MEMO 1

5 Jan 2021

Dear Parents & Guardian,

We wish you a very happy new year. As we leave behind 2020, we trust that 2021 will be a more settled
year for all of us. We look ahead expectantly to another year as we learn, grow and deepen our
dependence on God whose mercies are new every morning.

Today we welcomed all our students back in school for another exciting school year! Unlike the previous
years, Covid-19 restrictions had made it necessary for us to start the new school year with a different move.
Instead of having all the students reporting on the first day of school, only Primary 1 (P 1) students reported
while the rest remained at home for another day. This unprecedented move was well received by many,
especially the young students and their parents since there was no P 1 Orientation for them last year. It was
a very calming and well organised event, with almost all students coming in confidently. We hope, with this
positive experience, many would see school as a safe and fun place to learn and grow for the next few
years.

Theme for the year
Our theme for 2021 is “Let Your Light Shine!” taken from Matthew 5:14-16. “You are the light of the world.
A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand,
and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may
see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

Light is one of the most universal and fundamental symbols. Across cultures, it is often associated with
holiness, goodness, knowledge, wisdom and hope. Light is powerful. It brings sight and reveals the unseen.
Not only that, it chases away the darkness, bringing security and comfort to those around. Light is never
meant to be hidden. It has a purpose. Therefore, with this chosen theme for the year, we aspire for our
students to be a positive influence, a powerful light in the community, in their homes and among their
peers, so that people may see their good works and give glory to God. In the weeks to come, we will be
engaging our students, asking them to come up with more suggestions on how they can be a shiny example.
Perhaps, some may choose to be more gracious with their words, show kindness and compassion to those
who need help or be more patient with their siblings at home. There is no end to the possibilities. In this
shared journey, we hope you can actively engage your children in similar conversations at home too.
Together, we will nurture them to be young adults who are anchored in positive values, always seeking to
“Grow. Lead. Serve with Joy”.

GENERAL INFORMATION
1. Safe Management Measures (SMM)
While we may have made good progress in our battle against COVID-19, we must not let our guard down.
MOE has advised schools to continue with these measures in Phase 3 so as to keep the school safe for
teaching and learning. These include the visual screening and temperature-taking of individuals, observance
of high standards of hygiene, and safe distancing between students and staff. Therefore, students who are

1|Page
unwell with flu-like symptoms such as fever or cough will need to seek medical attention and stay away
from school. We seek your understanding and strong support in this. Please ensure your child/ward brings
a working oral digital thermometer (ODT) with him/her to school every day. For the P1 cohort of 2021,
we will be issuing an ODT to every P1 student during the first week of school.

contributions to the school and above all, for his love and care for our students. They will surely remember
him with fond memories. We will all miss him.

6. Safety and Security Measures
• In light of the COVID-19 situation, all visitors will need to comply with the SafeEntry measures when
they sign in at the Security Guard Post, wear the issued pass before proceeding to the GO for
assistance. Do note that the teaching blocks are out of bounds to all visitors.

• Do not approach or confront any student directly should he/she misbehave in or outside the school
premises. You may call or write in to inform the school and we will take the necessary actions.

• Do not drop your child/ward off in front of the General Office after 7 am unless it rains. This will help
to enhance pedestrian safety, facilitate smooth traffic flow into the school premises for authorised
vehicles. You may want to consider dropping-off your child/ward or picking him/her up after school
      at the nearby HDB carparks.

• Do not drop your child/ward at the bus stop right in front of the school because it is a potential risk
      for the other road users.

• Do not park within the school premises during peak hours unless special permission has been
      obtained from our Operation Manager.

We seek your understanding and co-operation to keep the school safe for all.

7. School Communication
Ensure that your child/ward has a copy of the Student’s Handbook. The handbook serves as the primary
communication channel between you and the teachers. Please read it with your child/ward so that you are
able to better appreciate the school policy and its intent.
If you need to meet your child/ward’s teacher, please make an appointment with him/her via email or
telephone before you drop by. Our teachers have a full teaching load and, for the safety of our students,
they are instructed not to leave their classes unattended at all times.

The school has created a Facebook page to engage and better communicate with our stakeholders. Please
log in to http://www.facebook.com/GMSPrimary/ to get the latest updates.

The school is on board Parents Gateway, a mobile app developed by MOE and GovTech for parents to
engage with school, receive information and perform a range of administrative functions such as giving
consent for school trips. You could download the Parents Gateway app on your mobile phone which is
available on iOS and Android platforms. It is important that you download this app for all our notifications
to parents will be sent via Parents Gateway. Hard copy will only be issued upon request.

8. Verification of Individual Student Details & Update of Student Medical Conditions
Form teachers will issue your child/ward’s Individual Student Details form by Wednesday, 13th January
2021. Parents are required to check the child’s/ward’s particulars and make the necessary updates or
amendments on the form. It is important to update your child’s/ward’s medical condition so that the school
is informed and will be able to help your child, if the need arise. Please sign and return all documents to
your child’s/ward’s Form teacher by Wednesday, 20th January 2021.

9. School Calendar of Events
The school calendar of events for Semester 1 is attached. You can be found our school calendar of events
on our school website > Useful Links > Calendar of Events. The url is

10. Students’ personal belongings
The school’s stance is for our students to learn to take responsibility for their belongings and face the
necessary consequences for their actions. This, we believe, will give them the opportunity to learn to be
self-disciplined and independent young adults. Hence, we will not “deliver” your child’s/ward’s forgotten
item to class unless it impacts on his or her learning for the day, such as hearing aids or spectacles.
