From the Editor
Well things are certainly heating
up!!! I’m writing this on the
hottest day of the year so far
and the flowers seem to have
burst forth after months of cold
and drought, then excessive wet
stuff. Hopefully this weather will
bode well for the KSM Flower
Show scheduled for 14th August.
Do go along and support this
annual event - details can be
found on page 19.
There is also a Family Village Fete on the KSM Playing Field to look
forward to in August – see page 5 for details. Also check the
forthcoming events for other groups that are restarting.
At the time of this going to print (16th June), changes are being made
to Lockdown restrictions – it might be wise to contact the organisers
to check if events are going ahead once you receive your magazine.
Happy birthday to

4WINDOW ON THE PAST
DID YOU KNOW? Memories of Kingston Past
Kingston juxta Taunton was long the official name of the parish used
in documents. Only in the late 1940s did it become Kingston St
Mary, a help to the postal services as there are
many Kingstons and a fitting recognition of our
lovely church. The main road through the village,
once a turnpike, should be known as The Street.
Here is the oldest property, Bobbetts. Samuel of
this family was remembered for ‘sticking the
prongs of a pick into the pate of his father’s
apprentice’, he fled and escaped justice. But another criminal,
Samuel Yandall was executed at Dodhill Green, just off the Taunton
Road, for his part in a ‘horrific villany’ at nearby Pyrland Hall,
watched by a large crowd from all around.
The Carnell family worked mills in Kingston
and Broomfield during the 1800s and up to
1960. Robert died of pneumonia in 1884 after
struggling with excessive floodwater for 2
weeks. Of the two brothers working there in
the 1900s one was a Chapel Lay Preacher, the
other a staunch churchman!
For many years an aggressive swan lived on the Mill Pond. ‘He
would not suffer any intruder, not even the children’s paper boats!’
The present Swan pub apparently kept the memory of it when the
small cider house at Mill Cross moved to its site in the centre of the
village. (It was frequented by Cornish miners working at Raswell,
Broomfield, in early 1800s. In the 20th Century it once displayed a
5notice ‘No travellers served’ when many were encamped on
Broomfield Hill Common, not true gypsies, but scrap merchants.
Kingston Chapel on Greenway, now a residential property, once
important in village life, was built in 1821 to serve Non-Conformists
who had previously met in private houses. From a promising start
attendance gradually decreased, but it was saved from dilapidation
and re-opened in 1889. Soon there were 100 children in the Sunday
School and annual ‘May meetings’ with a known preacher became
so popular that a marquee giving additional accommodation was
needed, and a branch of the Band of Hope (Temperance Society)
was founded. But there were complaints about long sermons and a
notice in the pulpit asked that services be finished by 12.30pm and
8.45 pm! There were setbacks but the chapel closed in the 1960s in
spite of a re-dedication of members in 1952.
The majority of villagers was long engaged in
agriculture or allied trades, e.g. blacksmith, thatcher
etc. very different from today. In the 1920s and 30s it
was not easy to sell liquid milk, although some went
by rail to London in 17gallon churns. The Great
Western Railway was jokingly called ‘The Milky Way’.
Farmers were encouraged to make more butter and
cheese and dairy classes were held in the Village Hall
(built 1923), adults and older children being urged to attend. In
1938 they were held twice a year ‘serving quite a wide area’. Market
gardening grew popular with a ready market for the produce in
Taunton.
During a bad outbreak of the plague in Taunton in the 1500s the
Bishop of Winchester moved his Manor Court to Kingston (but to what
location?)

