KIA MAIA INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS CHRISTIAN HOSTEL
Prospectus for 2022 Kia Maia Hostel
                                  Introduction
Wellington is a great city in which to live and study and Kia Maia is a great ‘home away from home’
for international students. Your hosts are Graeme & Rosemary Wallis and Naomi Afoa. Making
decisions about where to study and live can be very exciting and a little puzzling at times. This
handbook is designed to help you to decide whether Kia Maia is right for you. If you need more
information, please ask. Welcome. We are situated in Central Wellington, within easy walking
distance of Victoria University Kelburn and Pipitea Campuses, Massey University, WELTEC and The
Cordon Bleu Cookery School. We are very handy to the cafes, shops, libraries, galleries and outdoor
recreations this picturesque city has to offer. We offer a relaxed, friendly, family-style
accommodation for international students. Our residents are a mix of first year and returning
students. With only 12-15 residents, you will be a significant member of our community, where you
can work to achieve your goals. As a member of such a small community, you will know all the other
residents. Caring for one another is part of the Kia Maia way of life. The supportive environment will
help you to manage issues that may arise such as homesickness, illness, lack of sleep, and stress
from assessments.
The Staff: Kia Maia is administered by an independent, non-profit trust board. Hosts Rosemary,
Graeme and Naomi, have primary responsibility for the welfare of the residents and for maintaining
an environment that supports successful study. They live on the premises and manage the hostel,
overseeing the discipline which ensures Kia Maia meets its obligations to its residents. The Hostel Kia
Maia is a large, two-storied wooden villa. On the ground floor is the hosts’ apartment, one twin
students’ room, the residents’ TV lounge, the kitchen, dining room and the laundry. Upstairs are
students’ rooms (4 single and 3 share twin) and the bathroom and toilet facilities. There is a hallway
phone for student use on both floors.
The Accommodation: Kia Maia offers single rooms and same-sex share-twin rooms. Students
provide their own bedding. We recommend the following:
 • A duvet and duvet cover
• A warm blanket
• A pillow
 • 2 pillow slips
 • 2 sets of sheets
 • At least 2 towels, face cloths and bathmats plus personal toiletries.
For short stay summer students, we may be able to provide some bedding. Your room is a great
place for you to work and rest. There are some basic guidelines for the way you care for your room,
such as not drying your clothes in your room and taking good care of your furnishings. We ask you
not to use drawing pins, stickers, or tape on the woodwork or walls. Each room has a pin board for
posters and photos. As we have heat pumps, please do not bring your own heater. You are expected
to keep your own room clean and tidy, free of rubbish. You are expected to vacuum clean your room
at least once every week. Your hosts will, on occasion, check your room for cleanliness.
Toilets There are two single-sex toilets at Kia Maia. The women’s toilet is off the main bathroom
and the men’s is at the end of the hallway adjacent to Room 7. There are also two toilets on the
ground floor.
Food and Meals We provide food for breakfast, lunch and dinner, 7 days a week. In addition,
residents have access to the kitchen 24 hours a day for snacks and drinks. Residents prepare their
own meals for breakfast and lunch from food provided by the hostel. Each day residents work
together in pairs to prepare an evening meal for everyone. Evening meals are at 6.30pm. The cooks
order the ingredients needed for the menu of their choice. It is important that residents ask for
advice when unsure about procedures or how to operate equipment. After the meal, residents clean
and tidy the dining room and kitchen and do the dishes. Students leave Kia Maia with cooking skills
they never had when they entered! Shared evening meals are central to our community life and

