EASTER BUILDS ON ROCK INSTEAD OF SAND
An interesting reflection is to look back on the last month or two and note the times we’ve
reversed ourselves. Usually these reversals concern minor manners, things along the lines of the
importance of putting an item back in its place or a regularity in carrying out a certain task. If the
day is going well it’s easier to keep usual
patterns, but if the day is a challenge it’s
easier to let routines fall by the wayside. If
tiredness claims us, the usual rules that we
follow tend to be relaxed a bit. Our
emotional and physical states do influence
us and sometimes the influence is greater
than we think. Years ago a high school
math teacher openly came to terms with
this phenomenon. When asked if he
planned to offer extra credit, he sighed and
said if the day went well he probably
would.
Spiritual matters tend to exaggerate the influence of changed emotional and physical states.
When things are going well spiritually, people really do believe that they can continue doing well.
They are a little like St. Peter just before the enormity of the suffering of the Passion hit home:
“‘Even though all should have their faith shaken, mine will not be.’ Then Jesus said to him, ‘Amen,
I say to you, this very night before the cock crows twice you will deny me three times.’ But he
vehemently replied, ‘Even though I should have to die with you, I will not deny you (Mark 14:29-
31).” When spiritual things do not go well, people either ignore or underplay problems or
exaggerate them. Some people have spiritual blind spots and are annoyed when others make
reference to them. They are a bit like the religious officials who challenged Jesus’ decision to heal
on the Sabbath. Jesus, looking “around at them with anger and grieved at their hardness of heart
… said to the man, ‘Stretch out you hand.’ He
stretched it out and his hand was restored. The
Pharisees went out and immediately took counsel
with the Herodians against him to put him to
death (Mark 3:5-6).” Others are preoccupied as
they consider what they have done wrong or why
God has decided to be so distant. “You have
brought us victory over our enemies, shamed
those who hate us. In God we have boasted all
the day long; your name we will praise forever.
But now you have rejected and disgraced us; you
do not march out with our armies. You make us
retreat before the foe…. All this has come upon us, though we have not forgotten you, nor been
disloyal to your covenant…. Awake! Why do you sleep, O Lord (Psalm 44:8-11, 18, 24)?”
The Lord’s response to the effects of changing emotional and physical states on our
spiritual life is the response of Easter. After the Eleven Apostles turned their backs on two
eyewitness accounts of Jesus’ resurrection, certainly a spiritual blind spot, Jesus “appeared to them
and rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness
of heart because they had not believed those who
saw him after he had been raised (Mark 16:14).”
Being verbally rebuked after abandoning Jesus in
the Garden of Gethsemane is actually a mild
response for the Eleven. Jesus then said to his
followers, “‘Go into the whole world and
proclaim the gospel to every creature (Mark
16:15).” In other words, go and spread the
message I gave my life to bring into the world.
Jesus still trusted his followers, as ragged as they
were during the Passion and during the first few
hours or days of the Resurrection. Similarly,
Christ was gentle with Mary Magdalene caught up in her grief because her Lord was gone: “She
said to them, ‘They have taken my Lord, and I don’t know where they laid him.’ When she had
said this, she turned around and saw Jesus there, but she did not know it was Jesus. Jesus said to
her, ‘Woman, why are you weeping. Whom are you looking for?’ She thought it was the gardener
and said to him, ‘Sir, if you carried him away, tell me where you laid him, and I will take him.’
Jesus said to her, ‘Mary!’ She turned and said to him in Hebrew, ‘Rabbouni,’ which means
Teacher (John 20:13-16).”
“Where we might have expected glory and trumpets the first Sunday after Easter, instead
the Gospel tells the story of honest, human groping toward truth. A sunny reunion between Jesus
and his friends, who dazzle with their resilient faith? Not quite. But maybe something better:
Jesus’ mercy, meeting them where they (and we) are, extending his hand toward Thomas in
genuine understanding and compassion. Only by coming dangerously close to this wounded Lord
will we, too, know transformation of our wounds — and resurrection (www.franciscanmedia.org/

