INSPIRATIONAL CORNER: The Race and Those Who Cheer Us On On page 20 we get to enjoy reading about a neighbor whose later life has been filled with training and running in marathons. Running a marathon requires stamina and determination. There is no letting up or sitting on the sidelines for the runner who finishes. Some might run the whole way, and some might walk part of the way; but the goal is always to finish those 26.2 miles by crossing the finish line. Life resembles a marathon. Each day is a new experience and we are always stepping into our future. When there are troubles, heartache and trials, the load can seem hard to bear. As we and never quit! No extra spiritual fat, no parasitic sins. Keep your get older we see that looking back does not serve us in this eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we’re marathon, unless it is to reminisce about fond memories. As in. Study how he did it. Because He never lost sight of where we look forward we wonder what new goals are needed, what He was headed—that exhilarating finish in and with God— plans can still come to fruition. He could put up with anything along the way: Cross, shame, And then we become aware that there are generations after us, whatever. And now He’s there, in the place of honor, right coming up in the timeline who have to run the marathon of life alongside God. When you find yourselves flagging in your faith, as well. Whether we acknowledge it or not, they watch our lives. go over that story again, item by item, that long litany of hostility They look for clues without articulating it. Have we figured out He plowed through. That will shoot adrenaline into your souls!” some life hacks that work well to keep us going? Do we have (Message version) some answers for some of the toughest life hurdles? “For the LORD is good; His mercy is everlasting; and His truth A song by Twila Paris captures the endureth to all generations” (Psalm 100:5). God’s absolute goodness is a clue that we need to understand the generations essence of this beautiful truth: are on His heart. Yes, we have the generations sprawling out in Mindful of many waiting to run Chorus: front of us to take the baton and keep running, but we also have Destined to finish what you've begun Runner, when the road is long a cloud of witnesses that have gone before us, cheering us on! Colonel Dave Casmus In 1972, 18-year old Dave Casmus decided to join the Army, and accepted an ROTC scholarship, hoping to finance his college education. He recalls, “Little did I know I would fall in love with soldiers, soldiering, and serving my country. I ended up staying in the Army for 24 years, 5 months, and 22 days--without a single regret.” The broad scope of Colonel Casmus’ military service includes the following: two tours of duty at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Fort Bliss, Texas, and Germany. He was also stationed in the Republic of Korea, Fort Campbell, Kentucky, The White House, Fort Bliss, Texas, Fort Benning Georgia, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, for training and advanced military education. He was deployed to Grenada for Operation Urgent Fury, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait during Operation Southern Watch, and Israel for Operation Noble Safeguard. “Like all Army officers, leading & training soldiers is the highest calling you can have, and I led and trained soldiers whose primary mission was to protect the skies overhead so that maneuver and support units had freedom of action,” explains Dave. Some of 94th ADA Brigade Commander in Darmstadt , Germany the systems he worked with are now museum pieces, like the HAWK Missile System and VULCAN Air Defense Gun. Other systems he worked on are still are in use, like the STINGER Missile, the AVENGER Missile System, and the PATRIOT Air Defense System. Dave feels blessed to have served in Airborne and Air Assault Divisions like the famous 82nd Airborne and 101st Airborne Divisions. He led small units like Vulcan and Stinger Platoons in the 82nd Airborne Division, and commanded a Vulcan / Stinger Battery in the 82d Airborne Division, an Avenger / Stinger Battalion in the 101st Airborne Division. Dave feels fortunate to have commanded two Patriot Brigades: one in Germany that was part of NATO, and one at Fort Bliss, Texas, that was committed to the South Korea mission area. He was also part of testing and fielding both the Command and Control of Forward Area Air Defense Systems and the Patriot Advanced Capability-3 System, which is the current “Hit to Kill Missile” that is primarily used to defend against Tactical Ballistic Missiles, or as they are more commonly known “TBMs.” He also had the unique opportunity as a Captain to serve as the Aide de Camp to the Commanding General of Fort Bliss Texas for two years. In describing his service at the White House, Dave explains, “As a Lieutenant Colonel I served as the Military Aide to the Vice President of the United States for two and half years. Primary duties included ensuring the continuity of our government in emergency situations. Those emergencies are full spectrum in their scope--everything from nuclear exchanges to something as mundane as a toxic spill. Most folks know that the Military Aides are responsible for carrying the Nuclear Codes or the ‘Football.’ However, the Aides also carry the documents required for the procedures under the 25th Amendment, which addresses the succession to the presidency and establishes procedures both for filling a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, as well as responding to presidential disabilities.” Dave Casmus in 2022 Colonel Casmus earned 10 Medals, 2 Ribbons, and 4 Qualification Badges on active duty. The highest award was the Defense Superior Service Medal, and his most prized award is the Army Master Parachutist Badge, signifying his Jumpmaster Qualification and over one hundred Military Parachute jumps. He adds, “I loved every minute of being a soldier and a paratrooper and every minute of being around soldiers. I am blessed to have an extremely supportive Army wife and an “Army brat” daughter, who both accepted every move as a new experience and opportunity to explore new locations and countries. The challenge was then (and now) finding the words to express my sincere gratitude to the soldiers, my subordinate leaders, and their families for their sacrifices and selfless service to our nation, dedication to the Army, and without fail accomplishing all the missions assigned to our units.” We honor you, Colonel Dave Casmus, and thank you for your vast and lengthy service to our country! ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 8 | Westbrook Village LIVING January 2023

