It all began with Rubesco, the iconic label of the Cantine Lungarotti winery, whose name derives from the
Latin “rubescere”, to blush. Since then, by roughly calculating the number of bottles produced and average
consumption, our Rubesco has brought a blush to 120 million wine lovers, twice the population of Italy and
20 thousand times that of Torgiano, its birthplace, located in the province of Perugia.

Today the Umbrian group, guided by Chiara Lungarotti (C.E.O.) and her sister Teresa Severini, produces 2.4
million bottles annually of 25 different wines exported to 50 countries worldwide from 250 hectares of
vineyards (between the Torgiano estate and the more recent one in Montefalco). In 2013 Lungarotti's wine
“assets” reached an overall turnover of over 11 million Euros. Exports also grew, with an average growth in
turnover of more than 70% in Japan and Russia.
These numbers have established Cantine Lungarotti as a true testimonial for the Umbrian land because of
their integrated promotional system, of which they were forerunners, and its complete production cycle, from the
agricultural exploitation (olive oil and balsamic condiment) but above all, unique cultural and tourist activities. A
case in point is the Lungarotti Foundation curated by the founder’s wife, Maria Grazia, who created the
Museo del Vino di Torgiano-MUVIT of Torgiano (Perugia), the “best in Italy” (New York Times, Ed., 2010),
which celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2014, and the Olive and Oil Museum-MOO. The museums are the
culmination of years of research on the millenium-old presence of these two products, the quintessence of the
Mediterranean. Hospitality is represented by Le Tre Vaselle – a luxury Resort with a unique Vinotherapy Spa –
and by the 12 independent apartments of Agriturismo Poggio alle Vigne.

Among the founding and innate values of the 120-strong Lungarotti team are the constant quest for quality,
combined with sustainability from the vineyards to the cellars, including projects for compensating and
reducing the C02 emissions produced.
Winner of the Bionergy Italy prize in 2011 for its best practices, Cantine Lungarotti has been adhering to the
agro-environmental measures of the European Union for the past 15 years, entailing the installation of 5
meteorological stations for climate monitoring and for measuring and thereby optimizing the vineyard’s quality
parameters.

Green consciousness in the winery. The biomass facility installed at the Torgiano winery provides total self-
sufficiency in the production of heat and hot water and a good level of self-sufficiency for refrigeration, with 720
MWh produced annually; consequently, the CO2 emissions saved come to 100 tons per year. For this project,
initiated in 2006, the Ministry of Agricultural Policy selected Lungarotti as the pilot winery at the European level
within the programme of the Biomass Research Institute. On the Montefalco front, the Lungarotti estate has
adopted organic farming. Thus, from the 2014 harvest Lungarotti’s Montefalco Sagrantino will be certified as
“organic”.

WINES OF LUNGAROTTI

The Lungarotti winery has its productive and historical headquarters in Torgiano where its iconic wines are
produced from the 230 hectares of vineyards owned by the family: the first of these is undoubtedly “Rubesco”
Rosso di Torgiano DOC which has been epitomizing Umbria’s winemaking excellence for more than 50 years.
Produced with Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Colorino grapes (in working progress is the blend of just Sangiovese
and Colorino, enhancing the wine's characteristics). Its ruby red colour evokes the origins of its name: Rubesco,
from the Latin verb “rubescere”, to blush. With its average annual production of 500,000 bottles, Rubesco is
Lungarotti’s most well known wine, with its unmistakable label that depicts a bas-relief of the harvest
represented on the Fontana Maggiore in Perugia, one of Italy’s most beautiful 13th–century monumental
fountains. From the DOC to the DOCG wine, with Rubesco Riserva, Vigna Monticchio Torgiano Rosso. A
wine that is enjoyed in 45 countries world-wide, this premium version of Rubesco undergoes an aging period of
about 5 years, with average production of 50,000 bottles. The 2007 vintage of the Riserva has reached third
place in Italy’s list of the top 100 red wines for 2013. The total score of 470 calculated by the algorithm of
Gentleman magazine, a publication of “Milano Finanza”, for Vigna Monticchio Riserva is the result of Gambero
Rosso’s 3 glasses, Duemilavini’s 5 grape bunches, Maroni’s 96/100 points, Veronelli’s 94/100 points and
L’Espresso’s 17/20 points. By averaging this placement with the second place standing in Gentleman’s list of
2011, this Umbrian DOCG wine can therefore be considered the second-best Italian red wine of the past two-
year period. A MUVIT EDITION of this wine, with a limited number of bottles, will bear a special label
celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Wine Museum.
Another historic Lungarotti wine hails from the Torgiano estate: the white Torre di Giano, Umbria Bianco IGT
(40% Vermentino, 35% Trebbiano and 25% Grechetto). With 300,000 bottles (average annual production) Torre
di Giano IGT is fresh and fruity, produced exclusively with free-run juice in stainless steel. But Lungarotti was
also one of the pioneers of barrique-aged whites and as early as the 1970’s has been producing its Torre di
Giano Vigna Il Pino, Bianco di Torgiano DOC (70% Trebbiano and 30% Grechetto; 20,000 bottles annually).
Developed for a young market and for all seasons, Brezza (Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and Grechetto) is a fresh
and easy-to-enjoy wine which has spurred the creation of Brezza lifestyle, a line that includes a white, rosé
and red wine, the company’s reponse to the need for moderate-alcohol wines and responsible enjoyment: the
fruit of many years' research at the winery.
The latest entry at Lungarotti, after the success of Brut Millesimato, is the Brut Rosé: from the 2012 harvest,
Sangiovese and Pinot Grigio grapes from the Torgiano Estate, particularly suitable for producing a joyful,
pleasantly balanced wine that is very contemporary.