6Favourite Walks
This walk is
around the
parish of
Cheddon
Fitzpaine and is
about 2.4 km
(2.6 miles) and
has only gentle
gradients.
The walk starts
at the entrance
gates to
Cheddon
Memorial Hall.
With your back
to the hall, turn
left and follow
the road along for about 700m, taking great care along this road as
the traffic can be busy at certain times of the day. Turn right
opposite Cheddon Lawns and proceed south towards the church. At
the sharp left-hand bend of the road by the church turn right by the
footpath sign and follow the stone track round through a gate.
Continue along the track until you reach two more field gates,
having crossed a pretty stream. At the gates take the right hand
footpath and proceed westwards across the first field, through a
kissing gate and then across the next field before passing through
the second kissing gate on to a stoned track at Rowford. You will
immediately reach Lyngford Lane where you turn right and proceed
northwards past the village primary school, back to the entrance
gates of the memorial hall.
7Bear left on the road and continue up Pitchers Hill (take care as this
road can be very busy at times) towards Park Gate and the entrance
to Hestercombe, approximately 740m. Just before you reach the
junction take the footpath on your left and continue westwards
across 3 fields where you will reach a stile to the road at Upper
Cheddon. At the road turn left and follow the road southwards,
passing Manor Farm and Cheddon Corner for approximately 440m.
Just past the high garden wall of Cheddon Corner you will find a
field entrance and footpath on your left which you take, following
the track southeast towards the road. You pass a pretty pond
where you many glimpse a kingfisher.
At the road proceed straight ahead to the entrance gates to the hall
where you began the walk.

Across the Field……
A striking and colourful visitor to the garden is the jay. The smallest
of the crow family at 13½”. With its pinkish/grey/brown chest, a
white rump and throat, and wings of blue/white/black. There are
plenty of sparrows about and the long tailed tits bounce through
after a feed on the fat balls. The magpies seem to be resident and
the song thrush sings to us each evening.
The most unusual bird that I have ever
seen is the Hoopoe. It was many years
ago when we lived at the farm. It was
sitting on the front gate. I heard later
that it was also seen in Cheddon. It has
pink and brown plumage, with a big crest
like a Native American Indian headdress,
and boldly barred black/white wings. It
is the most exotic bird to be seen in
Britain. It comes across from the
continent and overwinters in Africa.
8The swifts zoom through – they were later coming this year.
Clearing the dead daffodils under
the wall was halted when we
disturbed a small slow worm. A
member of the lizard family, it was
only a youngster. Last year we saw a
large one in the same area. It is a
legless lizard and not a snake as it is
often thought to be.
We seem to have foxgloves everywhere. I grew some from seed –
cream ones – some are ok but some are white/cream at the top and
mauve at the bottom – very attractive and the bees like them.

From the Tractor Shed
“There’s Harvest Home and Christmas time
But tain’t no good to talk
The grandest day that we do know
Is when our Club do walk”
I grew up in the village of Westbury sub Mendip which has a
Friendly Society dating back to the 1770s. Every Spring Bank
Holiday, at the end of May, members of the Society march through
the village wearing blue sashes and carrying spears. A brass band
marches with them and a large banner is proudly carried.
I have memories of Club Day going back years. I was 4 in 1939 and
vividly remember the parade walking past the garden gate at home.
The parade started at the top of Westbury village and stopped along
the way at farms on the route. At every stop, cider would be drunk
from a double-handled mug… and there were six or seven stops!
Imagine the effect of that cider on the parading band! You could
9certainly hear them merrily playing their instruments as they moved
around the village. There was cider at Harry Phelp’s farm, Fred
Tucker’s farm, Shepherd’s farm and at Forrest Granville’s farm.
After parading past Westbury Cross and in the village square the
procession took a twenty-minute diversion to Frank Sealey’s farm.
This was a long slog and hard work in a northerly wind, particularly
for the flag bearer who was in danger of taking off! I remember this
well as I proudly carried the flag for many years – a tradition in the
Lovell family.
Eventually (after more cider) the
procession headed back to the village
for a service in Westbury church.
Anyone with a bladder weakened by all
that cider (and the free beer from the
Westbury Inn) would nip behind the
church to answer the call of nature.
They would then slip in quietly at the back of the church for the
service. For years there was some very green, well-watered grass
behind Westbury church!
A job centre wasn’t needed in those days. Farmers on the parade
route would spot likely workers who had joined the march. A
keenness for the free cider meant there were plenty of people
available for the haymaking in the area.

