What is a Concussion?
CONCUSSION PROTOCOL
Preseason:
 Contact sport athletes complete a baseline ImPACT neurocognitive computerized evaluation
 All athletes complete a detailed medical history form identifying previous head injuries, hospitalizations and
any relevant diagnostic testing

At time of Injury:
 Remove symptomatic athlete from practice / competition
 Complete a Sport Concussion Assessment
 Athlete sent home with a responsible adult who has been given the Concussion Injury Advice card and
explained the protocol of monitoring the athlete for worsening signs or symptoms
CONCUSSION PROTOCOL
Follow-up:
 Athlete has daily appointments with a Certified Athletic Therapist for symptom evaluation
 NO physical activity and limits cognitive activities while experiencing symptoms
 Schedule an appointment with a Sports Medicine Physician if symptoms are not improving
 Referral to the Accessible Learning Centre on campus if necessary
 Athlete must remain asymptomatic for a period of time (based on the amount of time the athlete experienced
symptoms)
 Begin the graduated return-to-play protocol when the athlete is asymptomatic
 Progress through 6 stages as tolerated
 Prior to return-to-play, re-evaluate using the ImPACT test and compare to baseline values
 Obtain written medical clearance to return to competition

Rowan’s Law
The law establishes mandatory requirements that call for:

• Annual review of concussion awareness resources by athletes, parents, coaches and
  other designated individuals

• A concussion code of conduct, reviewed by athletes, parents, and other designated
individuals, to set out rules of behaviour to minimize concussions while participating
  in sport

• Removal-from-sport and return-to-sport protocols, to ensure that an athlete is
immediately removed from sport if they are suspected of having sustained a
concussion, and that appropriate processes are in place to guide their safe return to
  training and competition
Rowan’s Law – Return to Learn
Process includes:
• Inform a student athlete of the importance to disclose any concussion / head
injury symptoms with his / her athletic therapist
• Have a thorough concussion assessment completed by a healthcare
   professional
• If the student athlete is reporting difficulties with attending class, completing
schoolwork etc., obtain a sports medicine physician’s note and referral to the
Accessible Learning Centre (ALC) on campus
• The student athlete will schedule an appointment with the ALC in person or
   online
• An Accessible Learning Centre (ALC) consultant will meet with a student athlete
and discuss their respective needs and create a Return to Learn Plan with the
   necessary academic accommodations
Rowan’s Law – Return to Learn
Process includes:
• The Accessible Learning Centre (ALC) initiates a process to notify
professors/respective faculties on behalf of the student athlete
• A student athlete is directed by the Athletic Therapist / Sports Medicine
Physician as to concussion management guidelines
• A student athlete increases the amount of schoolwork as tolerated, and the
student athlete has not exhibited or reported a return of symptoms, new
  symptoms, or worsening symptoms
Rowan’s Law – Return to Learn
Process includes:
• If symptoms return or new symptoms appear, the student athlete returns to
the previous stage and only participates in tasks that can be tolerated
• Upon completion of the Return to Learn Plan a Sports Medicine Physician will
reassess the student athlete and provide Medical Clearance to return to full
school activities when appropriate. The Athletic Therapist and/or Sport
Medicine Physician will thoroughly explain verbally and follow in up in written
form (ie. Email) all protocols and procedures the student athlete must follow.
• Until a student athlete has successfully completed their return to learn plan,
they must not participate in any physical activity or sport unless prescribed by
a therapist or physician. This will be documented.
• Progression through the plan is individual, timelines and accommodations may
   vary

Medical Review
A process through which certain Canadian athletes can validate
the medical use of a substance on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s
(WADA) Prohibited List without having to complete the Therapeutic
Use Exemption (TUE) application process.

A medical review is initiated after a U SPORTS or CCAA athlete
goes through doping control and the sample analysis reveals the
presence of a banned substance.

The athlete would have their physician complete and submit a
medical review application form and documentation to support
their medical history.
Medical Review
The medical review will be granted by CCES providing the
athlete can satisfy all of the following conditions.
• Demonstrates by means of appropriate documentation that
he or she has a medical diagnosis made by a licensed
  physician prior to sample collection.
• Has a prescription signed by a licensed physician prior to
sample collection which is consistent with the finding.
• Provides appropriate confirmation that he or she is being
followed and monitored by a licensed physician to ensure
the treatment plan matches the diagnosis.
• Declared the use of the prescribed medication on the
Doping Control Form at the time of testing.

Cannabis Considerations for
                    Student-Athletes
The Canadian Anti-Doping Program (CADP) defines a student-athlete as an
individual who is an athlete and student competing in U SPORTS and/or
CCAA sport activities and who is not in the National Athlete Pool (NAP) for
any sport.

Under the new protocol, samples collected from student-athletes who only
compete in U SPORTS or CCAA events, not be analyzed for cannabis (List
category S8 Cannabinoids). Accordingly, these athletes will not receive an
adverse analytical finding (AAF), or positive test for cannabis.

athletes in Canada go to:

Laurier Student Athlete
Philosophy & Accountability
• All WLU students are expected to understand that they must behave at all times in a manner
consistent with the Wilfrid Laurier University Non Academic Student Code of Conduct (as
outlined in the current Laurier academic Calendar), and will be subject to discipline under that
  Code if it is violated.

• The WLU Department of Athletics and Recreation requires that all student athletes conduct
themselves in a manner consistent with the tradition of academic and athletic excellence and
high values expected at Wilfrid Laurier University. While representing Laurier at any
sanctioned event, including attendance at tournaments, invitational events, league events and
other related functions, student athletes and team athletic staff shall conduct themselves in
such a manner as to ensure that neither the team nor the University are brought into
disrepute. The same applies to team practices and to team social activities.

• Generally, the Head Coach & Captains are responsible for the establishment and
implementation of team rules, behavioral expectations, and team philosophy. The Department
of Athletics and Recreation requires that all teams establish team goals and expectations of
conduct that meet the requirements of the Non Academic Student Code of Conduct, and are
consistent with our commitment to academic and athletic excellence, and in no way detract
from the reputation and image of Wilfrid Laurier University.
Student Athlete
   Behavioural Expectations
The Department of Athletics and Recreation expects all Laurier student athletes to adhere to
the following Student Athlete Code of Conduct. Failure to adhere to the provisions laid out here
will have serious consequences.
1. WLU student athletes are required to behave in a manner which reflects well on the image
of Wilfrid Laurier University by treating teammates, opponents, officials, spectators, and
the public in general with respect and consideration.

2. They must abide by all regulations of their sport as set out by the OUA, U Sports, and the
sport governing body.

3. They must conduct themselves properly in the true spirit of sport and sportsmanship in all
situations.

4. They must not willfully damage the property of others, which would include, but is not limited
to hotel rooms, facilities at Wilfrid Laurier University and other universities, and transportation
vehicles.

5. They must not consume alcohol or illegal/banned substances while en route to or from, or at,
the site of athletic events/contests, in hotel rooms while participating in such athletic
events/contests, or at practices. The consumption or possession of alcohol on Wilfrid Laurier
University team transport is strictly prohibited.

6. They must treat others and themselves with respect and dignity, which includes, but is not
limited to: refraining from all sexist, racist and discriminatory language and/or behaviour,
including any behaviour prohibited by the Ontario Human Rights Code.