WV Fine Arts Featured Member Artist – with Glen Littlefield Throughout the 1960’s and early 1970’s, I painted, pinstriped and designed graphic art on motorcycles. Some of my motorcycle work has appeared in magazines, including the August 1971 cover of Street Chopper magazine. I moved to Westbrook Village in March of 2019 with Irene, my wife of more than 50 years. I joined the Fine Arts Club about a year later. There is always something to learn at the monthly demonstrations held by the club. I enjoy displaying my work at the shows and sales, as they allow me to meet people and talk with other artists. Top Right: Glen Littlefield Middle Left: Glen enjoys painting nature Middle: Sailing the Waves by Glen Littlefield Middle Right: Freedom on the eagles face captured by Glen Littlefield Bottom Right: Clownfish by Glen Littlefield In 2015 at the age of 75 I started creating fine art, and have never had any formal training. Acrylic on canvas is my primary medium. I began with sea life and the clown fish pictured here was my third painting. Other subjects have included birds, trees, boats, abstracts and currently I am painting animals. Sometimes I recycle canvases that my wife picks up at thrift stores and garage sales. Recently, my series of aspen trees was featured on the walls of the Pinewood Country Club in Munds Park, Arizona, where we have a summer home. In 2019 and 2021 I was awarded several ribbons at the Coconino County Fair, including one first place, two second place and one third place. This past summer I have proudly been commissioned to paint three pieces of fine art. 19 | Westbrook Village LIVING January 2023

MARATHON MAN Tim Corcoran "The marathon never ceases to be a race of joy, a race of wonder." – Hal Higdon, running writer and coach Above: Tim ran on the Great Wall of China for part of the marathon in 2019 “Like many, I ran in high school and college, and then did not continue once I married and began raising a family in South Bend, Indiana,” Tim Corcoran says, remembering his early years. He explains how it changed: “At the age of 45 Tim and Sharon enjoyed Beijing where Tim ran an interesting marathon I started running to stay fit, and friends encouraged me to follow them to a marathon class. I started training, and never looked back.” The 1991 Chicago Marathon was his first, and after he overheard the phrase, “to run a marathon in each of the 50 states,” he was challenged to do just that. Thus began a lifelong quest to achieve what seemed like the impossible at the time. By 2009, Tim found he had his 50th state marathon looming in Colorado. With some hurdles in the way, he was doubtful of making that particular race. “My family and friends rallied around me and joined me at the race, running part of the way with me—it was a huge and meaningful highlight for me, and I am so grateful to have reached the goal with that wonderful support.” Tim also accepted the challenge: to run a marathon on every continent. “I am a very goal-oriented person, and it seemed like a worthy goal.” In 1995 he ran a marathon on King George Island in Antarctica. “It was 35 degrees, so comfortable for running,” he recalls. Tim continued toward the goal, running in Rio de Janeiro Tim completed his South American marathon in and Athens, Greece, the site of the original marathon. Rio de Janeiro in 2014 In 2019, Tim and his wife, Sharon, found themselves in Beijing, where Tim ran a marathon that trekked across flat terrain and also on the Great Wall. “The Great Wall has an uneven surface, which added difficulty to the race,” says Tim. “But it made it interesting because the culture there is so different and exotic.” During the pandemic, Tim transitioned into hiking along the trails in this great state, including the 800-mile Arizona Trail, which he is completed in segments. He also continued to run nearby including to Thunderbird Mountain and back while training. “Westbrook Village is an ideal place to run for longer stretches –there are plenty of roads and paths to get the miles in,” boasts Tim. At age 78, Tim has his sights on an African marathon, which will complete his 7-continent goal. Sharon, Tim’s wife of 10 years, loves traveling with him and is also active with the Desert Dancers and in their local church. The couple is happy to call Westbrook Village home! Happy training, Tim! Westbrook Village cheers you on! In 2018, Athens Greece served as classic backdrop for Tim's European continent race 21 | Westbrook Village LIVING January 2023

Westbrook Village Couple Celebrated Their 70th Wedding Anniversary!! Robert and Lynn Merkle were married on the December 27, 1952 at the ABM Catholic Church in Ashkum, Illinois. At that time Bob was in Basic Flight Training at San Marcos Air Force Base near Austin, Texas. It was "touch and go" for him to get leave time for the wedding. He arrived the day before the ceremony and departed with his bride back to Texas two days later. After Bob’s release from active duty and reassignment to the active reserves, they returned to operate the family farm. They spent the next 40 years tilling the soil, and Bob also flew the skies as a corporate pilot. In 1997, after retiring from active farm participation and the pushing of throttles, the Merkle’s purchased a casita in Westbrook Village and have been enjoying life at one of the best of retirement villages that ever was. At the end of December, family and friends gathered at a beautiful event in honor and celebration of the last 70 years of marital bliss!
