Welcome to all garden visitors
In 1927 Elsie Wagg persuaded her friends to open their gardens to raise money
for Queen Alexandra’s nurses and thus the National Garden Scheme was born.
Through thick and thin, garden owners have generously shared their gardens
through open days, and more recently in videos, and continued raising money for
the raft of nursing and caring charities (listed on p30).
In 2022 the NGS in Kent embraces a very wide variety of gardens - from
plantspeople’s tiny gardens, groups of urban gardens, a trail near Dover (you need

Most gardens welcome you to pay as you arrive (those which accept cashless are
marked c); you can often book your visit in advance (‘prebooking available’) and
occasionally it is necessary to prebook (‘prebooking essential’).
I am very grateful to owners for their swift adjustment to these changes, and
also for their time and talent. Thank you also to the NGS Kent team who enable
openings through supporting gardens or engineering publicity; and to the places
that distribute booklets such as libraries and garden centres.

I wish you all a very enjoyable garden-visiting year.

Gardens open by arrangement, and/or for group visits
Many of our gardens can be visited on days other than
the official NGS open days, by arrangement in advance

give an in-depth guided tour.
Charges may depend on the numbers in a group,
the nature of the guided tour, and the catering
requirements. Garden owners’ contact details are given
in each garden entry, where appropriate, and requests
should be made directly to them.
