Choose a career
Few other professions offer you as much choice or opportunity for personal and professional
growth as nursing. It is widely recognised as one of the most progressive career paths in the UK.
Many of our nurses spend their entire careers within the NHS because there are so many exciting
opportunities to be involved in shaping healthcare.
We actively support our nurses and healthcare workers to develop their skills and consider careers in the
four facets of nursing excellence which are:
• Clinical practice: providing the best possible care to patients, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
• Clinical education: training our clinical teams to have the right skills to deliver exceptional care.
• Leadership: working across professions to lead teams in delivering care, implementing innovative new
ways of working and being an ambassador for the nursing profession.
• Research: pushing the boundaries of science and healthcare to find new and better ways of caring for
  and treating our patients.
Here in Leeds, everything we do is underpinned by our core values: to empower people to be the best
they can be, to be fair accountable, to work collaboratively and above all to be patient-centred.

                                                                          #FutureYouLeeds

Trainee Nursing Associate programme
Nursing associates work with healthcare support workers and registered nurses to deliver care for
patients and the public. Developed in partnership with local health care providers, the FdSc Nursing
Associate Apprenticeship has been designed to offer a flexible pathway for apprentices to achieve the
requirements for the Nursing Associate Practitioner.

How does the FdSc Nursing Associate apprenticeship work?
Apprentices are in full time employment whilst studying for the two-year foundation degree, so they
are able to very quickly utilise their newly acquired knowledge and skills within the workplace for
the benefit of patients and service users. The course includes a variety of practice experiences and
assessments, combined with academic studies designed to complement and underpin the apprentices’
practical learning.
This blended approach is designed to be adaptable and flexible with a combination of face to face
university teaching and online learning.
From the outset of the programme, Nursing Associates will work with our dedicated placement team to
gain access to diverse placement opportunities. Trainee nursing associates will undertake placements in
a variety of settings including primary care, secondary and regional care units, community teams and GP
practices.

                                                                         #FutureYouLeeds

The apprentice must complete a minimum of 2300 hours on the Nursing Associate programme and
at least 1150 hours must be in practice. It is also a requirement that at least 20% of an apprentices’
working week is off-the-job academic study.
Learning is delivered flexibly around the demands of the work place and requires minimal time
away from the workplace, using our tutor-supported, rich media online delivery methods. Learning
is accessible 24/7 and can be delivered simultaneously to various locations using tried and tested
educational technology.
The programme content and assessment strategy are mapped to the Institute for Apprenticeships

What support will you receive?
A higher apprenticeship will require significant commitment by the apprentices and the staff you
appoint to supervise them. The OU has the experience and support in place to help apprentices succeed
and make a positive impact on practice. In addition to a designated academic and professional lead
for healthcare and account management support, we will deploy expert staff to support you and your
apprentices:
Practice Tutor – Help to integrate learning into the workplace and support the delivery of the practice-
based learning modules throughout the programme. At least three times per practice placement
module, the Practice Tutor will meet with the student and their assessor/supervisor. In addition, they
provide support to students via email or phone.
Academic Module Tutors – Facilitate learning for the theory modules throughout the programme
providing personalised tuition, delivering online tutorials, marking assignments and giving extensive
feedback on academic work, in order to develop the apprentice’s academic writing skills.
Nursing Staff Tutor/Education Manager – Support employers to deliver the Nursing Associate Higher
Apprenticeship, to meet both organisational needs and the quality assurance requirements set by the
NMC, with respect to practice learning and learning environment audits.
Apprenticeship Programme Delivery Manager – Supports employers to deliver their apprenticeship
programmes and manages the apprentice journey from start to completion. They also provide employers
with regular apprentice progress data.
English and maths Functional Skills tutors – Provide additional support to apprentices requiring
qualifications in these subjects. These specialist tutors can provide one-to-one support in areas of
challenge and to help prepare the apprentice for the formal qualification tests.

The Apprenticeship is built around the OU’s tried and tested pre-registration nursing programme, which
is delivered over approximately four years. As with any other nursing preregistration programme, as it
is approved by the NMC it requires that apprentices undertake a minimum of 2,300 hours of theoretical
and 2,300 hours of practice learning over the course of the programme.
Apprentices will, on average, spend two days a week on practice learning, one day a week on protected
study time and two days a week undertaking duties within the employment setting as appropriate to an
apprentice nurse.
Our technology-enabled flexible delivery approach, supported by a network of OU nursing staff
deployed across England, means apprentices are not required to undertake day release to attend camp-
based provision. It also means that study time can be adjusted based on service requirements.
To complete the programme, apprentices will be required to undertake an end-point assessment after
successful completion of all other elements of the apprenticeship and we will support apprentices to be
ready for this.

What support will you receive?
We are a national provider with a local presence. Our nursing programmes are supported closely by
academic and practitioners’ colleagues who link with employers to provide on-going management of
the programme delivery - locally-based practice tutors support apprentices and mentors throughout
practice-based learning. Apprentices are also supported by expert academic module tutors, who deliver
all the necessary underpinning theoretical knowledge.