Every third year, on the Ninth Sunday of Ordinary time, we hear the parable of the house
built on rock and the house built on sand. At the time the parable is proclaimed, it very clear that
it is wiser to build a house on rock than on sand. Sometimes the parable even seems to state the
obvious. But when the trials and tribulations of working with rock are in front of us, the parable
fades from our minds. The Lord does not turn away. The Lord is working on a foundation for us,
one set in stone. We may join him any time.
ANOTHER COMMUNICATION TOOL
In addition to emails, newsletters, bulletins, parish websites, phone calls,
visits to the office, and Sunday announcements, there is a program called
Flocknote that works on cell phones and home computers. It run by a
company dedicated to helping members of church congregations connect to
each other and their churches. Each congregation has its own area in which
to share information. There is no charge to be included in Flocknote, people
may unsubscribe at any time, your information will not be sold to third parties
or advertisers, and the program is encrypted so as to deter hackers. There’s even a way to join
particular groups or ministries in the parish (Theology on Tap, Bible Study, the Carmelite Group,
etc.) so as to receive information that is more relevant.
The more people who use Flocknote, the easier it is for the parish to communicate because
more of us will be gathered in the same place and receive the same messages. Signing up for
Flocknote is easy.
On a smart phone text SGCCUT to 84576. Flocknote will text you back a confirmation
message AND another message with a link. Click that link and complete the process,

COVID-19 VACCINE AVAILABLE
In addition to the vaccination times available at www.swuhealth.org/covid-vaccine/, the Mexican
Consulate is working with the Southwest Public Health Department to provide another vaccination
time on April 30 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. For more information, please email

CINCO DE MAYO
Currently the local requirements for gatherings like our usual Cinco
de Mayo celebration are limited to 50 people at a time. There are
also other precautions to observe. Working with the parish council,
it has been determined that our best bet is a series of food sales after
weekend Masses. It would be a lot of work to follow current
guidelines for a regular Cinco celebration, and this work would
produce very little benefit. Even if these guidelines were to change
soon, there would be no time to organize something for May.
Our plan is to work with those involved in food sales after weekend
Masses to come up with a specific plan and schedule. More details
to follow when they are confirmed.
GRATITUDE AND THANKS
The Spanish community has organized a variety of small retreats to help keep the faith alive in
Covid-19 times. The community in Beryl Junction hasn’t had much since Covid-19 descended
upon us and so the Misioneros de Jesus y Maria, in our parish, are working to provide a retreat in
Beryl. It’s a lot of work and a lot of coordination. Part of the effort included the sale of tacos and
tamales after last Sunday’s Masses. Thanks to those
who cooked, cleaned the kitchen, and those who
bought the food. In ways great and small spreading
the Word remains part of who we are.
For the past two Sunday evenings our new
youth group has met at 5:00 p.m. in Kuzy Hall. Last
year this group was ready to start until Covid-19
dramatically altered their plans. Thanks to all our
coordinators, including Edna Escobosa, Heather
Philmon, and Michelle Gonzales, for keeping the
effort alive. Thanks also to those in the middle
school grades who are participating and their parents who are helping launch a new ministry.
Theology on Tap is also in the process of revival. This group meets to explore teachings
of the Church on various topics. A meeting is tentatively scheduled for Saturday at 10:00 a.m. in
Kuzy Hall. Thanks to Tim Kockler for organizing and reviving the group!
THE GIFT OF FAMILY
Five years ago Pope Francis released an apostolic exhortation entitled Amoris Laetitia which
focused upon the family. The Vatican’s Dicastery for the Laity, Family and Life, plans on a series
of ten videos in which the Holy Father, together with families from five continents, will talk about
the content and spirit of the apostolic exhortation. The first video has already been released and
the remaining nine will be released during the rest of the year. The website www.amorislaetitia.va
offers accesses to the first video and those that will follow. This same web page also offers a short
guide to accompany these videos.
Shaping the future takes time, patience, and the efforts of a large number of people moving
in the same direction. Families offer an ideal setting for these kinds of efforts. Cardinal Kevin
Farrell who leads the Dicastery for the Laity, Family, and Life believes that these videos may help
families become increasingly aware of their vocation and their active role in building the Church
of tomorrow." Evangelization takes many forms and family life is one of the more important of
these forms.
THE PARISH BUDGETING PROCESS BEGINS AGAIN
Our parish’s fiscal year runs from July 1 to June 30. In order to form a budget for the 2021-2022
fiscal year, it is important that groups and ministries seeking funds from the parish submit a budget
request to Don Drake by May 21. Budget requests include a list of expenditures that will come up
in the next fiscal year and an estimate of their cost. These requests, along with estimates of parish
income, are important in forming a new budget. Don Drake coordinates these requests and
estimates and the parish finance committee recommends a budget for the next fiscal year to the
pastor.
Once the budget is approved, it is important to follow it. That’s why expense vouchers
need to be filled out before an expense is incurred and before reimbursement is expected.
Otherwise the parish loses control of its expenses and that is not good stewardship on the part of
the parish.
NO CHANGE IN DIOCESAN COVID-19 PRECAUTIONS
POLICIES
Even though April 10 was the end of Utah’s
mask mandate, masks are still are still required
for schools and gatherings over 50 people.
Private business may also continue to require
masks. The Bishop’s office last sent out an
update on Covid-19 precautions on the 25th of
March. It says to “continue to practice health
hygiene in churches and parish facilities: use
masks, frequent hand sanitizing and physical
distancing. Pews and other frequently touched
surfaces shall be cleaned or sanitized/disinfected after each Mass or service.”
Until we have an update, Covid-19 precautions are set to continue as they have for the past
several months.
GENERAL SCHEDULING REMINDERS
Confessions in the Scanlan Building on Saturdays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Appointments
for confessions are also encouraged and they can be made by calling the office.
Our liturgical streaming schedule continues with daily Masses Monday through Friday
streamed live on Facebook at 8:00 a.m. (English) and 7:00 p.m. (Spanish). After live
streaming these Masses remain on Facebook as do the Sunday Masses which are streamed
live at 11:00 a.m. (English) and 1:00 p.m. (Spanish). These Sunday Masses are also on
YouTube at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. To view Masses on Facebook, type David Bitmen