In Montefalco, headquarters of the Lungarotti’s other winery, are 20 hectares of vineyards represented by the
iconic wine of both the company and the Umbria region: Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG, a wine with great
character and noteworthy drinkability. Produced exclusively with Sagrantino grapes, one of Umbria’s oldest
native varietals. There is also a “passito” version, Sagrantino di Montefalco Passito; recently the Torgiano
winery released the first vintage of the passito wine Vin Santo Torgiano DOC.
Lungarotti’s labels can be found on the winelists of the world’s best dining establishments: from Armani and
Bulgari restaurants in Tokyo, to the Grand Hotel Moscow, Sheraton and Four Seasons hotels in Bangkok to
name just a few of Lungarotti’s prestigious restaurant accounts.

NOT ONLY WINE
Olive Oil. With its 12 hectares of olive groves, Lungarotti produces 15,000 bottles of Dop Umbria Colli Martani
Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Balsamic Grape Condiment. Each year 2,000 cruets are produced in the balsamic condiment cellar in
Torgiano. A gourmet product originating from white grape must (Trebbiano and Grechetto) aged more than 10
years according to the traditional method for balsamic vinegar. Its grape must origin differentiates it from the
traditional condiments based on wine vinegar.
Grappa’s. Grappa di Sagrantino, barrique aged and Grappa Rubesco, a young grappa.

CULTURE: LUNGAROTTI FOUNDATION
The cultural fulcrum of the Lungarotti group is the Lungarotti Foundation, a non-profit organization created
in 1987 by Giorgio and Maria Grazia Lungarotti that for more than 25 years has been at the centre of promoting
the arts, knowledge and craftsmanship.
Directed by Maria Grazia Marchetti Lungarotti, art historian and archivist, the Foundation boasts a busy agenda
of conferences, meetings and theme-based workshops and is involved in various publications, which have
received prestigious international awards, such as the one from the “Office International de la Vigne et du Vin”
in Paris (OIV) for the collection of essays entitled: “Wine, between myth and culture”
Among its activities is also the management of Lungarotti’s two major exhibition spaces in Torgiano, the Wine
Museum and the Olive and Oil Museum.

With a collection of more than 3,000 works, the Museo del Vino di Torgiano (MUVIT) tells the story of
viticulture in the Mediterranean in an unprecedented manner. Reviewed as the “best in Italy” by the New York
Times (2010), the Museum is a journey over five thousand years through collections of wine vessels, cups,
jugs, amphoras, a noteworthy collection of ceramics, as well as ethnographic collections. The Museum
headquarters located in Palazzo Graziani-Baglioni also house one of the largest collections in Europe of
engravings on a Bacchic theme, among which is an inebriating Bacchanalia by Pablo Picasso (1959), and of
wafer irons. The museum also displays vinification equipment, including is the monumental press described by
Caton and used in the Umbrian countryside until just a few decades ago. Opened to the public in 1974, the
Museum celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2014 with a year of special events and initiatives, as well as a
MUVIT EDITION wine label dedicated to one of its iconic pieces, the Plate with Satyr by Jean Cocteau, enamel
on terracotta, Paris, 1958.

