Our annual talent show is tonight 7-9 PM at GMS. Admission is $5

Science Olympiad
Best of luck to our Science Olympiad Team members who will be participating in
the state competition this weekend at University of Illinois Urbana/Champaign.

After School Pickup
A reminder that parents who are picking up their children after school need to be
using the main parking lot on the west side of the school. You should not be
using the circle drive, the maintenance loading area, or neighboring streets for
student pickup. Thank you for your cooperation.

PARENT INFO NIGHT FOR INCOMING 7TH GR. BAND PARENTS
Attention all current 6th grade band families: please join us at Grayslake Middle School
on Wednesday, April 17th for a brief informational meeting about the GMS band
program and what to expect as we end this year and start next year. The meeting will
take place at 7:00pm in the Grayslake MS library and last about 30 minutes. Mr.
Thomas will quickly go over all the different bands that students can be placed in, how
auditions work, performance schedules for next year, summer band, and anything else
that you might have questions about. To make things even more exciting, there might
be a performance by the Grayslake Middle School Jazz Ensemble to begin and conclude
the evening! Hope to see all of you there on the 17th!

Attention Frederick Families,
On Tuesday, May 7th​ ​ the Student Council will be going to the Grayslake
Senior Center to play BINGO with the seniors. ​ ​We are looking for
donations to be the prizes for the BINGO game. ​The seniors and
the kids have a great time doing this and it helps the seniors with
practical supplies that they can’t always get easily! Here are some
examples:

Toilet paper, Paper Towels, Kleenex, Laundry detergent, toothpaste,
Chocolates, crossword puzzles, throw blankets, dish towels, lotions
etc.
We will need all donations by May 2nd.

STUDENT COUNCIL FUNDRAISER!

HELP THE ANIMAL SHELTERS IN OUR AREA
AND ​WIN YOUR CLASS A PIZZA PARTY OR ICE
CREAM SUNDAE PARTY​!!!

The Frederick School Student Council is holding a fundraiser for some area
Animal Shelters (Save-A-Pet and Orphans of the Storm). Any money
collected will be split between the two shelters.

We will have a donation box for each homeroom in the lunchroom from
Monday, April 8 until Wednesday, April 24. All homerooms who collect
$500 or more will earn their choice of either a pizza party or an ice cream
sundae party paid for by the Student Council!

Help these amazing animals and earn a party for your class at the same
time!

         Family Camp Out!
Attention All Frederick Falcons! We are pleased to
announce we are having our 7th annual Fredrick Family
Camp Out! Get ready for some outdoor family fun!

Who’s Invited?
   •    All Frederick Students and Their Families
When Is It?
  • Friday, May 17th
  • Camp Out starts at 4:00 PM and goes through Saturday morning.
  • Please come to the event with plenty of time to set up your tent.
  • Camping out is optional. If you are not able to camp out overnight, please feel free to come by for the
        day’s activities.
Where Is It?
   •    Frederick School Greens
Activities:
   •    Open gym & climbing wall
   •    P.E. equipment available for play
   •    Family activity (usually a scavenger hunt or trivia challenge)
   •    Camp fire
   •    Outside movie with popcorn (See RSVP section for more details)
   •    Dinner – Hot dogs and chips will be provided
   •    Breakfast – Pancakes and eggs will be provided
Cost:
   •    $4 per person (campers and non-campers); please pay when you RSVP (cash or checks made out to
        Frederick School).

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
   • This is not a drop-off event for students.
   • A parent or guardian must accompany their child for the entire event.
   • Tents and camping materials are not provided. Please bring your own tent/sleeping
     bags/folding chairs/flashlights/water/snacks etc.
   • The school will be open at all times for bathroom use.
   • Feel free to park in the back lot after all the busses have left.

Summer Academy 2019
                                   Grayslake School District 46

Grades – Pre-K through current 8th grade.

Dates - Classes will be held Monday, June 10th – Wednesday, July 3rd with no school on
Fridays.

Times - 1st period 8:15-9:25, 2nd period 9:30-10:40, 3rd period 10:45-11:55

Supervision – Students may not enter Frederick until 8:10 am, as there is no supervision offered
in the morning. If a student takes a 1st period class and a 3rd period class, there is no supervision
for 2nd period. Students need to be picked up on time after their class is dismissed.

Eligibility - The program is open to all District 46 students who could benefit from remedial
courses or who wish to participate in enrichment courses.

Transportation - Transportation is the responsibility of the parent(s). Bus service is not
available for the Summer Academy.

Attendance Policy - Consistent attendance is recommended throughout the summer academy
program. Teachers will plan activities and prepare materials based on enrollment. Attendance
will be taken just as during the regular school year.

