Working and learning from home
We are delighted with the fantastic online learning that the children are doing
and are very impressed with how engaged the children are with the online
lessons as well as the fabulous work that our pupils learning at school are
completing. Well done everyone!
While some may find it easy to adjust to working and learning from home, for
others it can be more challenging. Making sure your child is engaging with all the
learning from home as well as perhaps working from home yourself and running
the family can be very stressful.
Having a structured routine can be very beneficial to positive mental health - for

Sadly I won't be returning afterwards as I have chosen to spend time with him. I wanted to let you know of who you can reach out to for support after I leave, as I am aware that this is a very challenging time for a lot of families. I want to remind you that it is ok to not feel ok and it is always ok to ask for help! If you would like someone to talk to after the half term break, please contact my colleague Toni Medcalf and she will arrange confidential, 1-1 session(s) for you before your new Counselling Services Manager joins Lady Margaret, hopefully at the start of the summer term. You can contact Toni at: tmedcalf.307@lgflmail.org, phone: 07554 008 179. Martin Luther King Day Martin Luther King Day, is a holiday in the United States celebrated on the 20th January, honouring the achievements of Martin Luther King. A Baptist minister who advocated the use of non-violent means to end racial segregation. Dr. Martin Luther King didn’t believe in using violence to change things. Instead, he gave powerful speeches and led peaceful protests. Even so, he was arrested and sent to prison 29 times. Martin Luther King was appointed president of the Montgomery Improvement Association which led the boycott of the Montgomery bus services. (A boycott is where you stop using goods or services to bring about a change.) The bus boycott lasted 381 days at the end of which the US Supreme Court ruled that segregation was illegal. Dr King was a very powerful orator (speech maker). His most famous speech, I Have A Dream, was delivered to an audience of 250,000 people. Hey Day This week we welcomed Hey Day back into school to work with the Key worker children. Social distancing rules were adhered to at all times. Year 5 and 6 had the opportunity to watch some past Hey Day films and start to plan their own film which they will make next week. Follow us on twitter @LMPS www.ladymargaret.ealing.sch.uk
LMPS NEWSLETTER—ISSUE 13 22nd January 2021 E-safety Recommended Reads Troll Stinks Author: Jeanne Willis and Tony Ross. Billy Goat and his best friend Cyril are messing about with the farmer’s mobile phone, taking selfies and playing games… until they find the number for a troll. Their Grandpa Gruff says trolls are bad, so Billy and Cyril decide to get their own back by sending mean messages. After all, trolls really do stink! Don’t they? This story is a 21st century version of the “Billy Goat’s Gruff” fairy story, a familiar tale for both adults and children and provides opportunities for discussion about keeping safe online. Troll Stinks can be used to discuss issues such as cyberbullying, being kind online and taking/sharing pictures. Tek The Modern Cave Boy Author: Patrick McDonnell Tek tells the story of a caveboy in love with tech: his tablet, video games, phone, and TV keep him deep in his cave, glued to his devices, day in and day out. He never sees his friends or family anymore – and his ability to communicate has devolved to just one word: “UGH”! Can anyone in the village convince Tek to unplug and come outside into the big, beautiful world? Tek is a tablet-shaped book that explores the need to balance technology use with ‘real world’ activities. Tek can help explore the need for children to balance internet use with offline world fun. It can be used to discuss using technology responsibly and the need for children to explore the world both on and offline. Book recommendation for adults Books, books, books. They will increase your lifespan, lower your stress and boost your intelligence. They will give you fuller, thicker hair. Whatever the breathless claims about reading, one thing is certain: losing yourself in a great novel is one of life’s most enduring and dependable joys. A bit of escapism has always been important, but right now, while we’re confined to our houses, escaping into a good book spells pure relief. During lockdown there are a million and one things we could be doing. Whether you’ve pledged to learn Spanish or try out a new focaccia recipe per day, we’ve all become slightly obsessed with setting ourselves (often unattainable) goals. Why not go back to basics instead? Grab a book A Promised Land Author: Barack Obama A riveting, deeply personal account of history in the making-from the president who inspired us to believe in the power of democracy. In the stirring, highly anticipated first volume of his presidential memoirs, Barack Obama tells the story of his improbable odyssey from a young man searching for his identity to leader of the free world, describing in strikingly personal detail both his political education and the landmark moments of the first term of his historic presidency-a time of dramatic transformation and turmoil. Virtual Library https://library.thenational.academy
Children in England will be able to access books online free during school
closures via a virtual library.
Internet classroom Oak National Academy created the library after schools
moved to remote learning for the majority of pupils until February half-
term. Formed with The National Literacy Trust, the library will provide a
book a week from its author of the week. The aim is to increase young
readers' access to e-books and audiobooks, particularly the most
disadvantaged.
Every week a popular children's author or illustrator will provide free books, exclusive videos and their
top three recommended reads. Having access to a school library is really important for children. School
libraries nurture a love of reading that can enrich children’s literacy
skills, academic achievements and mental wellbeing.

