Speaker Bios Ann Borders, MD, MSc, MPH Executive Director and Obstetric Lead, Illinois Perinatal Quality Collaborative; Clinical Associate Professor Maternal Fetal Medicine, NorthShore University HealthSystem Dr. Borders joined the NorthShore University Health System Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine at Evanston Hospital in 2012 and is a Clinical Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine. Dr. Borders received an MSc degree in health policy from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, and an MD from Harvard Medical School in 1999. She completed a Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship and a NRSA Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Health Services Research at Northwestern University in 2006. In 2007, she completed an MPH degree at Northwestern University. She is the Executive Director and Obstetric Lead for the Illinois Perinatal Quality Collaborative, a collaborative of over 100 birthing hospitals focused on improving outcomes for mothers and newborns. She is a member of the ACOG Committee on Obstetric Practice. She also serves on the National Network of Perinatal Quality Collaboratives Executive Committee. Mona Prasad, DO, MPH Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialist Assistant Medical Director, Perinatal Services, Grant Medical Center, OhioHealth, Neonatal Project Clinician, Ohio Perinatal Quality Collaborative, Columbus Ohio Dr. Prasad is a maternal fetal medicine specialist who recently became the Director of Perinatal Services at Grant Medical Center in the OhioHealth System in Columbus, Ohio, after 17 years of training and early practice at the Ohio State University. Her early academic interest in mother to child transmission of Hepatitis C Virus quickly opened her eyes to the care required by women with opiate use disorder, and the lack of services easily available. She became certified to prescribe MAT in 2010, which allowed her to provide both OB and addiction care to more than 700 pregnant women during her tenure at the Ohio State University. She became board certified in addiction medicine in 2018. She has been active with the Ohio Perinatal Quality Collabroative since 2014, where she began as a clinical expert for their NAS work. She is I2S2 trained at Cincinnati Children's Hospital, and this training has made her impactful as a leader of the Ohio Medicaid MOMS proejct. Leslie Caldarelli, MD Neonatal Lead, Illinois Perinatal Quality Collaborative and Medical Director, NICU, Northwestern Medicine's Prentice Women's Hospital; Associate Professor of Pediatrics-Neonatology, Northwestern University Feinburg School of Medicine, Chicago Dr. Caldarelli is a practicing neonatologist at Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago and Prentice Women’s Hospital-Northwestern Medicine. She serves as the Medical Director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Prentice Women’s Hospital. She is a co-Neonatal lead for the Illinois Perinatal Quality Collaborative. Dr Caldarelli also has a longstanding medical educational track record at the undergraduate and graduate levels; including leadership, teaching, simulation, and curricula development. Terri Deeds, RN, MSN, NE-BC Clinical Lead, California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative, Stanford University, School of Medicine, Aliso Viejo, California Ms. Deeds currently serves as a Clinical Lead for the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative associated with Stanford University. She is a nurse leader with 40 years of experience in health care. She originally graduated as a Diploma Nurse from St. Luke's Methodist Hospital School of Nursing and Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She received her bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing Administration from the University of Texas in Arlington. ALl of her nursing background has been in the area of Women's and Children's services, with the majority of her career spent in a nursing leadership capacity. Her passion has always been in the area of performance improvement and the importance of using data to drive QI. Her professional career lead her to nursing opportunities in Iowa, Texas, and California. Most recently Ms. Deeds spent the past 27 years as a Director of Women's and Children's Services in South Orange County, California. She joined the CMQCC team in January when presented with an opportunity to expand her scope to improving health care to women throughout the state of California. Ms. Deeds currently lives in Orange County, California with her husband and daughter. Krisanna Deppen, MD Associate Director, Grant Family Medical Residency, OhioHealth, Ohio Perinatal Quality Collaborative, Columbus, Ohio Dr. Krisanna Deppen is board certified in Family Medicine and Addiction Medicine. After graduating from Northeast Ohio Medical University, she completed her family medicine residency at Grant Medcical Center in Columbus, Ohio. She completed an Addiction Medicine Fellowship at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle Washington where her passion for caring for pregnant women with substance use disorder begann. She works at OhioHealth-Grant Medical Center working with the family medicine residency and soon to be program director of an addiction medicine fellowship.