Course Cancellation - District 46 reserves the right to cancel any course that does not meet
minimum enrollment requirements.

Confirmation - Students and parents will receive course confirmation the first week of June.

Registration - Early registration is encouraged. Classes will be filled in the order in which the
registrations are received. Registrations can be mailed or delivered through your child’s campus
to Prairieview School, 103 E. Belvidere Rd., Hainesville, IL 60030 c/o Stephanie Timm. No
phone registrations will be accepted.

A student’s current grade level is used to register for Summer Academy. Please notice the
grade levels listed next to each course and sign up for the appropriate class for your child.

Tuition - There is a tuition fee of $95.00 for each class. $90 per class if received by April 26th.

Refunds- There will be no refunds given after June 13, 2019.

Second Helping Classes
Second Helping Reading and Math: Students will receive extra support in the areas of reading
and math. These classes are beneficial to students that need to maintain skills taught during the
regular school year.

                                 Enrichment Classes
Enrichment Classes: Students can choose from a variety of subject areas to enhance their love
of learning. Subjects include art, technology, physical activity, games and more!

                                1st Period - 8:15-9:25
Grade Pre-K: Kindergarten Readiness                                                        Wilson
Kindergarten readiness class is designed for children who will be entering Kindergarten in the
fall. We will be using many fun activities to strengthen and develop basic skills such as number
sense, letter and sound recognition, and fine motor control. Come join the fun and prepare for the
best days of your life.

Grades K-2: Coding with Lots of Bots                                                      Innes
This class will begin with students coding and programming using various online resources.
Using the knowledge gained through these online resources and apps, students will use their
coding skills to program Code and Go Mice, BeeBots, Lego Robots, Dash and Dot, Spheros and
OzoBot Robots and more! Programmers will start with the programming basics learned during
week one to start programming different bots. Each week we will focus on a different aspect of
coding and programming.
**This class is possible because of equipment purchased with a Foundation46 Impact Grant.**

Grades K-2: P.E. for Me                                                                   Cashman
Come join us to play some of your favorite P.E. games and activities! This class will provide the
students with the benefits of being physically active! In addition, students will have the
opportunities to work on teamwork, good sportsmanship and socialization in a safe, fun and
comfortable environment.

Grades 1-2: Second Helping Reading                                                  Tabassum
Students will continue to develop and improve their basic reading, comprehension, and writing
skills.

Grades 1-3: Minecraft                                                                    Reisman
Come join us for some Minecraft fun! We will have different opportunities for you to build and
craft. We will be working together on building parts of our school – using ideas that YOU have!
In addition to building, there will be some competitive challenges that you will never see
coming!

Grades 2-4: Around the World in 15 Days                                               Cunningham
Students will travel to a new destination each day. Students will complete an activity at each
destination that they travel to. Our journey will also include learning map skills, making a
passport, reading books, writing poems, making brochures and learning about famous places
around the world.

Grades 3-4: STEM and The Great Lego Challenge                                              Peterson
Welcome to the world of legos! Design and build some of the great monuments of the world!
Build a catapult out of legos and test it out! Create a series of arcade games using legos and other
materials and win real prizes! The possibilities this summer are endless!

Students will continue to develop and improve their basic reading, comprehension, and writing
skills.

Grades 3-5: Wizarding World of Harry Potter 1                                        Greissinger
Do you love all things Harry Potter? Then this class is for you! Besides reading from some of
your favorite books and learning about the Wizard world, we will sort ourselves into houses,
create our own wands, try potions, study herbology and find out what our patronus looks like!
Test your Harry Potter knowledge in a game of trivia! Our themes will come from the first two
books, Sorcerers Stone and Chamber of Secrets.

Grades 3-6: Circus Skills                                                                    Richard
Join the circus this summer! Learn to walk tall on stilts, roll along on a unicycle, juggle a three
ball cascade, invert on a gym wheel and so much more! We will train circus skills in a safe
progression, with instruction, spotting and at your speed. Circus literature, circus arts history and
fine art pieces about circus will be woven into our learning together. This class will increase
body awareness, attention, teamwork, improv/flexible thinking and performance skills. Join the
fun!

Grades 5-7: I Wanna Be Rich!                                                        Lechman
Learn how making responsible money choices through savings and investing can make you
money. Through a combination of computer games and hands-on simulations, students will learn
how to make great money choices that just might make them rich in the future! Chromebooks are
needed for this class.