There will be further details in the August edition of Link-Up.
10Phyllis Priddice
My late mother, Phyllis Priddice, spent her childhood living with her
parents and sisters in a cottage at Volis. She attended school in
Kingston during the 1930's and spoke of walking across the fields.
She went to school with her sisters Doris and Pamela. She sang in
the church choir and attended church sometimes up to four times
on a Sunday.
When she left school at the age of fourteen she worked in the
village Post Office which was located in County stores.
When war broke out she was responsible for delivering telegrams
on her bicycle to residents of the village, sometimes with sad news
with the loss of a loved one. She spoke of looking out of her
bedroom window in the evening seeing Bristol a bright orange
colour as the Luftwaffe dropped its bombs.
Her father was in the home guard and once spoke of pulling a pilot
out of his cockpit after crashing in a field above Hestercombe.
She attended Dances at the village hall during the war and American
GI’s were often there.
Sadly she passed away at Pulsford Lodge last year. I wonder if any
readers of your magazine
would still be able to
remember those days and
remember her and her
family?
This is a photo taken during
the war years somewhere in
the village of Kingston. My
late mother is in the centre
of the picture but I have no
idea who the other two
ladies are.

11KSM Flower Show – Village Hall - 14th August 2021
Still looking good. We are
planning to hold this event on
Saturday August 14th. We will
of course keep the situation
under review but it looks very
promising. Schedules and
guidelines are available on the
Kingston St Mary website . www.kstm.uk or can be obtained by
contacting Annie Trolley on 01823 451312 or by email
annietrolley@gmail.com
In order to keep everyone ‘Covid’ safe we will need to make some
changes to how the event is run. We have looked at the current
guidance and planned how we would run the show but we would
like to review again, and make any further adjustments late in July.
Please look out for a further announcement in the August edition of
Link-Up.
Please do plan to come and enter the show or just visit to admire
the efforts of your friends, family and neighbours. Looking forward
to seeing you there.

13from Rev Mary ….
As I write (at the start of June) the opening up of our lives and
activities continues – I don’t know where we’ll be in July and beyond
when you read this – what I do know is that out of the pandemic we
have seen society think more carefully about loneliness, justice, the
environment and spirituality (to name but a few!)
The church – the people that make up the church – has been
reflecting on just the same things. As the freedom to meet
increases, we are keen to “build back better” like so many others.
We are spending time this Spring and Summer listening to each
other, to the community and to God about the best ways to do that
so that the church can be Good News to the community…...
Here are some things we have been thinking about (there are many
more!):
• How could we better use our buildings and grounds? (You
may not know we are looking into becoming an “eco-
church.”)
• We are open to all sorts of conversations and to thinking
about our spiritual journeys – would you like to join in?
• Could we help you to mark significant moments in your lives;
at the birth of a child, to publicly acknowledge your
relationships and to mark the end of a life with real dignity?
• Could the church community be a focus for groups to meet?
• Could the church be a better focus for community
celebrations throughout the year (e.g. Christmas, New Year,
Valentine's Day, Mothering Sunday, Easter, Pentecost,
Harvest, Remembrance...)?
• Would you value a group to specifically discuss issues of
religion, ethics, politics, lifestyle.?
• Are there questions you wished you'd asked years ago? - it’s
never too late!
14• Would you welcome activities which are more social than
specifically faith-based: food, entertainment, choirs, bell-
ringing, walking, book groups...?
We need you to help us understand …..
• Do any of the above spark an interest in you – if so, which?
• How might our building and grounds help build community?
• How can we help you explore your spirituality – and how
might we learn from each other?
• Is there anything else you would like to say?
I really look forward to hearing from you!

Gardening Club
Update from the Committee – May 2021
Currently, the Gardening Club is
suspended due to the Covid-19 lockdown
restrictions. These restrictions were due to be lifted on 21 June
2021 however, the alarming growth of infections of the new Delta
variant in certain areas of the Country, could possibly result in the
implementation of further restrictions.
The Committee has agreed that due to this uncertainty, and the
logistical problems of sourcing speakers and arranging garden visits
at present, the way forward is to further suspend the Gardening
Club until March 2022 when it is envisaged that we will reopen with
a remodelled and better Gardening Club and Committee.
16This delay gives us the time to completely rethink what we would
like from our Gardening Club and to address matters. There had
been concern with the age profile, in that the Club would not be
viable soon if we didn’t grow and attract new members. The
Committee agreed that the format needs to change in order to
attract these new members.
During Lockdown the media reported a renewed public interest in
gardening with people researching how to cultivate their gardens
and grow produce. We feel that we should reach out to these
prospective gardeners with no previous gardening experience too.
There is definitely scope to attract members from further afield to
swell our numbers which in turn would mean we could afford really
good speakers.
So we have decided to canvass our members and any potential new
members, as to the way forward. We would be grateful to hear
your views so we can plan for the future using your feedback. Please
post your views via email to: moiratownsend@btinternet.com or
mail them to:

