GIRLS’ HOCKEY MEDIA GUIDE
BENILDE-ST. MARGARET’S
Welcome to today’s BSM Girls’ Hockey game. I am so excited
that our tremendous student athletes have this opportunity
to compete. It certainly has been a challenge for coaches and
athletes to overcome the many obstacles presented to them in
preparation for this season. The safety of all those involved in
our Girls’ Hockey program has been of the utmost importance.
The BSM Girls’ Hockey program’s GPA is always well above
3.0 and the girls are leaders both in and out of the classroom.
Girl hockey players are active in service, leaders in faith, and
emulate what a BSM student athlete is all about.

KELLY PANNEK : VARSITY ASSOCIATE COACH
Kelly is entering her first year on the Red Knight coaching staff, however she is no stranger to the
program. Kelly graduated from BSM in 2014 and has since continued her hockey career with the
University of Minnesota and the U.S. Women’s National team. During her time at the Gophers,
Kelly was a part of two National Championship winning teams and led the team as a captain her
senior year.
In between her junior and senior year, Kelly had the experience of a lifetime as a member of Team
USA at the 2018 Olympics in PyeongChang, where she and her teammates won Gold. In addition
to winning an Olympic Gold Medal, she has also won gold at two World Championships in
2017 and 2019. Kelly is still actively playing and pursing another opportunity at Gold at the 2022
Olympics in Beijing.
This will be Kelly’s second year coaching at the High School level. She spent last season on the
bench of the Bloomington Jefferson Girls’ Varsity team.
KACY AMBROZ : VARSITY ASSISTANT COACH
Coach Kacy Ambroz is also starting her third year of coaching for Benilde St. Margarets. Kacy
began her playing career in New Prague, MN, and helped lead her high school team to four
state appearances. From there, she played at the U of MN-Duluth and led her team to a National
Championship as a Sophomore. Kacy was a team captain her Senior season.
Her professional hockey career took her to the Czech Republic and Switzerland, where she helped
her team win the Swiss National Championship. Coach Ambroz has been involved in coaching at
the youth level for 8 years, and she coached at the professional level in 2017-18 for the Boston
Blades in the CWHL. Hockey is a family affair with Kacy’s parents, Bob and Sue, raising all hockey
players. Brother Matt played at the U of Nebraska-Omaha and brother Seth played at the U of MN-
Twin Cities. Kacy is excited to be a part of the BSM program and is grateful for the opportunity to
give back to the game she loves. Kacy currently works as an Insurance Producer for Steinhauer

GREGG MELLANG : VARSITY ASSISTANT COACH/GOALIE COACH
Gregg is in his fourth season for BSM Girls’ Hockey. Gregg is an Assistant Coach as well as the
Goalie Coach for the program. Gregg is a graduate of Edina-West High School. He earned a
Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Business at the U of MN-Twin Cities and a Masters in
Marketing at the U of St. Thomas.
He is currently the Director of Sales and Marketing for a local Manufacturers Rep firm. He has
also been an Adjunct Professor at the U of Northwestern-St. Paul for 8 years. He loves the game
of hockey and has coached for 19 years in the Bloomington Jefferson Association. He coached
at every level within the program, most recently with the Bantam AA team. Gregg was also the
SHJON PODEIN : VARSITY HEAD COACH Director of Goalie Development for the association for 7 years. Gregg and his wife, Cindy, reside

Shjon grew up in Rochester, Minnesota, graduating from John Marshall High School in 1986 KEVIN GRAY : VARSITY ASSISTANT COACH
and attending the University of MN-Duluth, where he graduated in 1990 with a Liberal Arts Kevin Gray is in his 10th year of coaching Girls’ High School Hockey and first with BSM. Prior to
degree. Shjon played hockey in the NHL for more than 10 years, most notably with the Colorado BSM, he was the co-Head coach for the Maple Grove Girls’ Hockey program.

(18) and Junior (14). The Podeins reside in St. Louis Park and are excited to be a part of the great in 2020 and Minnesota’s Class AA Co-Head Coach of the Year in 2020 at Maple Grove. Kevin has
tradition that is BSM hockey. also coached youth hockey and baseball since 1994.
Coach Gray is a graduate of St. Louis Park High School, where he was a 2 time letter winner in
hockey and baseball, before attending Bemidji State University where he lettered in golf. Kevin
is the owner of National Insurance Brokers Agency and resides in Plymouth with his wife, Stacy.
They are the very proud parents of their 2 children Brayden (21) and Bailey (14).

KATE SCHIPPER : HEAD JV COACH
Kate graduated from the University of MN-Twin Cities in 2017 with majors in Marketing and
GOALTENDING Entrepreneurial Management. While at the U of M, Kate played for the Gopher Women’s
Hockey team for 4 years and won 2 National Championships. This past season, Kate also played
for the Minnesota Whitecaps and won the Isobel Cup.
