   From the Local History Room
                Iranian Hostage Crisis
               Ended Forty Years Ago

Presidential inaugurations, like the administrations they represent,
come and go. But forty years ago, Newburgh and New Windsor were
thrust in the limelight after the inauguration of Ronald Reagan as the
40th President of the United States on January 20, 1981. On that day,
the 52 U.S. hostages held at the U.S. embassy in Teheran, Iran, were
released, ending the 444-day Iranian Hostage Crisis. After a short
stop over in West Germany for initial health checks, the former
hostages flew back to America – first landing at Stewart International
Airport to a Hudson Valley heroes’ welcome.

The crisis began when Iranian students, outraged that the U.S.
government had allowed the ill Shah of Iran to travel to the U.S. for
medical treatment, stormed the U.S. embassy in Teheran capturing
hostages. The Ayatollah Khomeini, Iran’s political leader, took over
the hostage situation from the students. The Ayatollah released some
hostages, but refused all diplomatic appeals to release the remaining
52 hostages. President Jimmy Carter then ordered a rescue mission
that failed miserably. President Carter then lost his re-election
bid.
On January 20, 1981, that was all behind the nation. The swearing
in of President Ronald Reagan and negotiations facilitated by the
Algerian government, the former hostages were coming home. Hazel
V. Owens, a local resident, took pictures of the former hostages’
return to American soil. The pictures are reproduced here.
