                                           0. Introduction

The natureplus-award guidelines (GL) are hierarchically organised. Every product that is tested
according to the product-GL must also fulfil the Basic Criteria requirements (GL0000) as well as
those of the applicable product group-GL (See also § 2). In order to avoid double entries, these
requirements are, as a rule, not included in the product-GL a second time.

                                        1. Application Areas

The following criteria contain the requirements for the awardance of the natureplus eco-label for the
product group “Wallpaper Pastes/Adhesives from Renewable Raw Materials”. This award guideline
is to be applied exclusively to the named product group. Dispersion adhesives and paper and wood
glues from renewable raw materials and mineral-based adhesives are outside the scope of this
guideline.

                                        2 Award Criteria

A pre-requirement for the awardance of the natureplus eco-label is the fulfilment of the Basic
Criteria GL 0000 and the Product Group-Award Guideline GL 0900 “Adhesives from Renewable
Raw Materials“.

2.1 Functional Suitability
The classification of the adhesives must comply with DIN EN 923 („Adhesives – Terms and
Definitions“) Appendix A and/or DIN 16920 (“Adhesive Processing/Application”) and be suitable for
the adhesion of (paper) wall coverings on all interior surfaces suited to this application.

2.2 Composition, Forbidden Substances, Substance Restrictions
The product must be made to 99 M-% from mineral and renewable raw materials and water.
Synthetically modified natural materials (cellulose and starch derivatives) may be employed.
The proportion of organic solvents must not exceed 0.5 M-%.
Preservatives may only be employed in ready-to-use liquid products, which are already available in
retail or wholesale outlets, for the purpose of preserving the can or container.
The product must not be classified in WGK 2 or WGK 3 (Water Hazard Classes 2 and 3) according
to VwVwS (Administrative Regulation on the Classification of Substances Hazardous to Waters into
Water Hazard Classes) of the German Environmental Agency (Umwelt Bundes Amt).

                          RENEWABLE RAW MATERIALS

Date: September 2010 Page 3 of 7

The product will be subject to an analysis for heavy metals, AOX/EOX (absorbable and extractable
organic halides) and biocides and organic tin compounds, if suspected, as well as an emissions test
and must meet the threshold limits as laid down in section 3 (Laboratory Tests). These tests serve
to check for prohibited halogen organic compounds (e.g. Isothiazolinone containing halogen).

2.3 Declaration
In addition to the requirements of guideline GL0900, the following information is to be provided with
the product in a form which is suitable for the consumer and/or user:

      - Density
      - pH-value
      - The dynamic viscosity
      - Bulk weight
      - Solubility
      - Suitable surfaces for application, general requirements for the surface characteristics
      - Preparation of the surface and the treatments or priming required
      - Information on dealing with old wallpaper or paint layers.
      - Average covering power / efficiency in m2
      - Drying time under normal climatic conditions (20°C, 60% relative humidity)
      - Cleaning instructions (tools, appliances, clothing)

2.4 Raw Material Sourcing, Production of Preliminary Products, Production
A certificate of origin must be provided for all renewable raw materials.

The product will be tested for fungicides (Isothiazolinone) and halogen organic compounds as well
as heavy metals in accordance with section 3 (Laboratory Tests) and must comply with the
threshold limits contained therein.
If methyl-cellulose is used as an additive, the following requirement must be complied with:
- The production of the methyl-cellulose must not negatively impact upon the environment through
waste water. Proof of compliance in accordance with the national implementation of the EU-
guideline EU-Directives 76/464/EEC and 9661/EC (IPPC) must be provided in the form of an
   independent expert assessment report.

    2.5 Processing/Application
When using primers or fillers, it must be possible to use a natureplus certified product or a very low
emission product in accordance with EMICODE EC1 or a comparable standard (e.g. “Blauer Engel“
– the Blue Angel environmental quality label). The manufacturer must include a reference to at least
one of these products within the product documentation.

    2.6 Usage
In a solid state, the product must not exhibit any unpleasant or foreign smells or odours. The
products will be subject to an odour/smell test and an emissions test for volatile organic compounds
(VOC) and formaldehyde in accordance with section 3 and must fulfil the specified emissions
thresholds contained therein.
The tests in section 3 are performed according to the manufacturers information relating to the
quantities required per coat or application. The tests are performed on a suitable test surface.