Follow us on twitter @LMPS_School www.ladymargaret.ealing.sch.ukLMPS NEWSLETTER—ISSUE 13 22nd January 2021 Mental Health Ideas which can be used to support positive well-being with your children. Encourage your child to be themselves Helping your child to recognise their character strengths is a great way to build their confidence and appreciate the unique- ness they bring to the world. Encourage children to notice and appreciate their own strengths, and those of others too. Be grateful It can be easy to feel other people’s lives are better than our own. We can start to think that others are more beautiful, have more money and fun, or simply ‘have more’. One idea is to bring attention to what’s working well in your/their life by developing gratitude skills. To develop these skills, you can use techniques such as starting a gratitude jar, writing a gratitude journal or having a gratitude conversation. Be mindful. Our minds can be very busy, getting pulled into thinking about the past or worrying about the future. Finding ways to focus on what’s happening in the present moment is another way to build your child’s wellbeing. One way in which you can help develop these skills is drawing for 10 minutes. Set a timer for 10 minutes and challenge the children to draw something they can see. This activity isn’t about what the drawing looks like, it’s about whether they are able to focus on the activity and bring their attention back when it wanders. Be kind Kindness is a win-win for wellbeing. The research shows us that when we’re kind to others, we not only boost each recipient’s wellbeing; it tends to have the same effect on our own sense of wellness too. Being kind can help us connect with others, and our relationships play a crucial role in our mental health and wellbeing in the long term. Be resilient Being resilient means bouncing back when you encounter challenges, setbacks or failures. We all go through times when we struggle, so building our resilience is crucial to helping us cope. Make a “time to talk” every day. Ask your child about their day, their learning, their friendships. A car journey or walking with your child can provide the ideal chance to catch up. Sit and watch your child’s favourite programme with them. If they like playing online games, why not ask them to teach you? You will be surprised how much conversation takes place. When your child faces something difficult, talk it through with them and encourage them to understand that when facing challenges it is how we deal with them that counts. Websites which can be used to support your child’s well-being are below. There are lots of ideas for you to try. https://www.place2be.org.uk/our-services/parents-and-carers/coronavirus-wellbeing-activity-ideas-for-families/ https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/five-ways-to-help-childrens-wellbeing/zfb2d6f Science Online science at Lady Margaret Primary School is now well underway. In week one, in Year Six we were learning about circuit diagrams and how to construct them. In Year Five we started off look- ing at how we know at how scientists discovered that the Earth is round rather than flat. Year Four investigated what kind of electricity (Battery, mains power) different appliances used. Whilst Year Three started investigating how shadows were formed. This week Year Six are investigating how the volume of a buzzer is affected by the addition of more batteries and are putting their results onto a graph. Year Fives are investigating how we get day and night. Year Fours are looking at how to construct simple circuits and year Three is looking at how to change the size of a shadow. Science star of the week must be awarded to Aliyah in 3HK who produced a fantastic explanation video of how shadows are formed and how to change their size, a true Scientist! Weekly Highlights
Year 1 Highlights
This week we taught the children how to access digimaps, the children have been identifying the
United Kingdom, the four countries which make up the UK and finding Southall on a map. Yonis has
been working incredibly hard this week. He has made his very own paper mache volcano. Well done
for the extra-curricular activities, keep up the hard work.
Parents/carers of Year 1 please take pictures of any additional learning, and
share on J2E the class teacher would enjoy seeing the work you are doing at
home.
We really enjoy receiving children's science work this week. Well done to all
of the children that have identified omnivores, herbivores and carnivores by
labelling their diagrams.
Year 3 Weekly Highlights
This week in year 3, we have been learning all about the changes from the
Stone Age to the Iron Age. We learnt what BC and AD stand for and organized
these events chronologically.
In writing, we have begun creating our descriptive pieces. We began by writing
our first paragraph with a strong focus on using adjectives to create detail. In
this piece of writing, Kabeesha has included several fantastic adjectives that
really help to paint an image in the reader’s mind. In Maths, we have
continued to focus on multiplication and division and have even begun to
apply our newly learnt methods to solve word problems.

