A sick note is valid if it has:
◊ The healer’s name, address and qualifications
◊ Patient’s name, date and time of examination
◊ Description of illness (with patient’s consent) and how
long patient is booked off
◊ Healer’s signature
In terms of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA), a
valid medical certificate must be issued and signed by a medical
practitioner who is registered with a professional council
established by an act of parliament. The Traditional Health
Practitioners Act, 22 of 2007, states that traditional healers can
issue valid medical certificates if they are registered with the
Traditional Health Practitioners Council.