The 600-plus pieces on display at the Museo dell’Olivo e dell’Olio (MOO) are symbols of Mediterranean
culture. A precious product that has also been defined as “green gold” and a constant presence in the history of
man from antiquity to today: from medicine to commerce, from the worship of gods to cosmetology which in the
17th century considered it as the major ingredient in the recipe for the elixir of long life. Among the works on
display: millstones, containers, cruets and an extraordinary collection of oil lamps that demonstrate oil’s original
use as a source of light. In addition, notebooks, sketches, travel kits and watercolour paintings from the
accounts of intellectuals travelling on the Grand tour, who were fascinated by the landscapes of olive groves
and vineyards found in this part of Italy.

HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM

Hospitality and tourism complete the activities of the Lungarotti Group, one of the first Italian companies to
practice a system of integrated promotion of their local area. It has developed a veritable “network of
excellence” encompassing the elements of the “Umbria” brand: from wine to culture, from nature to rural
settings and finally, tourist facilities.
Le Tre Vaselle (Torgiano – PG) This is the 5-star Wine Resort (52 rooms) nestled within the town walls of
Torgiano, a medieval town between Perugia and Assisi and among the first in Italy to practise Vinotherapy in its
bellaUve Spa. The rituals and vinotherapy treatments practised in the holistic well-being Spa (anti-oxidant, anti-
aging, purifying, nourishing, toning and relaxing) are based on the active principles of grapes and inspired by
the “Secreta”, the antique beauty recipes on display in the Wine Museum. The restaurant, Le Melograne,
awarded “restaurant of the year 2013” by Bibenda (Sommelier’s Guide), features local ingredients from the
Lungarotti farms enhanced by the creative reinterpretations of 30-year old chef, Ciro D’Amico.
At “Le Tre Vaselle” Resort, hospitality becomes an experience, with Food & Art Italian Experience, the culinary
arts courses held by Alma, International School of Italian Cuisine for lovers of wine and gourmet foods.

Agriturismo Poggio alle Vigne (Torgiano-PG). Twelve independent apartments distributed in three Umbrian
homesteads with swimming pool (Il Poggio, Il Pometo, Il Poggiolo) immersed among the Rubesco vineyards for
a vacation based on relaxation and in touch with nature.

PEOPLE
C.E.O. of all the production activities that form the company is Chiara Lungarotti, a degree in viticulture from
the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Perugia, courses in Enology at Bordeaux and a career rising from
the ranks at a very early age. If she were to have her own motto, this would be: maintaining, continuing,
expanding, because her great respect for tradition is associated with the desire to experiment with innovative
techniques and models for development. In addition to her company responsibilities, she is a councilor at
Federvini, an Academic of the Accademia dei Georgofili and of the Accademia Italiana della Vite e del Vino and
Past President of MTV Movimento Turismo del Vino. Her many commitments often keep her travelling the world
but she does her utmost to dedicate her free time to her son, Giovanni, born in 2007.

Daughter of Maria Grazia and her first husband, Teresa Severini is one of Italy’s first woman winemakers. She
obtained her degree in enology at the University of Perugia and then a specialization at the Institut d’Oenologie
of the Université de Bordeaux. In 1979 she began her career in the company, with a management role since
1992, adding to her technical know-how also the sectors of communications and marketing. She is to be
credited with wines such as Brezza and Aurente but is also one of the founding members of “Donne del Vino”
and one of the first women admitted to the Académie International du Vin in Geneva in 1981. She is an
academic of the Accademia Italiana della Vite e del vino, for nine years was regional President of the
Associazione Imprenditrici e Donne Dirigenti d’Azienda (AIDDA). President of Consorzio di Tutela dei vini di
Torgiano and of Fondazione POST (Museum of Science and Technology) in Perugia. Active on numerous
fronts, she has recently discovered a passion for writing books on wine education and goes to the greatest
lengths to care for her family. She has three children: Francesco, Gemma and Giuditta.

Maria Grazia Marchetti Lungarotti, together with her husband, Giorgio, and decades before the trends, has
created a unique system between viticulture, winemaking and the cultural and artistic world, narrating wine as a
cultural lode. Her education as art historian and archivist has given her the tools for planning and creating “her”
Foundation and the two museums. For ten years she was a member of the Italian branch of the International
Council of Museums (ICOM) and a pivotal figure in the field of museography and museology in Italy. Untiring in
promoting culture in Italy, in 1995 she was awarded the title of Benemerito della cultura e dell’arte for her
activities in favour of Culture and in 2010 received the Premio Bellisario for her contribution to promoting some
of Italy's products of excellence; recently she was also granted the most prestigious honour of Cavaliere di Gran
Croce dell’Ordine al Merito della Repubblica.