Weekend Masses have resumed, albeit with less people. Saturday Masses are at 5:00 p.m.

LA PASCUA CONSTRUYE SOBRE LA ROCA EN VEZ DE LA
ARENA
Una reflexión interesante es mirar hacia atrás el último mes o dos y ver las veces que nos hemos revertido.
Por lo general, estos cambios se refieren a modales menores, cosas del tipo de la importancia de volver a
colocar un elemento en su lugar o la regularidad en la realización de una determinada tarea. Si el día va
bien, es más fácil mantener los patrones
habituales, pero si el día es un desafío, es más
fácil dejar las rutinas, por un lado. Si el
cansancio nos reclama, las reglas habituales
que seguimos suelen ser un poco relajadas.
Nuestros estados emocionales y físicos nos
influyen y, a veces, la influencia es mayor de
lo que pensamos. Hace años, un profesor de
matemáticas de secundaria aceptó
abiertamente este fenómeno. Cuando se le
preguntó si planeaba ofrecer crédito adicional,
suspiró y dijo que, si el día iba bien,
probablemente lo haría.
Los asuntos espirituales tienden a
exagerar la influencia de los estados emocionales y físicos modificados. Cuando las cosas van bien
espiritualmente, la gente realmente cree que pueden continuar haciendo bien. Son un poco como San Pedro
justo antes de que la enormidad del sufrimiento de la Pasión llegará a casa: “'Aunque la fe de todos sea
sacudida, la mía no lo será.' Entonces Jesús le dijo: 'Amén, te digo a ti, esta misma noche, antes de que el
gallo cante dos veces, me negarás tres veces '. Pero él respondió con vehemencia:' Aunque tenga que morir
contigo, no te negaré (Marcos 14: 29-31). Cuando las cosas espirituales no van bien, la gente ignora o
minimiza los problemas o los exagera. Algunas personas tienen puntos ciegos espirituales y se molestan
cuando otros hacen referencia a ellos. Son un poco como los funcionarios religiosos que desafiaron la

