Girlguiding Shropshire County Handbook and Directory 2019
Dear All,

Welcome to our County Handbook and Directory for 2019
detailing our County events and activities for you and your
girls. We do hope that you enjoy the events that we have
on offer and that you will share them with your girls. 2018
was a busy year. Brownies enjoyed the Bounce camp,
leaders and girls travelled to Sangam in India to experience a WAGGGS
world centre and all sections enjoyed a day of “Go Wild” in April. Our
guide sleepover event at Climbing the Walls and Go Jumpin was also well
attended, and by request we have a Brownie day at both venues in the
programme for 2019. In this year we have plans for a County campfire,
afternoon tea at Lyneal and of course the Region event Megamix camp in
August. There will also be two BP weekends in the calendar for all girls
still working on the award.

2019 will see all units transition to the updated new programme for all
sections and we will be continuing to support you with local trainings and
lots of ideas to use with your girls. This is the last handbook that Pat and I
will be producing as my role of County Commissioner ends in 2019. It has
been a truly wonderful 5 years, thank you for everything that you do for
the girls in your units and at all other levels in the County. You are a
wonderful team and I have so many great memories of visiting your units,
representing you and seeing the fun and friendships and adventures of
your girls. So a big thank you, again, for everything that is happening in
Shropshire.

Girlguiding gives girls and young women so many opportunities and talking
to our members it is wonderful to hear the things they are taking part in,
the adventures they are having and the opportunities our adult volunteers
give them, have a great year and enjoy your Guiding adventures!

Yours in Guiding,
Clare

          Social Action Projects
                  Shropshire Cares – Shropshire Shares
This is an opportunity to carry out social action at a local level in your
community in a way that your girls choose and of course they can gain
a badge for doing so. The badge is in two
sections, Shropshire cares is about being active
in the community, maybe carol singing at an
old peoples home or planting trees along the
   canal. Shropshire shares involves collecting
and giving, this maybe toiletries for the Red
Box Project, food for the foodbank or animal
food for the cats and dogs home. Make your
challenges as quirky as you want and don’t forget to
   share them on social media

The Baden-Powell Challenge Award is the ultimate achievement for

undertaken when a Guide has completed/almost completed
the requirements for The B-P Challenge. To ensure the

Walking Trainings
Walking is a great way to get out and explore your local area and the
wider countryside, and is a popular activity for our members. The
Girlguiding Walking Scheme will help you improve your skills in
navigation, route finding and group management to lead groups
confidently in the countryside. Contact the County Walking Adviser who
will arrange training for individuals.

Commissioner Support
This will again be a 1 day event Sat 18th May, held concurrently with the
Spring LQ Weekend at Sutton Hill Community Centre, and will offer
training on topics specifically requested by Commissioners, plus a chance
to Air, Share and network with
Commissioner peers from around the
County.
Save the date – all Commissioners will
receive an individual invitation.
Going Away With Scheme Workshop Day
A day of practical training to help those hoping to
complete a Going Away With Qualification in 2019
(or beyond) will be offered alongside the Spring LQ
training on Sunday 10th February at The Phoenix
Centre Market Drayton. Appropriate for all sections
and all Going Away With Modules.

1st Response Refreshers
For those who have already achieved the full 1st Response Course, but
wish to undertake the three yearly renewal – this session will be offered
at our LQ weekends as follows:

                           - Sunday 10th February at Market Drayton
                           - Saturday 18th May at Sutton Hill
                           - Saturday 5th October at Bayston Hill
Arrangement will also be made for anyone who has renewed their
external qualification to complete the renewal of their Girlguiding
module.
Further sessions can be arranged in Divisions through the Training Co-
ordinator.

Safe Space Training for All Leaders and
Commissioners
Safe Space training has changed and is becoming mandatory, at a level
appropriate to your role. Thus we invite all members to join the Safe
Space sessions at the LQ weekends as well as those offered separately at
County Day and by arrangement, in Division. At each Leadership
Qualification weekend there will be two Safe Space
sessions and all Leaders and Commissioners who
have not been to this session are invited to join.
To see what levels you will need, please check out
                      the Girlguiding website.
Permits Weekend - Bickley Coppice - Camp
5th – 7th July 2019

An opportunity for Guides or Senior Section members to hold their permit
camp and gain the qualification.

The permit camp is an opportunity for a Guide or Senior Section member
to take her Patrol or group away and gain the camp permit. Girls will be
self-sufficient and camp and cater for
themselves but with adults on site if
required. There will be a camp fire on
the Saturday evening and groups are
welcome to come along to this. Please
contact the OAA to book or for more
details.

Skills Day
In response to requests, this day will be a fun day for Leaders and other
Volunteers to learn or refresh traditional Guiding skills that can be shared
with the girls. These will cover outdoor skills such as maps
and compasses, camping skills such as gadgets,
pioneering and camp cooking, unit traditions such
as marching and flags, campfire singing, and games
and crafts for all ages. It will be held on 21st
September – keep the date!

Programme Training Week
As in the previous 2 years, training will be held in every Division
at the end of the summer holidays, on 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th
September. Please arrange not to hold meetings that week, so
that all of the unit team can attend. This year’s training will be
concerned with more detailed training on aspects of the
programme as we retire the previous programme. Specific
dates in each Division will be agreed with Division
Commissioners and published via the website.
