Statement Stairs!
At BuildHer we believe the entry to the home is incredibly important.
Referring back to the ‘welcoming’ space that Rebeka was trying to
create, the entrance was intended to be a place where you stepped into
an inner sanctuary. A place where family and friends could arrive and feel
immediately at home.
The brick entrance opens up in this area to reveal the whole house. If you
look through the garden you can see straight through the foyer windows
across all the living areas. We love the way this entrance feels and that
the mud room, garage and powder are concealed behind full height
panelling, beautiful walnut full height panelling!

Mud & Powder!
It’s a practical thing - the mud room. For their large family it really works,
and they’ve been an adopter of this space for quite some time. With a
pile of children it’s a great space for them to put all of their ‘stuff’ away
when they come home from school, kinder and creche.
When they manage to put their shoes and jackets away (dreams are free
right?) then it’s such a breeze to find them again on the way out.

ENTERTAIN
Formal Lounge!
With 6 children living at home, a separate/formal lounge was a must for
this home. A clearly defined place where adults could talk when guests
come around and the kids are playing was deemed of high importance.
This is not a place for TV (although provision was left) but rather a place
for reading, entertaining conversation by the fire and drinks at the bar.
The detail for the joinery was taken from a cabinet that Rebeka really
loved, allowing the shelves to read as floating but have the structural
support to be able to hold books and a small pile of plants.

Dining Delight!
Now who does not love a custom dining room table?
With a curved wall behind them, positioning a rectangle or square table
would have been a challenge, so instead they created a rounded
tripiziod type of table with a lovely piece of marble that they sourced
from Signorino Tile Gallery (one of their favourite stone suppliers)!
This large table allows them to seat 9 (8 in the family + one girlfriend)
and then have space to add additional seating if anyone wants to come
over and join in on the fun!

LIGHTS, AND THE RIGHT LIGHTS
Lighting is one of the most important considerations. We all use them and when the sun goes down, well then we need them to light up our
homes don’t we? If Rebeka is truthful and actually confesses, then she may tell you it was for her, too often, an afterthought. Some nice
downlights and a feature here and there and we had a Lighting Plan. That was of course until she met Danielle from Lights, Lights, Lights
and then (Hold the Phone and Stop the Press), she was en’LIGHTENED’ - see what we did there?!
Lighting is an intricate and tricky beast filled with types of lighting, colours, brightness and styles and when the penny drops, you will never
be able to go back. With full faith, Rebeka handed over her floorplan to Danielle (or a marked up version which somewhat resembled what
they wanted to build) so that she could work her magic. So knowledgeable and passionate about lighting, Danielle is a master!
One of their primary rules had been to “stop the glare” - the glare caused by downlights reflecting off surfaces! The temptation is often to
grid out the ceiling with many, many downlights which light the space. But, as they discovered in their Bayview project, the more efficient
and often more elegant solution is to reflect light from the walls to the ceiling, washing the room with consistent light.
They clearly have drunk that cool-aid! The quality of the light fitting, lux and lumens is also something that Danielle and the team at Lights
Lights Lights really invest in, as this will change your experience of a space. Think major retailers for bright blue lights aimed at waking up
your senses and getting you into a heightened buying mode and by contrast, the intimacy of a luxury hotel using ambient and localised
lighting to make you feel warm, invited and comfortable!
We encourage you to rethink your Lighting Plan and use this as an opportunity to really elevate your space. The difference between a good
Lighting Plan and a bad one - chalk and cheese OR $$$ when you’re selling! Go the lights and get the WOW factor.

Kitchen Dream!
Everyone knows the kitchen is the heart of the home, but did you know
you should start with this space in mind as the balance of timbers, stones
and other materials are best made here. Starting with the lovely tile base
a warm walnut tone was a natural fit, along with Cosentio’s Tahj Mahal
benchtop which is virtually indestructible (a requirement when you have
so many unruly/lively children and a propensity to burn everyday meals -
Rebeka’s words FYI)!
As you would expect, they chose wonderful high end appliances from
Designer Appliances, complete with two ovens, one of which Rebeka
burn out before the first week of living there was even over! They
enlisted the help of Rachel, from Co. Kitchens, to draw up the joinery
and work through the finishes with them.
Rebeka & John always say that talking about and testing their ideas with
people equally as passionate about building is important. The tiles in the
butlers pantry were added as a lovely detail and the green tone within the
cabinets and in the butlers pantry was a favourite colour suggested by
Rachel of Co. Kitchens.

The Bedrooms!
When these bedrooms were planned, which are all located together on
the first floor, we think the architects (and/or Rebeka and John) were
channeling a little Goldilocks. They’re not too big, they’re not too small -
they’re just right!
Bedrooms are for sleeping (mostly) in this household, so these ones are
well thought out, and not super massive. Incorporating built-in storage in
every one, they are totally functional for this family. With plenty of room
for the children downstairs to play and be around mum and dad, the
quiet of the upstairs becomes a sleeping sanctuary, especially when they
jump into mum and dad’s massive big bed in the master suite!
The one spectacular feature we have to mention, the circular window in
front bedroom of the house. This is the one you see from the driveway
and wow - what a beautiful statement it is, and thoroughly in keeping
with the other circular features throughout the home.

