After months of campaigning
and sharing their platforms for
improvement with their respective
communities, the primary elections
have been completed. There were
two seats each available for the local

move on to compete in November's
general election. Congratulations!
While voting percentage was way
under par for registered voters, with
voting participation in Cedar City
around 25% and Parowan just under
45%, it is still great to see the Iron
County community come together
to elect leaders that will help our
communities continue to improve
and move forward.
For the Cedar City Council,
Incumbent R. Scott Phillips garnered
the most votes, followed by Ronald
Riddle who climbed into the second
spot with an estimated 500 votes
advantage.

medical and nutritional costs—which
can be quite expensive. Through this
fun fundraiser, the Friends can help
pay for that care. “We want them to

country reprioritize fiscal responsibility. And

Obama and Trump, and now under President
Biden, I always advocated for more responsible
spending. Sadly, despite the warning signs, we
continue to recklessly spend taxpayer money.
This behavior will not just burden our children

either. This problem is immediate, and the bill

Children’s Music Theater heads over the rainbow to Land of Oz
by Corey Baumgartner
Iron Count y Today
Come join your familiar favorite characters at this
year’s production of the Wizard of Oz performed by the
Cedar City Children’s Music Theater. Join Scarecrow,
Tin Man, Cowardly Lion, Dorothy and her little dog too
as they head over the rainbow to ask the wizard for
a brain, a heart, courage and find a way home. Don’t
forget about the Glinda the Good Witch, the Wicked
Witch of the West and the wonderful Wizard himself.
With a cast of 206 children, this play promises to be a
magical adventure!
COVID halted production last year by making sure
there was no place like home and often nowhere else to
go but home, but this year it is great to have the CCCMT
back performing in the Heritage Center! And there will
also be exciting new things to entertain the audience.
There will be lots of fun effects including pyrotechnics,
movie projections, flying and of course great acting by
the children in our community. And don’t worry, the
ruby slippers will help return you safely back home.
The Wizard of Oz will begin on August 26th and run
(or skip merrily) through each night (except Sunday the
29th) until the final performance on August 31st. Tickets
are $10 (General seating) and $15 (Reserved seating)
and they are going as fast as a flying monkey! Buy your
tickets online at: www.cccmt.org.
All performance will be at 7pm in the Heritage
Center (105 N 100 E, Cedar City). They are following
the guidance of the CDC and Government officials to
ensure a safe environment for the patrons and actors.
As such, facemasks that cover both the nose and mouth
are required for everyone in attendance. Hand sanitizing
stations will also be available. corey baumgartner

Lantern Festival
Event provides uplifting lights for community after floods
by Corey Baumgartner
Iron Count y Today
Last Saturday evening in Cedar City,
near the mystical land of Kumandra,
hundreds of small bright lights made
their way slowly across the Lake at the
Hills. Some of the floating lanterns had
words of encouragement written on
them. With or without words, each was
a wish, a prayer, or just a magical thing
to do on a beautiful summer’s evening.
After the launching of the lanterns, the
movie Raya and the Last Dragon was
shown in the parking lot near the lake.
The event helped uplift and bring
the community together in a positive #cedarcitytogether and help spread the
way after the challenges with the recent word about unity in our community.