Speaker Bios Eve Espey, MD, MPH Chairperson, New Mexico Perinatal and Neonatal Collaborative, Department of OB/GYN, Professor, Department of OB/GYN, Family Plnning, Family Planning Fellowship Director, University of New Mexico School of Medicine, NM Dr. Espey is Professor and Chair of the Department of Ob/Gyn and Family Planning fellowship Director at the University of New Mexico. She is immediate past President of the Society of Family Planning and is the Medical Advisory Committee Chair for the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy. Additionally, she is Chair of the American College of OB-GYN Work Group on Long Acting Reversible Contraception and has participated in international family planning consulting. As President of the New Mexico Perinatal Collaborative and Chair of the Department of OB-GYN, Dr. Espey is dedicated to improving access to women’s healthcare in New Mexico. She has led projects in reducing maternal mortality from obstetric hemorrhage and implementing immediate postpartum LARC in hospitals throughout the state. She works with medical students, residents, fellows, midwives, nurse practitioners and pharmacists as a colleague and as an educator. She has numerous publications in contraception, abortion and medical education and has presented locally, regionally and nationally on these topicseducator. She has numerous publications in contraception, abortion and medical education and has presented locally, regionally and nationally on these topics Victoria Flanagan, RN, MSN Perinatal Outreach Educator and Director of Operations, Northern New England Perinatal Quality Improvement Network, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon, New Hampshire Ms Flanagan is the Perinatal Outreach Educator for the Regional Program for Women's and Children's Health at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH. She performs case reviews and provides educational support to nurses, physicians, and other providers who care for pregnant women and newborns throughout Northern New England. SHe is currently the co-investigator for the Prenatal Care of Women with Substance Use Disorders Project and Optimizing Care for Newborns with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome. In addition, Ms. Flanagan serves on the New Hampshire's Governor's Task Force on Substance Abuse in Pregnancy and the Maternal Mortality & Infant Death Review Committees. She is also the Director of Operations for the Northern New England Perinatal Quality Improvement Network. Founded in 2003, NNEPQIN is a voluntary consortium of 40+ organizations in Vermont, Nehampshire, and Maine involved in perinatal care. Nora Harms-Pavelski, MSW Deputy Director, Child Protection, Illinois Department of Children & Family Services, Bloomington, Illinois Ms. Harms-Pavelski holds a Bachelor degree in Psychology-Mental Health Worker Program and a Masters of Social Work degree both from the University of Illinois. She began her career with DCFS in 1995 as a placement/intact caseworker and has served as a Supervisor, Site Manager, Intact Manager, and Assistant Regional Administrator within the Department. From 2012-2015 she held the position of Administrator for the State Central Register (SCR) and oversaw the child abuse and neglect hotline as part of those duties. In Jule 2015, she was apointed as the Deputy Director for Child Proection and now has oversite for all Child Protection, SCR, and Intact services across the state of Illinois. Justin Josephsen, MD Neonatal Lead, Illinois Perinatal Quality Collaborative, Cardinal Glennon, Neonatologist and Assistant Professor, Pediatrics, St. Louis University, St. Louis, Missouri Dr. Josephsen is a neonatologist and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Saint Louis University. He is a co-Neonatal lead for the Illinois Perinatal Quality Collaborative. . He also serves as the physician champion of the Golden Hour Project at St. Mary’s Hospital in St. Louis, which serves high-risk infants and mothers in the Southern Illinois region. His research interests include delivery room interventions to improve neonatal outcomes.
