FROM THE PRINCIPAL.......
    Kia ora koutou,

Schools run on very small budgets and in order to deliver the best possible learning
environment and experiences we rely heavily on the support of volunteers, donations and
    additional fundraising.
At Paekākāriki School we are constantly looking for ways to deliver programmes for our
tamariki and to provide experiences and resources to enhance the learning environment.
We are, extremely grateful for the support of whānau and community members who make
small but regular financial donations to our Kura. Much of this money goes into providing food,
stationery, resources and paying for trips for those children who would otherwise miss out.
This is a great way to ensure equity for all learners.
In addition to the financial support, we are also extremely grateful to those who volunteer
their time to support the tamariki of Paekākāriki School. There are many ways people can do
    this:
Join the PTA. This group is actively fundraising for a new senior playground and has also
recently contributed to the purchase of outdoor learning resources for the Tuakana
       syndicate.

Join the School Board and play an active role in the governance of our school.

Join the Garden Group, help grow plants and/or help organise the plant sales. These sales
are a major part of our school's fundraising and the money goes directly into the gardening
curriculum programme. Even helping to weed the gardens would be much appreciated and
can be done at any time that suits you.

Help on school trips - when whānau provide transport for school trips we can avoid using
buses and trains which reduces the cost to other families.

Coach or manage sports teams. There are many opportunities for children to participate
in sports on the Kāpiti Coast but most of these require an adult who can coach and/or
       manage the team.
Further in this newsletter, I acknowledge two of our amazing volunteers who have supported
the children of Paekākāriki School for many many years.

    Ngā mihi nui

    Julia

IMPORTANT INFORMATION.......

School closes for the term on THURSDAY APRIL 14th at 3pm.
We look forward to welcoming everyone back to school for Term 2 on Monday May 2nd.

A REMINDER that school is open from 8:30 am and the first school bell rings at 8:55 am every
day. We really encourage you to make sure your children arrive at school BEFORE the bell. A lot
of important connecting and preparing for the day happens during this first part of the day.

IF your child is late they need to write their name on the whiteboard, located at the front of the
triangle garden next to the admin office and go directly to their classroom. It would be helpful if
you could phone the office as you are dropping them off.

Positive Behaviour for learning (PB4L) - Barefoot Learner Focus -

Mohiotanga - Sharing of information

A Paekākāriki Barefoot learner - can share ideas, ask for help if needed, and listen to others
point of views.

Congratulations
At our assembly last week I had the pleasure of 'pulling out of the hat' 4 student names for our
PB4L prize draw. Throughout the term, students earn special stones in recognition of their
positive barefoot learner behaviour. Twice a term we draw 4 names for a special prize -
afternoon tea with me in the principal office, with a friend each. Congratulations to Kade Ralph,
Sasha Carly- Hendry, Eleanor Kennedy and Jasmin McArtney.

Volunteers
Sue Stevens
Sue is a long term Paekākāriki resident and has made the walk up Wellington Road to our
school for many many years. Sue has spent much of her time in the new entrant classroom
reading with children, sitting alongside children as they played and providing much-needed
assistance for the teacher in the room.
Thank you Sue, for al that you’ve done for the children of Paekākāriki.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION.......
Naomi Ratana
Most of you know Naomi, a wonderful support staff member on our team but what you may not know
is that Naomi has volunteered as a netball coach and manager for more than 12 years - that is A LOT
of cold, wet, windy Saturdays spent at Te Atiawa Courts.

Over these 12 years, she has coached and managed sometimes two teams per year and has had a
huge role in encouraging young players to continue with netball through into their college years.
Many trophies have been won by our small school over the years thanks to Naomi’s skill and hard
mahi. In addition to this Naomi has also umpired several games each Saturday, a difficult and
thankless job much of the time!

This year Naomi has hung up her whistle and will enjoy Saturdays with her whānau. We want to say a
massive THANK YOU Naomi for everything you’ve done for Paekākāriki school netballers over the
years. You leave a big gap but we hope you can enjoy more relaxing weekends.

Not only has Naomi coached netball at Paekākāriki School for many years, she was once a key member of our
                                              school team!

    From Our Students
    Hello readers,

As I am writing this piece I would like to say that because a family member of mine (My father)
Has come down with covid, I am currently at home.

Today I have decided to write about what we normally do in a week of school. On most days,
our routine stays the same, yet on some days (like Monday, Wednesday or Thursday) the time
table differs to make way for other events like kapa haka, Technology or marking.
We start off by doing a karakia and a song outside before going inside to do the roll and have a
pod meeting. After that we go into our separate learning groups (Seeds, Stones, Pips, and
Wailers) and begin our rotational work, the classes on a Monday are Slips time (time to work on
our projects and contract work which has to be done by every Monday), Math with Whaea Jen,
reading with Whaea Rachel, and writing with Whaea Jess. After two, hour long rotations we
have morning tea and then we have teacher read (self explanatory, the teacher reads the class
a story) or Squirt (super quiet uninterrupted reading time). After this is done on Wednesdays
the year sevens and eights go to technology which lasts from 12:00 to 3:00.

On Mondays we don’t do any of these to make time for marking to take place before lunch. We
have two half hour sessions before going into marking (on Mondays) where the teacher checks
if we are up to date with our weekly contract work and our slips projects. Once this is done we
go out to lunch which lasts for an hour before heading back to class to do an afternoon activity,
    which differs daily.

vegetables, herbs and bee-friendly flower seedlings!
There will also be a small variety of other plants for sale.
Watch out for more publicity on this soon.
The May plant sale is one of two annual plant sales that
raise money to fund our kura's gardening curriculum.
Please support this great mahi while getting good quality
plants for your home and garden at the same time!

SCHOOL NOTICES

Bikes and Scooters
We are very lucky in Paekākāriki to have a safe community in
which to cycle. Students and whanau who cycle and scooter to
school please remember you must WALK your bikes into and out
of the school grounds. This helps keep other cyclists and pedestri-
ans safe. Students who wish to ride bikes or scooters at lunch
time need to be wearing shoes and a helmet.

School Gate Safety
For the safety of our tamariki, all of our school gates need to be
closed during school hours. Please make sure you close the gates
behind you, thank you.
