse los hermosos servicios de lecciones y villancicos que preceden a cada una de las Misas de la Vigilia Navideña el 24 de diciembre y la Misa de Medianoche! Lecciones y Villancicos para las 4:00 p.m. La Misa de la Vigilia de Navidad para niños comienza a las 3:30 p.m. con repeticiones musicales de nuestro maravilloso concierto de Pueri Cantores del Valle de San Gabriel y un canto de Villancicos. Los coros de nuestros niños estarán acompañados de órgano, trompeta y cuarteto de cuerda. Lecciones y Villancicos para la Misa de la Vigilia de Navidad de las 6:00 p.m. Comienza a las 5:30 p.m. con hermosa música Navideña cantada por Chorus Angelorum y acompañada por miembros de la Sinfonía y órgano de San Andrés. Escuche villancicos de todo el mundo seguidos de una Misa solemne para la Vigilia de Navidad. Las lecciones y Villancicos para la Misa de medianoche comienzan a las 11:15 p.m. con música de la gran tradición de los Apalaches y Villancicos cantados por la Cappella Musica de la iglesia de San Andrés (que canta regularmente en la Misa dominical de las 12:30 p.m.) aumentada por miembros del Chorus Angelorum y por miembros de la Sinfonía de San Andrés. Después de este servicio extendido de Lessons & Carols está la solemne Misa de Medianoche, que incluye muchos favoritos navideños. Todos nuestros coros han estado trabajando muy duro en la música que se cantará, y esperamos que disfruten de la belleza y solemnidad de estas liturgias más importantes. Y así, finalmente, cantamos el himno de Adviento por excelencia a partir de esta semana, ¡Oh ven, oh ven, Emanuel! Si bien muchas parroquias usan este himno durante todo el Adviento, en realidad solo es apropiado para esta última parte del Adviento. A pesar de ello, hemos escuchado esta melodía desde el inicio del Adviento, pero con un himno diferente, Los ángeles trompetas sonarán. Este himno tiene un estribillo: "¡Maranatha, Maranatha, oh Salvador de las naciones, ven!" La palabra "maranatha" proviene, a través del latín y el griego, el término arameo maranâ thâ, que significa "¡ven, Señor!" Al comenzar la próxima preparación para la celebración de la Natividad del Señor, preparemos nuestros corazones y mentes para recibirlo de nuevo. ¡Feliz y bendita Navidad para todos!