Speaker Bios Nirav Shah, MD, JD Director, Illinois Department of Public Health Director Shah was appointed Director of the Illinois Department of Public Health in January 2015 after dedicating his career to improving access to quality health care. As an attorney and former public health economist for the Cambodian Ministry of Health, he has advised professionals around the nation and world about cost-effective interventions and reducing inefficiencies in health systems. Director Shah received both his medical and law degrees from the University of Chicago and worked at the national law firm Sidley Austin, where he focused on the administrative and legal aspects of public health. Kristen Tulo Patient/Family Advisor Ms. Tulo is a 31-year-old full time employee, a student, a friend to many, a mother to four, a fiancé to one and a recovering addict. She grew up in Chicago in Rogers Park and spent most of her life in that neighborhood up until about a year ago. She settled down with her family in Rockford Il. She has a six-year-old daughter, a four-year-old son, a one-year-old son, a five-year-old step son, and an amazing fiancé. She have been clean for almost 8 years, and currently work in business development in the automotive industry as well as attend school for radiology. She has a passion for crafts of all sorts and in her spare time she sells them at local fairs. She also spends a great portion of her free time attending and speaking at group meetings. These speaking opportunities not only help her, but also help others in recovery. In October 2014, Kristen spoke at the Vermont Oxford Network’s symposium on her experience of being a mother to premature babies as well as being mother in recovery. She continues to utilize any opportunity to share her experience and knowledge in hopes of helping those in active addiction, in recovery, the families and medical professionals. Zsakeba Henderson, MD Medical Officer, Perinatal Quality Collaboratives Program Lead, Division of Reproductive Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, GA Dr. Henderson is a Medical Officer in the Maternal and Infant Health Branch in the Division of Reproductive Health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She is a board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist and leads the Division's activities in support of state-based perinatal quality collaboratives (PQCs), which currently provides support to 13 state PQCs and the National Network of Perinatal Quality Collaboratives. In this position she also provides clinical input into the research agenda for the Maternal and Infant Health Branch, including activities in preterm birth and pregnancy- related morbidity and mortality. Dr. Henderson received her BS degree in biochemistry from Oakwood University in Huntsville, Alabama, and her medical degree from Harvard Medical School in Boston. She then completed her internship and residency at Brigham and Women's Hospital/Massachusetts General Hospital Integrated Residency Program in OB/GYN. Breakout Speaker Bios Terry Griffin, MS, APN, NNP-BC ILPQC Leadership Team, Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, St. Alexius Medical Center Ms. Griffin has been in the NICU for many decades as a staff nurse, clinical nurse specialist and now as a neonatal nurse practitioner. She has held faculty positions in the Graduate College of Nursing at the University of Illinois at Chicago and serves as faculty and consultant for the Institute for Patient and Family Centered Care. She has numerous publications on partnering with families. She also serves on the ILPQC Leadership Team.
Celebrating 10 Years of Neonatal QI in Illinois ILPQC is celebrating 10 years of Neonatal Quality Improvement Collaboration in Illinois! Timeline of Key Milestones for Neonatal QI in Illinois include: • 2008 - Illinois Area Perinatal Collaborative (IAPC) formed with support from the IDPH Regionalized Perinatal System and all NICU Directors and perinatal nurses in Illinois • 2009 –Very Low Birthweight Infant Hypothermia in the Delivery Room Initiative and collaboration with other state perinatal quality leaders at Vermont Oxford Network (VON) conference • 2010 – 2012 - Changed name to Perinatal Quality Collaborative of Illinois (PQCI) and launched the Central Line Associated Bloodstream Infection (CLABSI) Initiative in collaboration with Perinatal Quality Collaborative of North Carolina (PQCNC) achieving 75% reduction in CLABSI overall • 2012 - Illinois CHIPRA Quality Demonstration Grant and March of Dimes brought PQCI together with obstetric QI leadership to form the Illinois Perinatal Quality Collaborative (ILPQC) to form a statewide quality collaborative to support hospitals working together on both obstetric and neonatal quality improvement initiatives • 2014– Launched the Very Low Birthweight (VLBW) Neonatal Nutrition Initiative participating hospitals and reduced to below 40% the percentage of VLBW infants discharged from the NICU with weight
