WELCOME ONCE MORE TO GALA WEEK
STARTING SUNDAY 30th JUNE 2019
Welcome once more to Gala Week, starting Sunday 30th June 2019 the wonderful week on
Broughty Ferry’s Calender of Events will kick off in Castle Green on Sunday 30th June 2019.
Once more, a tremendous amount of effort has been spent on organising all of the weeks events.
Hopefully the weather will be as kind to us as it was in 2018. We want lots and lots of sunshine
and many warm days. When the sun comes out, we have even more and more visitors coming to
Broughty Ferry.
Many many thanks must go to all our 2019 sponsors. A special thank you to Belhaven Brewery,
who once again have supported Gala Week.They have been very generous for many
years.We should all congratulate them on their 300 years of beautiful beers !
The more funds we collect, the more help we can give to local charities, money also goes to boosting
the amount of Christmas Street light fittings, which are totally funded by Broughty Ferry Traders &
gifted to the people of Broughty Ferry & Dundee. A big thank you to the support of D.C.C. who fund
the costs of the light installation.
Can I take this opportunity to thank all the members of the Broughty Ferry Traders Association, who
pay an annual subscription. Their contributions are invaluable. Also can I thank Dundee City Council
for all their help and advice, all the members of our committee, helpers, organisers and a special thank
you to my many friends and family members who have given up all their spare hours for the past year.

Ye Amphibious Ancient bathing Association affectionately known as “The
Phibbies” are a voluntary organisation founded in 1884 with almost 100
members and holds Scottish charity status.
The Phibbies will celebrate their 135th anniversary on the 1st January 2019, and are unique
in being the only club of its kind left in the country. The Phibbies retain a passion for open
water swimming which has remained the main part of their identity since the early days before
indoor swimming pools.
During the summer months we are based at our purpose built clubhouse in Beach Crescent,
Broughty-Ferry which is part of the 14th Century Broughty Castle Harbour Complex. The
swimmers train here for various open water championships, these championships are held
throughout the summer and a full list of swim dates can be found on the notice board at at our
clubhouse or on our website: www.yeaaba.org.
Our Monifieth swim is on Saturday 1st July leaving Monifieth at 3.30pm with our first swimmers
arriving at the finish (Broughty-Ferry Harbour Wall) at approximately 4.15pm .This is a 3.25
mile This is a tidally assisted, point-to-point, straight-line up-river course using the flooding
flow of the river, with a slight bend around the Castle point, touching and turning at the RNLI
jetty before finishing at the harbour.
The Phibbies also offers Learn to Swim classes along with an indoor training programme every
Friday night (term time only) in a 25M pool at St Johns RC High School Community Village
Wing.The swim school which started last year has continued to develop staedily with spaces
being available after the summer holidays. The Phibbies are the only swim club in Dundee to
offer learn to swim classes. If you are interested or wouod like to help out at the pool please
contact our membership secretary Shaun Duff by email: shaunjames.duff@gmail.com.
Last July we sent a team of swimmers to Jersey to participate in the Jersey Round Island
Challenge. Unfortuneately due to adverse wether conditions the teams attempt was postponed
and they now endeavour to complete this challange in July this year.
Volunteering oppurtunities excist for those aged 16-116 to come and escort swimmers (in
a boat), learn boat handling skills and if you prefer dry land training to become an official,
eg. Open Water Judge Level 1. These are fantastic oppurtunities to learn and develop your
team working skills along with aquiring new skills. If you are interested im becoming a
volunteer with The Phibbies contact our volunteer co-ordinadtor Carol-Ann via her email:

This years New Years Dook which is our biggest
fundraiser was very successful with many swimmers
raising money for various charities. We had
Dookers from all over the world including Australia
and Canada. The added attractions-Pipes and
Drums of the 44th Boys Brigade, live music, Hornes
Carnival and the Fancy Dress Parade/Competiotion
all helped to make the day a fantastic sucess. The
2019 New Years Day Dook will take place at 3PM.

THE RULES
Broughty Gala Week’s legendary Window Guessing Competition, first started way
back in 1932, and the rules are exactly the same today! All the participating shops and
businesses are members of The Broughty Ferry Traders’ Association, and have displayed in
their windows an article which they do not sell. The object of the competition is for young
people (under 14) to look at the windows and discover what the ‘odd’ article is. For instance
in the Baker’s shop you might find a teapot or in the newsagent, a paint brush. Remember,
