Strategic Plan 2019-2022
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Hinton Adult Learning Society has been in operation since 1984. The Hinton Adult
Learning Society (HALS) is a registered charity administered by a volunteer board and currently
eight paid team members.
Beginning in 1984, HALS original name was Hinton Further Education. Between 1987
and 2006, Hinton Further Education and the Hinton Adult Literacy Centre were housed in the
Dr. Duncan Murray Recreation Centre, Ecole Mountainview School, and the Yellowhead Region
Education Consortium (YREC) on Pembina Avenue. In 2006, through efforts of the Board and
a collaborative fundraising effort with the Town of Hinton, a permanent home adjacent to the
Hinton Municipal Library was finally established. In 2015, after growing too large for that space,
HALS moved to 110E Brewster Drive. In 1994, the name of Hinton Further Education was
changed to the Hinton Community Adult Learning Council (HCALC). In 2009, the Hinton
Community Adult Learning Council formed the Hinton Adult Learning Society (HALS) under the
Alberta Societies Act. In 2012, HALS became a Registered Charity. In 2015, the operating name
of Hinton Employment and Learning Place (HELP) was implemented. The branding of the new
name has been very successful, and we are appropriately known as HELP throughout the
community and region.
Hinton Adult Learning Society is a very well respected community organization. HALS is
known for their identification and undertaking of service gaps in the community. HALS has a
strong, dedicated team, who advocates for clients in order for them to receive the best services
possible. HALS has a diverse, distinct, educated and caring board who strives to ensure the
organization is operating at its best.
Progressive thinking, willingness to take risks and embracing new opportunities has
helped Hinton Adult Learning Society grow and expand significantly in the past five years. With
a new and revised strategic direction, HALS is confident we will meet the expectations of our
mission, vision and values.Hinton Adult Learning Society O/A Hinton Employment & Learning Place Strategic Plan 2019-2022 MISSION, VISION AND VALUES Vision Hinton Adult Learning Society leads and inspires our community to be safe, accepting and inclusive. Mission Hinton Adult Learning Society empowers and advocates for community members to learn and grow in a supportive environment. We acknowledge and reduce barriers to create an inclusive community where everyone feels valued, safe and involved. Values The following values reflect Hinton Adult Learning Society’s core ideology: Quality Pro-active Inclusive Caring Dignity Self-Care Integrity Fair Non-judgmental Holistic Respect Diversity Dedication Passion Life-long learning Responsible Responsiveness Accountability Team Work Evolving Initiative Courageous Professional Adaptable Client-Centered Value humans equally Empowerment
Hinton Adult Learning Society O/A Hinton Employment & Learning Place Strategic Plan 2019-2022 STRATEGIC DIRECTION Hinton Adult Learning Society has determined five areas to focus efforts in the next three years. These include: • Homelessness: In 2016, after discussion with many of our employment clients, it was determined that more than half of our clients were homeless, provisionally housed, or at risk of becoming homeless. They discussed different resources that would help make their lives easier. From these discussions, and a community consultation, Freddy’s Homeless Resource Room was developed. Freddy’s is funded by donations, grants, and other revenue. Freddy’s includes: Accessible Washroom and Shower, Washing Machine and Dryer, Kitchenette (microwave, coffee maker, tea kettle). We provide food and beverages for clients while using the resource room. Freddy’s has a computer with access to the internet, telephone, television and comfortable couches and chairs. Our goal is to build a trusting relationship with this vulnerable group, so we can help them first with their basic needs (food, clothing, shelter), followed by helping with their other needs, including social services and health care. Eventually, our goal is to help get these citizens into permanent housing. We also have a generic mailbox set up, for people to use, which is already in use by a number of people. We always have food available for them to take home as well, plus toiletries, some clothing and underwear. HALS has recently developed a full time Homelessness Coordinator position, to help our clients with all of their needs, as well as to ensure sustainable funding for the program. • Community Adult Learning Program (CALP): Hinton Adult Learning Society has been facilitating CALP since 1984. This is our 35th year successfully running the program. Although it has gone through many changes, the vision of CALP has remained the same; “Changing lives through adult foundational learning in connected communities”. HALS strives to provide non-credit foundational learning opportunities for adults in Hinton and area. CALP is funded by Alberta Advanced Education. Courses, learning activities, and information sessions are in the following categories and offered through classes, or small groups, or one on one tutoring: Adult Literacy, Family Literacy, Community Capacity Building, Numeracy, English Language Learning, Basic Computer Skills, and Foundational Life Skills. We also offer Learner Support Services such as: access to a safe and welcoming learning environment, access to and assistance with basic technology, Information about post- secondary learning, access to and assistance with learning opportunities offered by a partner organization, mentorship to adult learners, job search and/or resume support, assistance with forms, assistance and referrals to newcomers, referrals to community supports and services.
Hinton Adult Learning Society O/A Hinton Employment & Learning Place Strategic Plan 2019-2022 • Employment: In 2015, HALS was successful in securing the employment services contract through Alberta Community and Social Services. We provided assistance to job seekers in all areas of their job search. This contract was complete in 2018, and we were unsuccessful with renewing it. However, we did receive the contract in Edson in November, 2018. We also hold the Employment Services for Persons with Disabilities and Multiple Barriers in Hinton. We provide workshops on employability including: resume writing, interview skills, cover letter development, job search, online applications, basic computer skills, essential skills training, assertiveness, anger control, workplace stress, etc. We also hold a weekly job seekers club, which is open to the public. All clients are referred thorough Alberta Supports, and our delivery of the programs are in the Alberta Supports offices in Edson and Hinton. We have also provided employment related workshops to different businesses throughout Hinton, GPRC and the Friendship Centre. Other employment contracts we have facilitated include Workplace Training and Transition to Employment Services. • Social Services: Because of the many vulnerable people who walk through our door, HALS has evolved into the world of social services. We are able to fill many service gaps in the community. We provide advocacy for our clients, referrals to community organizations, computer access, PDD support, emotional support, mentorship, and general support services. We also developed our community kitchen, Beverley’s, because of the need to ensure our clients and community members were not hungry. Having services under one roof makes our clients feel safe, comfortable and more likely to stay and have their needs met. • General Services: Hinton Adult Learning Society is a progressive organization, and is always looking for different ways to help make our community a better place. We have added many services to our organization including: Gladue Reports, Commissioner of Oaths, Poverty Simulation, Share Shop, Referrals and Advocacy. As we see a need in our community, or we feel a service will be a good fit, we will look at how we can bring it into our organization.
