April JIB SHEET May 2022 Spring is here and it is time for our annual Put-in-Bay Yacht Club clean-up day! We would appreciate as many members as possible Saturday, May 7th at 8:30 am to assist with getting our club house, grounds, pavilion, storage area and docks in ship shape condition. Lunch will be provided and free dockage is available that day for members coming to help with clean-up. There will be a board meeting immediately following lunch. For dockage or if you are interested in coming in and helping out on a different day please call or email C.C. Wisniewski at 419-285-4505, manager@pibyc.org Each year on Memorial Day weekend, PIBYC holds a brief service honoring those members who have passed away since last Memorial Day. The officers hold a service on the dock and each member is commemorated by a red rose placed in the bay from the dock by the Auxiliary. Please make us aware of any current or past members who have passed away since last May 14, 6 pm May—even if you think we already know. COMMODORE’S BRIEFING The club belongs to all of its members. As your Commodore, I am merely one of the custodians. PIBYC is, and always has been, a volunteer-run club. I’ve heard it said, “PIBYC is where you go to make friends” and no statement could be truer. Members who give a few hours of themselves not only help us keep the cost of membership down but, by being present and working alongside other members, get to meet and make new friends. The last two years have gifted our club with a sizable number of new faces. Come down, introduce yourself and find out why PIBYC is the island’s “friend factory." On that note, April showers bring May flowers, which means Clean-up day (May 7) is just around the corner. The more hands we have for Clean-up day, the easier it is for all. If you have any special equipment you want to bring to use, please do. We always need a couple extra wheelbarrows, rakes, shovels, etc. There are plenty of "honey-do" jobs that need attention—both inside and out. There will be a jobs list inside to pick from. New this year, Jason Cooper (Food & Beverage trustee) and I have made the decision that when the work is done, the bar will be open along with the food provided for all. After the club is spic and span, join us Saturday, May 14 for the official start of the 2022 season: the Lighting of the Cupola and the Soup Cook-off. Bring a crockpot of your best recipe to share. Perhaps you will be judged the next winner of the Golden Ladle. We’ll close out May with our Memorial Service and following brunch on Sunday May 29. In this Jib sheet, Connie Miller has provided a refrigerator-friendly, one-page schedule of events that you can keep handy and add to as other special events come along. If you have an idea for an event, or would like to help organize one, please share with Connie, Steve Harris or me. Lastly, don’t forget to buy your Rolling Raffle ticket if you haven’t already. There’s still a few left and you can buy yours on our website pibyc.org. There are still plenty of weekly pulls left and the grand prize is $5000.00. Looking forward to a great year and see you in May! Jeffery S. Berquist – Commodore 2022 PIBYC Bridge Jeffery S. Berquist- Commodore Steven G. Harris - Vice Commodore Constance S. Miller – Rear Commodore REAR COMMODORE Fellow boaters enjoyed the I-LYA spring meeting event April 1–3 in Westlake, Ohio. PIBYC sponsored a hospitality room on Friday night. There were informative meetings about our favorite power and sail regattas Saturday, and then a delicious new low country boil dinner Saturday night. Many hands make light work and we need you! Help us get the club and grounds in order for the 2022 season by joining us on Saturday May 7th beginning at 0830. There's a job for every skill set, from polishing trophies to planting shrubs there's a full list of chores to choose from. If you're not able to join us on the 7th consider stopping by and helping with a job from the chore chart on the office door. starting April 15. We will have lunch available after clean-up. Does anyone have what it takes to challenge three-time champion Joy Cooper? Fire up your crockpots for the third annual Soup Cook Off at the Cupola Lighting on May 14 th. The 2022 Memorial Service will take place at 1200 on Sunday May 29th. Lastly don’t forget to purchase you rolling raffle tickets. A few tickets are still available. Congratulations to all of our Saturday night drawing winners! Constance S. Miller – Rear Commodore
OFFICE CLIPS Happy Spring! I hope everyone had a wonderful winter. You have probably heard by now, but this past winter, Put-in-Bay Yacht Club tried something new, and stayed OPEN! We were open 2 days a week through the whole winter! It was fantastic seeing old and new members join us for Euchre, good food, good drinks and of course great friendship. It’s definitely kept us busy through the cold months. I still can’t believe how many people came out each week. If you have your dockage requests, please check out the club website after April 1st. All dockage requests are done electronically and will get an email or phone call confirmation. AUXILIARY NEWS Spring has sprung in Ohio! I am looking forward to more days of sunshine, blooming flowers, and warming temps. We will be back enjoying the patio at