In 1818 the building was purchased by Stanisław Staszic, a leader of the Polish Enlightenment, who ordered its renovation in a neoclassical style. Afterawrds Staszic transferred the building to the Society of Friends of Science, the first Polish scientific organization. The Staszic Palace is now the headquarters of the Polish Academy of Sciences, which includes, inter alia, the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology. The palace also houses the headquarters of other scientific institutions, such as the Polish Phenomenological Association.
