25th May 2018
Dear Parents,
It has been wonderful to have some lovely summer weather recently and to see the
children getting out and about during the first half of this term – exploring our
grounds, making the most of Forest School, playing sports on the playing fields and,
of course, carrying out activities in the playgrounds. I am always excited to see
children being inspired and challenged to learn both outside and inside the
classroom and love it when they come to tell me all about it.
Recently we have had some excellent examples of this, for example during our
Maths morning – with Reception children busy measuring and weighing outside,
and with Kindergarten busy finding numbers in Forest School! Year One and Two
had a very exciting relay this year - with the winning team coming first by only one
point, and a tie-break for the bronze medals! Some children have also already been
on their topic-related visit, which has brought their learning to life and produced
excellent work and discussion as a result. We have had Year Two out and about
in Cheltenham, finding out some very interesting facts, and Year One and Two
enjoying wonderful Science visits to Sandfield Farm. Year One had an inspiring visit
to the Birmingham sea-life centre, and after half-term Kindergarten will also have
a special farm visit whilst Reception will enjoy meeting animals at the ‘Cotswold
Wildlife Park’! We always find that these educational visits are so valuable, and
always stimulate further research and deeper learning. Before half-term starts, we
are still looking forward to some other special events: the Dance Show on Thursday
and the Year One and Two Biathlon (running and swimming).
Once again, we were very pleased to have wonderful results from the Cheltenham
Festival - for our Singing Squirrels, the Squirrel Strings and the Year Two Choral
Speaking Group. We were delighted with the performances and were so proud of
the children – they represented the school superbly, demonstrating real confidence,
enjoyment and enthusiasm. We were thrilled to come first and win two lovely
trophies for our Squirrel Strings and Choral Speaking and although we
didn’t manage to win the cup for singing this year, the children sang brilliantly and
were a credit to the school, gaining a very high mark with ‘Honours’. Well done to
all the children involved and to all the teachers for working so hard! One important event just after half-term to add to your calendar is our annual ‘Parents’ Charity Fair’. This year we are supporting the ‘Pied Piper Appeal’ and I do hope you will be able to join us on Friday June 8th during the afternoon, to have fun and support the school in raising money for this worthwhile charity. I have already sent out a letter containing details - please do come and help if you are able (even if you just have half an hour) as there are still stalls which need parent volunteers if they are to run. Thank you once again to all the parent reps who have already put in a lot of thought and work into making the event a success, creating activities and stalls for us to enjoy. I would also like to mention a new exciting social event - our special ‘Ladies Shopping Night’ on Thursday June 14th, called ’Sip and Shop’ Several of our parents will be showcasing their businesses and parents will be able to buy on the night, for example jewellery, clothing, essential oils. At the end of term, we will be sad that Mrs Jane Holyfield will be semi-retiring and although she will no longer be working full-time, we are very glad that she will be staying and working with us for 2 days a week. Mrs Holyfield has been with us at the Pre-Prep for 20 years and many children have benefitted from her excellent care, teaching and support - I know that pupils and parents as well as the staff will want to say a special thank you! As a result we will be appointing a new Teaching Assistant after half-term and I will let you know of the successful candidate in due course. Shortly after our return from half-term, I will be writing to let you know class teachers for next year. As most of you know, class groups remain the same, except for Nursery which will become two Kindergarten classes. When considering next year, we look carefully at the children in the class and the best teacher for each group. Classes will go to their new teachers on ‘Move-up’ morning, Friday 22nd June, and spend the morning with their new teachers getting ready for an exciting new class in September. Finally, with only four weeks, the next half of term will be action-packed – we are looking forward to many wonderful events, including Forest School Fun Day, our summer performance, ‘Underwater Adventure’ and Sports Day! If the weather continues to be sunny after half-term, please don’t forget to apply a long-lasting, high factor sun screen before children arrive at school and to send in their named school uniform sun hat! I hope you have a very happy and relaxing half-term and I look forward to seeing you all at our many exciting events after half-term. With best wishes Dr Carolyn Shelley Headmistress

This is a reminder not to bring snacks

other children. This is an important
school policy as we have several
children with severe food allergies or
special diets and we wish to ensure
that every child is safe and healthy at
school.
As you know, you may bring birthday
cake into school, which we will wrap up
and let children take home with them
at the end of the day, to be eaten at
home.
Many thanks for your co-operation!Contact Details

The Dean Close Parents’ Network provides parents with
an opportunity to be in better contact with their own
year group. It helps parents to meet with other
parents, become better acquainted with their child’s
year group and be better informed about the sporting
and social activities which are available at Dean Close.
Most importantly the Parents’ Network hopes to help
make your experience of being a Dean Close School
parent a sociable and enjoyable experience.
Each year group has a closed group on Facebook which
is administered by the Parent Representative. Please
do contact your Parent Representative if you would like
to join the Facebook group and to make contact with
other parents in your child’s year group.

Brierley-JonesPARENTS’ PRAYER
FELLOWSHIP
Dear Parents
At Dean Close we believe in the importance of prayer in underpinning all
that we are and do as a School. The Prayer Fellowship is, therefore, a
key part of supporting and upholding the School.
The Prayer Fellowship is an informal gathering of parents from the
Pre-Prep, Prep and Senior Schools who meet over coffee to pray for the
whole School. All are welcome to join us.
We meet fortnightly on a Friday in Bayley House (the home
of John Ash). Our parent representative is Lindsay Jack; if you
require any further information please do not hesitate to contact Lindsay
at lindsay.jack@tenastic.com or Reverend John Ash at
jcash@deanclose.org.uk.
The timings are in the schedule below. All are welcome to join us for a
short Communion service at 8.25am in the Chapel before walking over to
Bayley House. We always aim to wrap things up by 9.30am.
We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible.
Date Time Location
Friday 15th June 8.30am - 9.30am Bayley House

Uniform Exchange
Kate Wood: 01242 258016 Mobile: 07999 718666
Email: kwood@deanclose.org.uk
The School Shop offers a personalised uniform fitting service to those joining the
school, as well as a wide selection of sports equipment, stationery and toiletries.
To find out more information such as uniform lists, opening times and price lists
please go to the School website.
There are always a large number of new pupils joining the school each September
and, as you will appreciate, a uniform fitting can take some time to complete. We
would therefore urge you to contact us as soon as possible to make an appointment
for your child’s fitting. For the September 2018 intake these appointments are from
Monday 18th June until Friday 29th June
There can be considerable congestion in the shop during August and September as
there are always a number of overseas students who are unable to come at any
other time. In order to ease the pressure a little, it would be greatly appreciated if
as many new pupils as possible could arrange their appointments for before the
summer holiday. This may seem early considering the term does not begin until
September but we will of course make an allowance for growth and items can be
changed or refunded if necessary.
The School Shop is located in the Sports Hall off Shelburne Road. The entrance is
opposite to the Main Gate of Dean Close Senior School.
Please contact the shop 01242 258016 in the first instance to book your
appointment.