PIBYC before we know it. I can’t wait for Summer 2022. It seems that the covid numbers are dwindling, and this summer will be more like summers of the past. The Auxiliary Board: myself, Vice President Sue Fegen, Secretary Suzanne McFeaters, and Treasurer Deeann Beatty have been busy planning events for us to enjoy at the club. We can’t wait to see you again at one of our luncheons, the Swim Sail Ice Cream Social, or just having a happy hour cocktail or brunch at the club. This year we are hoping to bring back something old from over 40 years ago! The 1980 PIBYC cookbook. We would like to reprint and sell the cookbook with all the old recipes and add some new ones. I have heard all about this and can’t wait to try some recipes from the past including recipes from the Neff, Market, and Ripich families. Past President Christy Bykowski has agreed to continue helping with the Ship's Store. We will be adding some new items this spring and will continue to add different items throughout the summer. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us if there is something you want to see in the store. Remember to keep an eye on the Jib Sheet, the bulletin board in the club, and on social media for Auxiliary updates. I’m looking forward to being among our island friends soon, and I hope to see you enjoying the club and making new memories this summer. Cheers to Spring! Krista Calfee – Auxiliary President If you haven't seen some of Jill Cook's awesome sail bags in the Ship's Store, you're missing out. Jill donates half of her profits from each sale to our very own PIB Community Swim/Sail program. The sail bags and totes are all made from donated/recycled sails. However, her stash of sails to recycle into bags is depleted. If you have an old sail which is past its functional life taking up space, please consider donating it to Jill to be recycled into beautiful and useful items. If you have a sail you would be willing to donate, contact Jill at jillccooks@yahoo.com. Help fund water safety education in our island community. I would like to take this opportunity and welcome all new and existing members back for our 2022 season! We are starting off with a record number of members standing at 605. I also want to highly recommend if you have not paid your 2022 membership dues, but intend to renew, please make sure you do so prior to April 15th. Any outstanding membership not paid in full prior to April 15 th will be inactivated. I want to thank our Membership Secretary Jim Dettmer and his wife Linda for maintaining the membership renewal process throughout the year. I also would like to thank the rest of the Membership & Communication Committee for all their efforts. Looking forward to seeing everyone this Spring! Scott Owens – PIBYC Trustee, Membership and Communications Chair The food and beverage part of our club has enjoyed an unprecedented off season! This is a new direction for PIBYC and many members and year-round residents enjoyed having our club open this winter. Thank you C.C. Wisniewski for a wonderful winter season. Many Island residents joined our club because of the great family atmosphere, food and service. My committee and I are always looking for feedback on our food and beverage program and I welcome your comments and questions. My email address is: jason@islandhardwarestore.com Jason Cooper – PIBYC Trustee, Food and Beverage Committee Chair
LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Dear Members, I am grateful and excited to begin the 2022 season. I have met so many wonderful friends at our club. Barb Chrysler was the “first yacht club friend” that I made when I joined this great club. Barb told it like it was, gave incredible and sincere squeezes and kept me laughing. I am grateful for the time I was given with her and will remember her fondly. Memories and friendships are our club’s greatest gifts. Cherish the time we have with each other; it is never long enough. Special thanks to Marilyn Paselsky for her editing and support. If you are someone who submits articles, please submit no later than the 15th of each month or if you would like to share a photo please email Amycshamrock@yahoo.com or PIBYCJibSheet@pibyc.org. Amy Catherine Schulte – Editor If you haven’t already heard, it is with great sorrow that we relay the sad news that Barb Chrysler passed on February 14, 2022. Barb was the manager of the club from 2012 until she retired at the end of 2020. She became an Island resident in 1980, and was an outstanding part of the Put-in-Bay community. She loved animals, bird watching, Bacardi and Cokes (not Pepsi), adventures, and her friends and family. A celebration of life will take place at the Put-in-Bay Yacht Club on Saturday, May 21st from 2 to 6 pm. Our sincere condolences to her family and friends, she will be missed. At the North Channel Yacht Club Commodore’s Ball in January 2022, representatives of PIBYC presented NCYC with eleven custom life rings to replace those lost in high water storms. The rings were funded by A very happy 90th birthday to donations in honor of the decades-old friendship between the two clubs Past Commodore Bob Bahney! and their respective cruising fleets. Left to right are Patrick and Linda Whelan, Robert and Ellin Shevchuk, PC Rob Ault, and Herb and Beth Albrecht.
