Church of Melanesia - Solomon Islands (WASH project) This week we turn our Lenten Appeal focus from Uganda to the Solomon Islands. The Anglican Church of Melanesia is seeking funds to build new sanitation facilities for three of its religious communities. Hygienic toilets are something most of us in Aotearoa take for granted - but it is not so in developing countries. The Solomon Islands has a population of 716,167 (2022) who live on six main islands and 344 smaller islands. (Over 900 islands make up their land mass!) Around 45% of the population still practise open defecation, the highest among all the Pacific Nations. For many years the government has tried to roll out WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) projects in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, however, civil unrest during the 1990’s and 2000’s, lack of finance, and mistakes have disrupted the process. There is still a lot of work to do. The process is also multi-pronged as there needs to be buy-in from the community, the construction of the infrastructure, knowledge passed on as to how to fix anything that breaks down, and education on using the amenities, as It can be hard to break old habits. All are time consuming and require resources to be effective. Currently, across the urban and rural sector there is a considerable funding short fall and projects can only go ahead with the financial aid of a funding partner. This is where we can help! The planned new sanitation facilities will strengthen the participating religious communities’ capacity and capability to plan, implement, manage, operate, and maintain improved sanitation facilities not only for themselves, but for visitors and the surrounding community. If you would like to donate, please: Place your donation in a clearly marked envelope (Lenten Appeal, project name) in the offering plate. Use internet banking to send your donation directly to AM, bank a/c number 02 0585 0001796 00; ref Lent 22 or project name. With gratitude, Jean Hollis……………ph 351 4577

A genuine sense of well being and peace for all groups and individuals in spite of the uncertainties confronting us around Covid issues, and the world in turmoil in Eastern Europe. Compassion and understanding for Lay Ministers in their conversations. Praise for the women's prayer retreat held last weekend, and prayer that God will continue His work in the lives of those who were there. Prayer for people who are caring for aging parents. Pray for those people in our church and community who have Covid or are isolating because a family member has it. Homegroups: Give thanks that home groups are going pretty well, but everyone is fining Covid hard. Please pray for the men’s retreat next weekend.
Week Four 1. Looking back to your childhood, what helped you feel you did (or didn’t) belong in the church family? 2. Adding to the 4th question in the booklet. How might we strengthen intergenerational connections a) within our church community? b) In the community around us? 3. Looking at Dame Whina Cooper’s quote on p29, how may we take better care of what the children in our midst “hear, see and feel”? Please email Glenda with any feedback you have to gmhicks@snap.net.nz Hold on...there’s been a change! Charlotte - aka Roo Roo is spirited and adventurous and is also optimistic and fearless. Roo doesn’t ‘freak out’ and is happy-go-lucky and energetic. (Roo can be seen bouncing a lot!) I think this character suits Charlotte better. Do you agree? Kermit says, “You must always stop at STOP signs”! When you see him next, ask him why.