alianza…. ¡Despierta! ¿Por qué duermes, oh, Señor
(Salmo 44: 8-11, 18, 24)? "
La respuesta del Señor a los efectos del cambio de estados emocionales y físicos en nuestra vida
espiritual es la respuesta de la Pascua. Después de que los Once Apóstoles les dieron la espalda a dos relatos
de testigos de la resurrección de Jesús, ciertamente un punto ciego espiritual, Jesús “se les apareció y los
reprendió por su incredulidad y dureza de corazón porque no habían creído a los que lo vieron después de
haber sido resucitado (Marcos 16:14) ". Ser reprendido verbalmente después de abandonar a Jesús en el
Huerto de Getsemaní es en realidad una respuesta
suave para los Once. Entonces Jesús dijo a sus
seguidores: “Vayan por todo el mundo y proclamen
el evangelio a toda criatura (Marcos 16:15)”. En otras
palabras, ve y difunde el mensaje que di mi vida para
llevar al mundo. Jesús todavía confiaba en sus
seguidores, tan harapientos como lo estaban durante
la Pasión y durante las primeras horas o días de la
Resurrección. De manera similar, Cristo fue gentil
con María Magdalena atrapada en su dolor porque su
Señor se había ido: “Ella les dijo: 'Se han llevado a mi
Señor, y no sé dónde lo han puesto'. Cuando dijo esto,
se dio la vuelta y vio a Jesús allí, pero no sabía que
era Jesús. Jesús le dijo: Mujer, ¿por qué lloras? ¿A
quién buscas?” Ella pensó que era el jardinero y le dijo: “Señor, si usted se lo llevó, dígame dónde lo puso
y lo llevaré.” Jesús le dijo: “¡María!”. Ella se volvió y le dijo en hebreo, 'Rabbouni', que significa Maestro
(Juan 20: 13-16)”.
“Donde podríamos haber esperado gloria y trompetas el primer domingo después de Pascua, en
cambio, el Evangelio cuenta la historia del anhelo humano honesto hacia la verdad. ¿Un reencuentro
soleado entre Jesús y sus amigos, que deslumbran con su fe resistente? No exactamente. Pero tal vez algo

Cada tres años, en el noveno domingo del tiempo ordinario, escuchamos la parábola de la casa
construida sobre roca y la casa construida sobre arena. En el momento en que se proclama la parábola,
queda muy claro que es más prudente construir una casa sobre roca que sobre arena. A veces, la parábola
incluso parece afirmar lo obvio. Pero cuando las pruebas y tribulaciones de trabajar con rocas están frente
a nosotros, la parábola se desvanece de nuestras mentes. El Señor no se aparta. El Señor está trabajando
sobre un fundamento para nosotros, uno escrito en piedra. Podemos unirnos a él en cualquier momento.
OTRA HERRAMIENTA DE COMUNICACIÓN
Además de los correos electrónicos, boletines informativos, boletines, sitios web de la parroquia, llamadas
telefónicas, visitas a la oficina y anuncios dominicales, existe un programa llamado Flocknote que funciona

