Inception
 Rec Park
“I ... regard a recreation ground as an almost
necessary attachment to every village or
township, certainly as an important adjunct to
the moral and physical training of the young...”
The Memorial gates at Recreation Park still in use today
                                These words were
spoken by Reverend This was unheard of – to buy land for recreation! However,
Edmund King Miller, his proposal was passed at a meeting of residents, and in
an Anglican priest of January 1876, land was purchased, fenced and planted
energy and vision, who for £240. That same year, the oval was established and
was instrumental in the the Show Hall built for £360.
                                establishment of the
Willunga Recreation Park. Rev. Miller and his wife left Willunga on his retirement in 1891.
In 1952, many years after his death in 1911, an imposing
After serving as the entrance to the Recreation Park was built as a memorial
first Headmaster of the to Rev. Miller, and also to Mr Frank L. Aldam, who
Pulteney Street School in presented land to the Park Committee that connected the
Adelaide and then as the park to Main Road.
                                incumbent of St Georges,

moved to Willunga in 1863, where he served Willunga, Willunga’s cultural, sporting and social life and the
Noarlunga and Aldinga for the next 29 years. community owes a debt of gratitude to this visionary
                                                              minister.
Rev. Miller had an extremely successful ministry, with many x
new buildings constructed, such as St Anne’s in Aldinga
and the second St Stephen’s at Willunga.
His work for Willunga was not limited to Church issues,
and he was tireless in his efforts to settle disputes and
further the interests of the district.

The Recreation Park was conceived because Rev. Miller
believed that the youth of the time needed ‘space’,
somewhere away from public houses and gaming rooms,
so he proposed that 8 acres of land be purchased for a
recreation ground for the township of Willunga.
