discussed and information will be shared as it is

6Pieces of Stained Glass by Ruth Steinbrunner
May the New Year find you happier and healthy as
we leave the challenges of 2020. Of course that
doesn’t mean we are not maintaining physical dis-
tancing and face masks for the next few months, but
a vaccine is on the way. Stained Glass Club looks
forward to offering classes again in March or April
and holding an in-person meeting in late April or
early May.
We continue to follow limits for persons in the
studio, but hope more members will take advantage
of the hours that are available to get back to
creating with colored glass. Studio hours are 9 AM
to noon Monday thru Saturday and on Tuesday
afternoons from 1PM to 3:30 PM. Afternoon hours
on Thursday have been discontinued because of
lack of use in November and December. As always,
it’s a good idea to call the ARC and check if the
studio is open when you want to come, as
sometimes monitors are unable to open.
Travel by Barb LeChaix
Happy New Year! Let’s hope that 2021 will be so much different than what we have experienced in 2020. It is a
year to remember! We would love to share travel plans for 2021; however, we know you understand that we
really do not know when to begin. In the meantime, stay safe, be extra careful, and take the vaccine as soon as
you are eligible. If you have ideas or any questions, contact Barb at (480-893-2658) bjlechaix@gmail.com.. or…

The only trip that is ready for 2021 is the postponed and rescheduled……Danube River Cruise with Prague—
May 6 - 16, 2021 (optional day prior or day after available) …… Our group of 61 is still planning that this trip will
be able to take place. Everyone has already paid in full for this trip. We expect to hear some news early in
January. Barb will be in contact with everyone as soon as she has some news. We are aware that everyone is
wondering and concerned. Contact Barb anytime and we can discuss your questions.
We are always thinking of trips. Some ideas are to reschedule the fun Barleen Dinner Show late fall, Cottonwood
wine country for a day trip, reschedule the Washington DC trip, the Eastern Canada experience, possibly a
Mississippi River Cruise, The MIM (Musical Instrument Museum) etc. I realize these are all dreams at this time,
but someday, this will happen. We need other ideas from you. Again, what we really need is the COVID-19
vaccine to be available for all of us.

Roots Genealogy by Dave Trombley
While researching their genealogy, Roots members discover great family stories that impacted our nation's
history. One Roots member was attempting to find more information on her 6th great grandfather and found a
great resource in a history of a North Carolina county. She found that he was transported as a convict in 1719
from England to Maryland and served about ten years in servitude. Thereafter he moved to Virginia where he
married and had at least eight children.
During the American Revolution, the family was loyal to England as his sons (then in their 40s) fought for the
English. Apparently unknown to one of his sons (a colonel), his wife supported the revolution. She sent three of
their children (ages about 6 to 21) across the English lines on clandestine missions. They gained access to
English encampments by bringing letters and food to their father. However, their real reason for the trips was to
gather information on the loyalist troop movements. The children then passed on their findings to the
revolutionary army. According to DAR records, this information assisted General Greene to locate Lord
Cornwallis' English troops. It was also reported that the oldest son road horseback with a message from
Greene to General George Washington.
The Roots Genealogy group meets on the third Thursday of each month currently in the Main Hall at 1 PM. The
January meeting will be on the 19th , but we can only seat 15 for a meeting, so current members will be given
priority.

An election for new officers was held at the December 1 gathering for Co-Presidents Betsy Mathison and Ruth
Philliben, Co-Vice Presidents Nancy Askin and Terry Lopez, Secretary Sylvia Holt and Treasurer Bette Laatsch.
Winners of the Presidents’ Challenge were voted on by members present and awarded with a gift certificate to
various quilt stores. During 2020 members were asked to create any fabric quilt
using at least three quilting techniques. Winners of the Creativity category were
Betsy Mathison and Cathy Hawthorne, Color Theory was Cathy Hathorne,
Workmanship was won by Bette Laatsch, pictured below and Members Choice
was won by Priscilla Couey pictured right.
Cathy Hawthorne is providing us each month
with a new Block-of-the-Month pattern. Quilts
are encouraged to be completed by December
2021. On December 8 and 15, 10 members
met in the Craft Room of Building C to sew
strip quilts from pieces taken from our Club
stash of fabrics for charity giving.
At the November quilters meeting, Betsy
Mathison demonstrated the patten for Mini-
Magnet Quilt Wall hangings pertaining to the various seasons and holidays.
Our January program will be presented by Betsy Mathison and Ruth Philliben
on “all things chenille.” They have sewed five-inch squares of fabric together
that will be ready to be chenilled for a spectacular item. Our Club meets each Tuesday afternoon from 1—4 PM
in the Craft Room of Building C. We are limited to 10 persons in attendance, but stop and see what we are
creating that day!
A Giving Christmas by Paul Filstrup
The Ahwatukee Recreation Center
has had a remarkably successful
food drive for St Mary’s Food Bank.
As of this date, we have collected
over 1100 pounds of food and $1885
in checks. In these tough times, this
is desperately needed food for those
who have lost their jobs.
We want to thank all those involved
in helping with this drive and,
especially, the ARC Pickleball Club
for sponsoring this charitable
project. Several members of the
Club gave up much of their time and
energy - we want to thank you so
much.