communication at Kia Maia and, with few exceptions, residents are expected to participate. In
addition to this time, there are trips away (skiing, beach holiday) and occasional evenings organised
for students.
Cleaning common areas of the Hostel (hallways, kitchen, dining, TV room, toilets and bathroom) are
cleaned each week by a professional cleaner and students maintain daily cleaning. In addition,
residents are responsible for cleaning their own study bedrooms.
Laundry: A washing machine and drier are available for student use. Buckets are available for special
soaking of stained articles of clothing. Each student supplies his or her own laundry powder.
Students are responsible for the cleaning of their bedding and clothing. The drier is for use only
when the weather outside doesn’t permit laundry to be pegged out on the washing line.
Internet Use: Kia Maia has students who attend a variety of learning institutions and it is not
connected to the Victoria University server. However, Kia Maia has a separate internet connection
which provides wireless access from all rooms. The present broadband internet plan has enough
bandwidth for normal use. Our new fibre-optic cable provides a fast service and a broad bandwidth.
Internet may be monitored to ensure that no illegal internet activity occurs.
Parking: Parking spaces at the rear of Kia Maia are rented to the public. Students who are car
owners will need to get a residents parking card from the Wellington City Council. This entitles them
to park on the street outside. Parking at the rear of the house may be available to the students
during weekends (i.e. Saturdays and Sundays). Parking on the lawn at the rear of the house is not
permitted at any time.
Fire escapes: These are solely for emergency use. No student or guest is permitted to use the fire
escapes except in an emergency. There are occasional evacuation practices.
Guests: Your guests are most welcome here and share in the evening meal provided that the cooks
are advised in advance. All guests are asked to leave by 11.00 p.m.
Mail: This should be sent to you at: Kia Maia International Students Christian Hostel, 216 The
Terrace, CBD, Wellington 6011 NEW ZEALAND. Mail is placed for collection on the table in the
ground floor foyer. People who are not residents of Kia Maia should not receive mail at this address.
Community responsibilities Community life here aims to support you, both academically and
socially, by providing a safe, friendly, and stable environment. The rules of the hostel are few. Our
focus is for all residents to take collective responsibility for the supportive and harmonious
atmosphere at the hostel.
 Be considerate
• People sleep at different times and require quietness for study.
• Clean up after preparing and eating food in the kitchen and dining room - don’t leave it to others
to clean up after you.
• Leave the bathroom area clean and dry for the next person using the facilities. • Be quick with the
laundry so others are not stopped from using the machines. • Be aware of other residents’ needs
and help if possible.
• Clean your room once a week, promptly returning the vacuum cleaner to its cupboard for the next
person to use. Christian Character of Kia Maia Kia Mia is a Christian house. This means that Jesus
Christ and His ways are honoured. Christian students can expect to be supported in their faith. All
students are welcome at any time to ask how Christianity is relevant for them. Alcohol Kia Maia’s
alcohol policy prohibits students from storing, drinking, or manufacturing alcohol anywhere within
Kia Maia and its grounds. Students may not bring beer, spirits or wine into Kia Maia or its grounds.
Responsibilities
• Treat others with respect. Any abusive behaviour (such as physical, sexual, racial/ethnic, or
psychological harassment) is not tolerated.
• Keep noise to a minimum, especially at night. Our quiet hours are from 11.00pm-7.30am.
Other issues which require your attention are:
• Smoking is not permitted anywhere in Kia Maia or the grounds.
• Students are not permitted to have pets at Kia Maia.
3

• Firearms and fireworks are not permitted.
• Safety equipment is not to be tampered with.
• Using, possessing, or selling illegal drugs will not be tolerated.
• Pornographic and/or X-rated material in any form (including printed, video and internet sourced) is
not permitted.
• Sexual activity in hostel rooms is not permitted. Where activities in the room (including the above
list), are deemed inappropriate, the wardens will discuss this with the student(s) before any action.
Damage and losses: When Hostel property is damaged or lost, the person responsible, or the
occupant of the room concerned, or the host of any guest who causes it, pays for
replacement/rectification.
Sanctions: Living together requires consideration and tolerance. Residents are encouraged to work
together and communicate effectively to resolve conflict.
Privacy: We will give out your room number and Hostel phone number to those who enquire, unless
you request in writing for that information to be withheld.
Rooms: You are asked not to enter another resident’s room without their permission.
Staying Safe and Secure: Your own safety and security is important to us at Kia Maia. We do
encourage our residents to take care.
Keys: You will be given a key to your room and to the exterior doors of the Hostel. If you lose any
you will be charged to have the lock replaced. Ensure doors and windows around the home are
locked before you leave. Doors should be locked at night.
Insurance for your personal belongings: Kia Maia Hostel assumes no responsibility or liability for
your personal property. Personal insurance does not cover stolen items if the room is not locked.
Absence: It is very important if you intend to be away overnight, to let the Hosts know and leave a
contact telephone number for emergencies.
 • Illness If you are unwell let your friends and the hosts know so that you can have some help.
Special meals and/or a trip to the medical centre can be arranged. A first aid kit is provided on-site
but you are expected to bring your own personal medicines. If you have a medical condition, please
tell the hosts so they are aware of symptoms, side effects and limitations of your condition. At the
beginning of winter all residents should get immunized for influenza. This is usually available free
from the student health office and provides immunity for winter influenza, swine flu and bird flu.
•COVID-19: All residents of Kia Maia are required to be immunised before arrival.
Fire Prevention: Rooms are fitted with smoke detectors. You are asked to make sure your smoke
detector is always functioning. Candles, incense, oil burners, fireworks and smoking are not
permitted, as they are potential fire hazards. We have regular fire drills.
Acceptance, arrivals, departures, returns: If you are interested in applying for residence at Kia Maia,
please let us know and we will send you an application form. Once this is completed and returned,
we will advise you whether your application has been accepted. The application process will involve
an interview, either in person at Kia Maia, or, for students applying from overseas, by telephone, or
ZOOM. Residence at Kia Maia is for a full academic year. In 2022, this runs for 38 weeks from
Monday 21 February to 12 November 2022 (You may apply to stay longer, with a summer contract).
It is critical that applicants understand that they are entering a contract to board at Kia Maia from
date of arrival until the end of academic year unless agreed otherwise. Residents must give at least
six weeks' notice if they choose to leave at a time other than previously agreed.

applicable Goods & Services Tax. Residents are not invoiced individually, and a late fee applies to
late payments. All fees are paid in advance. We only accept payments as set out in the schedule,
irregular payments increase the administrative overheads and costs. Please note that Kia Maia is
unable to accept payment by credit card.

Bond: All applicants must pay a bond to secure their place at Kia Maia. Applicants are given final
acceptance only when their bond and their completed acceptance form (duly signed) have been
received. The bond is fully refundable, unless there are damages, losses, or cleaning costs to be
       deducted.