WASHY
Upstairs Laundry!
Ok some might say this laundry is slightly controversial - it’s upstairs
if you hadn’t already noticed! But just like Stephanie O’Sullivan from
Ireland (you can read about her in the new book Rebeka and Kribashini
wrote called “BUILDHER”), Rebeka felt that the best place to put her
laundry was upstairs - where all of the bedrooms were and therefore all
of the dirty clothes!
Did she really need to be carrying baskets full of washing up and down
the stairs, well no. One of the things that BuildHer teach you before you
build is to really explore how you and your family live in a home before
you build it. This room is all about functionality - in it’s placement, in the
cupboards and drawers in which to store dirty washing and the beautiful
big bench where you can fold it all back up and then return it to the
appropriate bedroom - located only steps away!

Family Bathroom!
Hello gorgeous bathroom - a show-stopping stunner if ever there was
one! The key to success here, as described by Rebeka and John, are not
too many choices for materials (only 2 tiles throughout) and ones that
work beautifully together, not only aesthetically, but functionally.
With many children under her belt, Rebeka knows that a built-in bath is
a practical (yet still stylish) way to go. No bending down to clean behind
a stand-alone bath for her - nope! The continuation of walnut joinery,
shaving cabinets with mirros and shelves, provides enough storage for the
whole family - which is lucky as it’s the family bathroom.

cross purpose. This is all achieved by storage and joinery. They
used Grandview Kitchens for all of it throughout the house and
Rebeka will tell you that she was very pleased with both their
service and professionalism. It really was a calm and smooth
job. They actually booked a date 6 weeks in advance and arrived
on that day - what a joy!

DREAM
The Master!
When dreaming and designing this master suite, we think that Rebeka
and John incorporated all of the best features from their previous
projects combined and the resulting space is beautiful and cozy.
The cabinetry again makes its walnut statement with the lovely
headboard and shelf behind the bed, bedside drawers, walk-in robe
storage off to the side and storage in the ensuite.
Easily fitting in the massive king size bed (there is plenty of room for the
kids to come and snuggle) and with plenty of space still around, the flow
works perfectly and the ensuite - just a little bit of heaven if you ever
manage to get 5 minutes in there by yourself without a child chasing you
down. Some slightly different floor and wall tile choices create a light and
bright ensuite with plenty of natural light looking out onto the enclosed
inner courtyard and massive palm tree thanks to the lovely neighbours.

TAPPED IN! ER

Beautiful tapware is now an absolute must in
UT
homes built or renovated today - and there is so
much great stuff out there!
Actually, we find that tapware and benchtops to be the things
that people seem to get most connected to, and we know why!
These are the tactile things that we will be touching and feeling
all the time. When we reach a lovely surface we want to run our
hands over it, and its is the same for the tapware.
Now, did you know that ABI Interiors was designed and
imported by builders who were having issues with lead times
and quality? So, like the entrepreneurial family (yes, this is also
a family owned and run business) that they are, they set out
to solve the problem and the supply chain, and 5 or so short
years later the quality speaks for itself. Now they have three
warehouses of stock AND they are branching out into other
areas!
HOT TIP... If you’re a BuildHer don’t forget your special
discount - they’re in our Little Black Book!

Garden Courtyard!
It really is the perfect word to describe this garden. Hidden down a
driveway, you would never know there was this quiet and lush (and
getting more lush by the minute) garden.
Seeing it today, the plantings now having taken hold and growing into
the framework, you almost wouldn’t recognise it. There’s still some work
to be done on half of the garden, but the ideas are sparking for Rebeka,
especially now that she’s taken on more study to learn about landscape
design and plants via Melbourne University’s Burnley Campus. Seeing
it as a complementary skill to building, combine the two together and
watch out world!
Taking joy in the garden is so accessible to most people. Seeing it change
and grow, live and breathe through the seasons. Add in unexpected
hard-scaping elements like a round porthold entrance and you’ve got
yourself a wonderland.

Let me share a lovely lockdown story with you…. SHOU
ER
SUPPLI
TO
It was the story of a mudpit, a mudpit that over
UT
time became the lovely Inner North Garden
Oasis it deserved to be! Like many lockdown
gardens, it was the only thing to keep the men and
children outside and entertained while Covid was kept at bay.
And I can tell you that Rebeka was not unhappy at the use of
time.
Gardens have come to mean so much to us, they really
complete the house and home and we believe a properly
designed and developed garden can add a lot to the look and
feel, but also the value of your home!
Rebeka has been investing in learning more about gardens and
landscapes and how we can bring them to life, as now more
than ever they are required as an escape and a functioning area
to be in. Our gardens, like our homes are being asked to be
many things to many people. A cricket pitch, a place to think, a
sand pit, an exercise yard, a nice view...
Creating great spaces from inside to outside is important, and
we think on this home the landscape design by Plume Studio
has really created a space that amplifies the internal spaces.