Grades 5-8: Sculpture World                                                                     Crane
Students will discover a variety of cool ways to create three-dimensional sculptures. Many
different types of art materials – such as wood, plaster, wire, cardboard, tile, plastic and led lights
may be used to achieve different 3D artwork!

2nd Period - 9:30-10:40
Grade Pre-K: Story Time Fun!                                                        Cunningham
Come along this summer for a story time adventure! Each day as we read a story, the students
will do activities based around the books. We will practice rhyming, letter recognition, counting
and so much more!

Grade K: First Grade Readiness                                                             Wilson
This class is designed for incoming first graders. The students will practice beginning reading
strategies, writing, and math skills that are necessary for first grade. Come make new friends and
get ready for 1st grade!

Students will continue to develop and improve their basic math skills through the use of
manipulatives, games, and activities.

Students will explore creative ways to draw different faces and places while using a variety of
different methods and drawing materials.

Grades 4-6: Wizarding World of Harry Potter 2                                        Greissinger
Can’t get enough of the wizard world? Or you took “1” last summer? We will continue on with
all new projects, trivia, and themes. Watch parts of the Prisoner of Azkaban and Goblet of Fire.
Students will be sorted into houses, paint some Harry Potter art, make dragon eggs time turners
and more!

Grades 4-6: Sports – It’s all about Math and Science                                     Lechman
Through a combination of computer simulations and hands-on games, discover how math and
science are connected to sports. Explore how an understanding of geometry and physics can
make everyone a better athlete. Whether you play hockey, softball, or basketball, all athletic
performances are improved when we understand the math and science behind them.
Chromebooks are needed for this class.

Grades 4-8: Digital Storytelling – Short Film                                              Reisman
Do you like watching YouTube videos? Have you ever thought to yourself “I can do that”? Well,
now is your chance to prove it. In this club, you will learn how to write, film, and edit your own
short film to be produced on YouTube. We will look at famous films and media for examples
and ideas.

Grades 7-8: Second Helping Reading                                                    Tarasiuk
Students will continue to develop and improve their basic reading, comprehension, and writing
skills.

                              3rd Period - 10:45-11:55
Grade K: Who is Ready for 1st Grade Math?                                            Cunningham
Students will play games and have fun practicing the math skills taught in kindergarten to help
prepare them for success in first grade. Counting, counting on, number sense and recognition,
use of tens frames, addition & subtraction skills and more will be used to solidify math skills.

Grades K-2: Young Scientists                                                           Tabassum
Enroll your kiddos to be young scientists and let them have the chance to do interesting
experiments and have some fun at the same time! We will work with the scientific method as
well – observations, questioning, hypotheses and experiments!

Grades 1-2: Second Helping Math                                                          Wilson
Students will continue to develop and improve their basic math skills through the use of
manipulatives, games, and activities.

Grades 1-2: All A’board                                                                 Cashman
Students can choose from a variety of board games to work on critical thinking and strategy
skills. Bring your favorite game to share with the class. Come relax and give your brains a boost
this summer!

Grades 3-5: Volleyball                                                                  Peterson
Come and learn the fundamentals of volleyball. We will spend half our time practicing skills and
running drills. The other half of our time will be scrimmaging to learn real game play.

Grades 3-6: Fantastic Beasts                                                        Greissinger
Follow the adventures of Newt Scamander in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. We will
study many of the animals Newt loves and cares for, create our own beasts, learn about the
American magical school, compare and contrast the wizard worlds of the USA and the United
Kingdom AND continue to enjoy all the magical themes from the Harry Potter book series.

Grades 4-8: Everything Clay                                                                 Crane
Students will create ceramic art pieces that can be used in a variety of different ways!
Examples: piggy banks, phone holder, jewelry box, appetizer dishes, candle holders, etc.
This class will have an additional fee of $10 to help cover material costs and supplies. Please
include it in the payment.

In this world, we need more kindness! Come learn how you can make a difference in your
community through kindness. Through a combination of videos, hands-on activities and
simulations, you will learn how to promote kindness and make this world a better place.

Grades 5-8: Wheel Gymnastics                                                              Richard
Wheel Gymnastics can be trained as a competitive sport or circus performance discipline. In this
class, both will be developed. This class will increase body awareness, coordination, strength,
flexibility and performance skills. Students should dress to exercise and must wear appropriate
shoes. Come join the fun!

Participating students will take part in a variety of fun athletic activities that will build not only
your child’s athletic skills, but also his/her sportsmanship skills as well. Children in activity
camp that are enrolled in morning classes should bring a sack lunch. THIS CLASS HAS A
COST OF $220. If registration is sent in prior to Friday, April 26, this class will cost $210.

5-8 Activity Camp
