Sport Program Glen Waverley
Welcome to Wesley Sport. We look forward to providing your child with many positive sporting experiences.

It is Wesley policy that all students participate in the Sport Program from the time they enter the College.

Years 7, 8 and 9 students are required to participate in two training sessions during the week and compete on a
Saturday (usually mornings) or occasionally Friday after school, from the beginning of the school year.

Years 10 and 11 students are required to complete a minimum of two seasons of co-curricular activity per
year, one of which must be a summer or winter sport. However they can elect to complete an additional summer or
winter sport to complete their minimum co-curricular commitment of two activities which includes training during the
week and competing on a Saturday (usually mornings) or occasionally Friday after school, from the beginning of the
school year.

Year 12 students are required to complete a minimum of one season of sport. Students can elect to complete
a summer and/or winter sport to complete their minimum co-curricular commitment which includes training during
the week and competing on a Saturday (usually mornings) or occasionally Friday after school, from the beginning of
the school year.

This policy is based on the following understandings:

 Past experience shows that students make a smoother transition into Wesley when they become involved in the
camaraderie of competitive Wesley Sport at the start of the school year
 To be competitive in Associated Public Schools/Associated Grammar Schools Victoria competition sport,
Wesley teams must include our most talented players in each sport
 Early exposure to coaching during both training and competition leads to more rapid skill development in all
    students

With the vast majority of community summer competitions not beginning until later in the year, this allows time to
plan community sport commitments, so that there will be no clash with Wesley Sport from February 2018.
Should your child wish to begin a community summer season, and by all means do so, please be aware that
exemptions from Wesley Sport will not be granted to those wishing to complete a community season. Once school
starts, Wesley sport takes priority.

The Wesley Sports Directorate looks forward to working with your child to maximise their sporting potential in the
years to come.

Head of Sport

Wesley College Sport Exemption Policy

Whilst it is compulsory for Wesley College students to be involved in the Wesley Sport Program, it is
appreciated that exceptional circumstances may dictate that a student may require an exemption. The
following guidelines should be taken into consideration when considering applying for an exemption.

 Training exemptions are only granted for physical reasons eg long-term injury/illness

 Saturday exemptions may be granted for the following reasons:

 If the student is involved in a Religious Ceremony eg Bar Mitzvah/Bat Mitzvah
 If the student is playing at a high level in a sport Wesley does not offer (to be determined by the Head
of School, Head of Campus, the Campus Sports Manager and the Head of Sport) e.g. State Nominated
          Talent Pathway
 If the student is studying a language and classes clash with Saturday Sport
 If the student has a long-term injury or illness

 The parents/guardians must apply in writing including the reason as to why the exemption is sought and any
relevant documentation eg medical certificate, language school details must be provided.

 Applications must be received by the start of the school year and must be addressed to the Campus Sports
Manager. A decision will be made after consultation with the Head of Campus and Head of Sport.

 It is expected that students should compete in at least one season of sport during the year.

Please note students will normally only be granted an exemption for one season on an annual basis.

Wesley College Sport Program: Rationale and Goals
Wesley College Sport is a logical extension of all the components of the Wesley College Physical Education
Program. Wesley Sport involves education about sport, through sport and for participation in sport and is
concerned with:
 Further development of the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values gained through physical education
 Encouraging all students to maximise their potential, and to use their knowledge and skills in an appropriate
  competitive sporting environment
 Developing knowledge, skills, tactics, strategies, behaviour and fitness specific to the sport(s) chosen
 Developing players as skilled performers and knowledgeable spectators in a whole range of individual and team
  competitive sports
 Developing interested players as prospective coaches, referees, umpires, trainers and administrators of sport

The Aims of the Wesley Sport Program
Wesley College is committed to the Associated Public Schools (APS) and Associated Grammar Schools Victoria
(AGSV/APS) sport competition and as such, Wesley Sport aims to provide an equal opportunity for boys and girls
to:

 Experience fun, enjoyment and a measure of success for all
 Develop skills and fitness specific to particular sports so that students can experience success through enjoyable
  participation in those sports
 Encourage participation by all students in sporting activities commensurate to their physical, mental, social,
  emotional and skill development
 Play a wide variety of sports and experience the cooperative and competitive requirements of those sports
 Develop the capacity to make reasoned decisions about ethical issues in sport that will lead to good player and
  spectator behaviour
 Develop and apply knowledge and understanding of:

 The capabilities and limitations of the human body in the performance of sport
 Games, tactics, strategies, rules and umpiring
 Administration, coaching, and basic sports medicine
 Good sporting behaviour - self control, discipline, cooperation, tolerance, respect for others

 Contribute, through participation, to the social, cognitive, emotional, and aesthetic aspects of the individual’s
  development

10
The Outcomes of the Wesley Sport Program
Regular participation by girls and boys in Wesley sport:
 Assists with the development of health and fitness, body awareness and management, and normal body growth and
development, including the control of body weight
 Helps to promote development of a positive attitude towards exercise and a healthy life-style
 Promotes a positive self-image, the result of developing a healthy body, competence in physical skills, and the ability to
     handle success and failure
 Promotes increased social ease between participants with improvement in cooperation, acceptance, tolerance and the
valuing of each other’s worth as physically active people
 Assists with the refinement of skills which can be used for immediate and long-term use of leisure time
 Provides opportunity for personal decision-making based on knowledge and interests
 Develops aesthetic appreciation of body movement and performance in sports skills

Competition and Excellence in Wesley Sport

The Wesley Sport Program is founded on competition be it:
 Striving for excellence in performance
 Training enthusiastically for self improvement
 Interacting with one’s opponent as the person who enables one to execute a skill or quality performance
The Wesley College Sport Program takes into account the fact that competition being linked solely with
winning/losing can create negative pressures on a student. To this end, the emphasis on winning shifts throughout
the developmental stages of schooling and from team to team within any year level. As a result, in younger and
less skilled teams the emphasis is on improvement, enjoyment and equality of opportunity, however in senior years,
College and ‘A’ teams, in addition to the previously expressed aims, success, as measured by winning, is most
definitely a shared goal.

11
Selection of Teams/Training Squads
Training squad/team selections are based on the skill, fitness level and game sense of the students. Selections will
be overseen by Head Coaches and/or Campus Sports Managers, Head of Sport and by the coaches/team
managers.

Firsts’ teams will be made up of the best players regardless of year level and age, if such players are up to the
strength and stamina required for the sport. These students will be selected from across the three campuses.
Trials will be conducted for each sport.

College year level teams will consist of the best students in that sport at that year level from the three Wesley
campuses.

‘A’ level campus teams will consist of the best students on that campus in that sport and at that year level.

                           Attendance, Discipline Policy and Uniform

Attendance
Students are required to attend all training sessions, be available for selection in all fixtures and attend fixtures if
selected.

Injuries or illness are not uncommon, and the coach should not ask an injured or ill player to participate in training
or fixtures, they may however be required to attend training and/or fixtures.

A player must notify the coach/team manager via communication from home, of any illness or injury where
possible prior to a training session or game, not after training or after the game. If a player is unavailable for a
Saturday game communication must be given to the coach/team manager on the first training session of the week
or in the case of a sudden illness the coach/team manager or Campus Sports Manager should be contacted on the
Friday either at school or via mobile phone. Please do not leave a text message, you must speak with the coach.

In the case of serious injury and a medical certificate has been provided, a decision as to when the student returns
to the sport program will be arranged in consultation with the parents. At all times the student’s welfare will be our
highest priority.

12
If a player misses training without permission, the coach/team manager should discipline the player as the
coach/team manager sees fit. If a player misses sessions without explanation then the coach/team manager must
pass the student’s name on to the Campus Sports Manager, who will arrange appropriate disciplinary action.

If a player misses a fixture and the coach/team manager is absolutely certain that the student was aware that he or
she was expected to be at the game, the coach/team manager must refer the student to the Campus Sports
Manager who will arrange the appropriate disciplinary action.

Disciplinary Action

Any student who misses two training sessions without satisfactory written explanation will be followed up by the
Campus Sports Manager.

Any student who does not attend a Saturday competition without a satisfactory written explanation will be followed
up by the Campus Sports Manager. Detentions may be arranged by the Campus Sports Manager and occur in
addition to that student’s sport commitment for that Saturday.

Any student who requires repeated disciplinary action for attendance or uniform violations will be required to
discuss the matter with the Campus Sports Manager, Head of Campus or Head of Sport.

Sport Uniform

Information regarding Sport Uniform can be obtained from the Uniform Shop.
