Working to improve the quality of life for disabled children, young
people and their families in Derby City and Southern Derbyshire

                 June 2019 O

September 2018 BulletinWe are excited to announce a new service that will be
starting soon at Umbrella for children/young people
from the age of 6-18 years thanks to 2 years of funding
from Global’s Make Some Noise (Local radio station
                                  funding).

The project will provide a range of fun, exciting
activities for children and young people, who have
Special Educational Needs and/or have a disability but
do not meet the high threshold for support services
                                  from the local authorities.

There will be a range of activities and sessions that will be children and young
people led within the community. The aim is to encourage socialisation, empower
the young people, broaden horizons, develop independence skills and encourage
young people to make informed decisions. Within this exciting new project, we will
give young people taster sessions of activities, tailored to their abilities.

Unfortunately this project is not suitable for children and young people who require
1:1 or 1:2 supports, help with personal care or transport. The service will be
tailored towards children and young people with mild/moderate disabilities and will
provide evening and weekend sessions as well as play schemes at accessible
     venues during school holiday times.

If you know of any children, young
people and families who may be
     interested in this new exciting
service, or if you couldn’t make our
     information event on 28th May,
please call our Single Point of
Access on 01332 785658 and ask
for a referral to Becky Owen.

What’s happening in Children's Services

                                         Trips
The children love spending time at Umbrella House and develop so much
confidence and independence. They have the freedom to explore and choose the
activities they take part in throughout the day.

The new sensory room is so popular with the children to relax in. They especially
    enjoy the interactive floor projector.

Baking is always a popular activity and the children are making the most from
spending time and in newly refurbished kitchen.

                       Side by Side Youth Group
The 11-18 year olds come along once
    a month with Umbrella’s support
workers to have lots of fun, building
    friendships and developing life skills
    together.

The young people have loved taking
part in games nights, Star Wars
    activities, crafts and much more.

Last month they all worked as a team
to make a delicious curry for their
    dinner.

What’s happening in Adult Services

    INDE
The INDE group enjoyed a day out on a narrowboat in
Nottingham during the Easter holidays. They tried lots of
different conservation activities including making bird
boxes and litter picking. The young adults attached their
bird boxes to the trees along the canal. Everyone
enjoyed this activity and we are thankful to say, the
group were all very careful with the hammer and no
fingers were inured! The young adults even made a
couple of extra boxes to hang in Umbrella’s garden.

                                           We also had the
                                           opportunity to
                                           steer the narrow
                                           boat and work the
                                           locks which all of
the young adults loved to do! Lauren in
particular enjoyed showing off her skills when
demonstrating how to open the locks.

It was such a lovely day out, even the wind and
rain didn’t stop us having fun and we are all
excited to continue our conservation work on
                                           the narrowboats.

                                              TEAM
The Wednesday group had a lovely day
visiting Cycle Derby at Markeaton Park this
month. All of our young adults were able to
get involved and have a ride around the
park on the fully accessible bikes. They
were hoping for a bit of sunshine but the
cloudy weather certainly didn’t stop the fun
that was had by everyone, particularly
Daima who was able to show us his
fantastic cycling skills. The group have
already planned their next visit to Cycle
Derby and what a great way to spend the
                                              day!

Information, Advice and Family Support Continued

    Parent and girls Support Group

Our girls and parents support group meets
one Friday each month at Umbrella House.
In May our theme was film night and the girls
and their parents chose to watch The
Greatest Showman. They all had a great
time singing along and munching on popcorn.
It was one of our young people’s birthdays so
there was cake too! The girls also enjoyed
    some Greatest Showman themed crafts.

Boys with Autism discussion group and workshop

In May we also held a boys with autism discussion group and workshop for parents
and carers. Tracey Green form Challenge Consultancy facilitated this on our behalf.
We asked parents who were attending to submit their questions to us beforehand
and then Tracey facilitated discussions around these topics to enable parents to
learn from her experience and expertise and from each other. It was a very
interesting workshop and feedback from parents was that they would like more of
this style workshops in the future. We will be advertising new workshops very soon
so keep your eyes peeled! We would also like to hear from you about any topics you
would like our workshops to cover. If you have any ideas please e-mail the Family