VACUNA COVID-19 DISPONIBLE

CINCO DE MAYO
Actualmente, los requisitos locales para reuniones como nuestra

GRATITUD Y GRACIAS
La comunidad hispana ha organizado una variedad de pequeños retiros para ayudar a mantener viva la fe
en tiempos de Covid-19. La comunidad en Beryl Junction no ha tenido mucho desde que Covid-19
descendió sobre nosotros y por eso los Misioneros de Jesús y María, en nuestra parroquia, están trabajando
para proporcionar un retiro en Beryl. Es bastante trabajo y mucha coordinación. Parte del esfuerzo incluyó
la venta de tacos y tamales después de las Misas del domingo pasado. Gracias a los que cocinaron, limpiaronla cocina y a los que compraron la comida. De maneras
grandes y pequeñas, la difusión de la Palabra sigue
siendo parte de lo que somos.
Durante los dos últimos domingos por la noche,
nuestro nuevo grupo de jóvenes se ha reunido a las 5:00
p.m. en Kuzy Hall. El año pasado, este grupo estaba listo
para comenzar hasta que Covid-19 alteró drásticamente
sus planes. Gracias a todas nuestras coordinadoras,
incluye Edna Escobosa, Heather Philmon y Michelle
Gonzales, por mantener vivo el esfuerzo. Gracias
también a aquellos en los grados de secundaria que están
participando y a sus padres que están ayudando a lanzar
un nuevo ministerio.
Theology on Tap también está en proceso de renacimiento. Este grupo se reúne para explorar las
enseñanzas de la Iglesia sobre varios temas. Una reunión está programada tentativamente para el sábado a

EL REGALO DE LA FAMILIA
Hace cinco años, el Papa Francisco lanzó una exhortación apostólica titulada Amoris Laetitia que
se centra en la familia. El Dicasterio para los Laicos, la Familia y la Vida del Vaticano planea una
serie de diez vídeos en los que el Santo Padre, junto a familias de los cinco continentes, hablará
sobre el contenido y el espíritu de la exhortación apostólica. El primer video ya fue lanzado y los
nueve restantes se lanzarán durante el resto del año. El sitio web www.amorislaetitia.va ofrece
accesos al primer vídeo y a los que seguirán. Esta misma página web también ofrece una breve
guía para acompañar estos videos.
Dar forma al futuro requiere tiempo, paciencia y el esfuerzo de un gran número de personas
que se mueven en la misma dirección. Las familias ofrecen un entorno ideal para este tipo de
esfuerzos. El cardenal Kevin Farrell, que dirige el Dicasterio para los laicos, la familia y la vida,
cree que estos videos pueden ayudar a las familias a ser cada vez más conscientes de su vocación
y su papel activo en la construcción de la Iglesia del mañana. "La evangelización toma muchas
formas y la vida familiar es una de las más importantes de estas formas.
EL PROCESO DE PRESUPUESTO PARROQUIAL COMIENZA
DE NUEVO
El año fiscal de nuestra parroquia va del 1 de julio al 30 de junio. Para formar un presupuesto para
el año fiscal 2021-2022, es importante que los grupos y ministerios que buscan fondos de la
parroquia presenten una solicitud de presupuesto a Don Drake antes del 21 de mayo. Presupuesto
de las solicitudes incluyen una lista de gastos que surgirán en el próximo año fiscal y una
estimación de su costo. Estas solicitudes, junto con las estimaciones de los ingresos de la parroquia,
son importantes para formar un nuevo presupuesto. Don Drake coordina estas solicitudes y
estimaciones, y el comité de finanzas de la parroquia recomienda al párroco un presupuesto para
el próximo año fiscal.Una vez que se aprueba el presupuesto, es importante seguirlo. Es por eso que los
comprobantes de gastos deben completarse antes de incurrir en un gasto y antes de que se espere
el reembolso. De lo contrario, la parroquia pierde el control de sus gastos y eso no es una buena
corresponsabilidad por parte de la parroquia.
SIN CAMBIOS EN LAS POLÍTICAS COVID-19
A pesar de que el 10 de abril fue el fin del mandato de máscaras de Utah, todavía se requieren
cubre bocas para las escuelas y reuniones de más
de 50 personas. Las empresas privadas también
pueden seguir necesitando máscaras. La oficina
del Obispo envió por última vez una
actualización de Covid-19 precauciones el 25 de
marzo. El obispo dice: “Seguir practicar la

transmitidas en vivo en Facebook a las 8:00 a.m. (inglés) y a las 7:00 p.m. (español). Después de
la transmisión en vivo, estas Misas permanecen en Facebook, al igual que las Misas dominicales
que se transmiten en vivo a las 11:00 a.m. (inglés) y a la 1:00 p.m. (español). Estas misas