Year 5 Highlights
This week Year 5 have been working hard to improve their understanding of fractions in
Maths and writing their own chapters based on our core text - Street Child. We have all
been so impressed with the children's learning in our live lessons and also with the
variety and quality of the work uploaded for both the live lessons and the subjects
studied independently in the afternoons. We are very proud of you!
In 5RB, Mrs Bartholomew was particularly impressed with Lilia's engagement with the
Maths live lessons as she made many excellent contributions. Harshaan produced a
super piece of art work based on our study of Indian miniatures and in our study of our
core text, Street Child, Nawal was able to use some excellent vocabulary in her extended piece of writing.
In 5JP, Mr Peacock was delighted with the speed and willingness of Akaal to help provide technical
support to his classmates during their live lessons. Harun produced a remarkably detailed chart of
Hindu religious holidays that occur over the course of a year. Arjun demonstrated a great range of
vocabulary and sentence structure in the first chapter of his narrative, 'Life with Grimy Nick'.
In 5LC, Miss Clarridge was delighted by the artwork Rithish produced
based on our study of Indian miniatures. Sahibjot has made excellent
contributions during our live lessons, particularly when we have been
looking at figurative language and shared writing together. Maryam has
worked hard this week both during lessons and independently to increase her understanding and
confidence with fractions.
To extend their learning further, the children could undertake some research: finding out more
about our Science topic: The Earth in Space and in preparation for our History lesson next week,
find out which countries were part of the British Empire in the Victorian era.
Year 6 Highlights
In 6LN, Miss Nash has been exceptionally impressed with Stefania's contributions in English
as she has articulated her answers clearly. Jahish produced a superb piece of Islamic art,
which was beautiful to see. Throughout all lessons, Amrita has demonstrated a superb
commitment to learning and has produced a wonderful newspaper report linked to our core
text of 1001 Arabian Nights. In addition to this, Anhar has been a phenomenal student
throughout the half term - her dedication, tenacity and hunger to improve is inspirational.
In 6SW, Miss Warsame has been particularly impressed with Duaa's engagement in live
lessons. She is enthusiastic about her learning and has shown real commitment by
attended all sessions on time, prepared and is always willing to share her ideas. Similarly,
Manreet has shown great commitment to her learning so far this half term. She produced a
brilliant piece of work and her depiction of Siddiqua Juma's famous art work was awe-
inspiring. In Writing, Kauan's newspaper was wonderfully written and he continues to
demonstrate great understanding of our very complex core text (1001 Arabian Nights.
In 6TK, Mr Kelly is very impressed with the effort and dedication that Yousuf has demonstrated whilst studying from home.
He engages fully with all lessons and regularly contributes to discussions. Sara is also doing excellently: she has made brilliant
progress in maths in particular. Muskaan, also deserves a special mention for an outstanding newspaper report linked to our
core text - 1001 Arabian Nights.

Starting a conversation about online safety
It can be difficult to know how to start talking to your child about what they’re doing online or who they
might be speaking to. But talking regularly, like you would about their day at school, will help your child
feel relaxed and mean that when they do have any worries, they’re more likely to come and speak to
you. It can help to:
reassure them that you're interested in their life, offline and online. Recognise that they'll be using
the internet to research homework as well talking to their friends.
ask your child to show you what they enjoy doing online or apps they’re using so you can
understand them.
be positive but also open about anything you're worried about. You could say "I think this site's
really good" or "I'm a little worried about things I've seen here."
ask them if they're worried about anything, and let them know they can come to you.
ask them about their friends online and how they know they are who they say they are.
listen for the reasons why your child wants to use apps or site you don't think are suitable, so you
can talk about these together.
ask your child what they think's okay for children of different ages so they feel involved in the
decision making

Nursery Highlights
Nursery have been enthusiastically joining in our daily
rhyme and story sessions. We have really enjoyed seeing all
the rhymes they have shared with us; in particular ‘Zoom
Zoom’ we're going to the moon.
Lots of them completed this task and were showing me
their alien friends for Beegu at the the end of the rhyme
sessions, it was lovely!
Reception Highlights
This week we learnt the rhyme, 'I can sing a rainbow' and talked about our special toys in our RE lessons.
The children really enjoyed bringing their toys to storytime. To extend their learning children could
practice reading their tricky words. We always look forward to receiving children's work and really liked
the amazing sock octopi that the children created. We had many creative designs and some children
made two so they could create a buddy. What a brilliant idea! We also loved the way in maths, children
represented the part-whole model in so many different ways. We can see that the children are learning
to add confidently.
Don't forget to have a look out for small shoots of green
poking their heads out of the ground when you go for
your daily walk. Spring will be here soon!

Year 4: Recap numbers 1 to 10 in French. Learn numbers 11 to 20. Year 5: Les Fetes des Rois, pupils learnt about the Festival of the Kings. The Festival of the Kings takes place on 6 January, the 12th day after Christmas (Noël), when Christians celebrate Epiphany, the arrival of the Three Kings after the birth of Jesus. To celebrate, families in France buy a Kings’ Cake, (une Galette des Rois), a special cake made of pastry and almonds. A charm is hidden inside the cake and whoever receives the piece of cake with the charm (la fève) in it, becomes king (le rois) or queen (la reine) for the day.