The Kingston St Mary Family fun cycle
ride is back!!! KAPACC is organising
another a cycle ride around the lanes
of Kingston and Nailsbourne. As lots
of people found out during the past year, cycling is healthy, good for
17the environment and fun. The ride is suitable for groups and single
riders (all abilities and ages are welcome). However you must be
able to use brakes correctly and have a bike that is in good working
order. Plenty of time to get ready! There will be a choice of routes
to suit your ability and fitness. You will need to register using the
link below. If you do decide to cancel at a later date please be so
kind as to tell us.

KSM Environmental issues -You may know me as the litter lady
of KSM! I’m happy with that! I also represent the Kingston
Community Partnership for other environmental issues and I report
to them and the Parish Council about overgrown hedges, weeds,
dog fouling etc. On one of my recent walks, I cut through Sawyers
Leigh and was saddened to see a lot of dog poo (in fact 5 separate
lots!) on the central green and even outside the primary school!
The green is a playing area used by children. It
is a fact that children are particularly at risk due
to roundworm eggs (toxocara canis), that can
exist in dog faeces. It is an offence for a dog
owner not to clean up after their dog.
“Dog owners or walkers must, by law, immediately remove their
dog’s poo from land where people have the right to walk or enjoy. If
you can’t find a dog waste bin you must take the bag home and
18dispose of the waste appropriately (quote from South West &
Taunton website)
You can report online now if someone is not picking up after their
dog, or you can report a heavily fouled area or if you spot a full or
damaged dog bin - this can be done via the 'something else' section
of the general enquiry online form.
https://www.somersetwestandtaunton.gov.uk/dog-control/dog-
fouling/
I know most dog owners are responsible. I will also say that I have
been a dog owner myself in the past so I’m not anti-dogs - I am just
very sad to see it happening here and in other areas such as the
Spinney. It was good to hear recently that another dog waste bin
has been approved by the Parish Council for the Mill Cross area.
Like litter – dog poo is a blot on the landscape. We have become
more efficient at reporting flytipping on-line so let us do the same
for reporting dog fouling.

Broomfield Parochial Church Council
Broomfield PCC held its Annual Meeting of Parishioners and APCM
in the Church on Sunday, 30th May, immediately following a short All
Age service. The meeting was chaired by Dr. John Ogle.
Mrs. Bez Purdy had decided that the time had come for her to stand
down as Churchwarden after an amazing 20 years in the role. Bez
was presented with some flowers, a cheque (made up of donations
from well-wishers) and a letter of thanks from Bishop Ruth. The PCC
expressed their sincere thanks to Bez for all her hard work during
her time as Churchwarden. Bez said she was “overwhelmed” by
everyone’s kindness and generosity. Thankfully, Bez will be
continuing to support Broomfield Church as a member of the PCC.
Unfortunately, four members of the PCC have decided, for various
reasons, that it is time to step down – Miss Margaret Cavill, Mrs.
19Andrea Duncan, Mrs. Dorothy Kirwan and Dr. John Pether. The PCC
are extremely grateful to Margaret, Andrea, Dorothy and John for
all their hard work and support for Broomfield Church whilst
members of the PCC. We are pleased that Mr. Jim Duncan has
offered to take his wife’s place and he was, therefore, duly elected
as a member of the PCC. Dr. John Ogle was also re-elected onto the
PCC, which is now a very small group and ideally needs a few more
members. The PCC are extremely grateful to John for all his hard
work to enable work on the Restoration Project to start in July.
I have agreed to stand as Churchwarden for the coming year and am
also continuing as Secretary for the time being. Hopefully, a new
Secretary might come forward in due course.
Mr. John Earp was re-elected as Treasurer and Mr. Robbie Mackay
was re-elected as the Independent Examiner of the Accounts. The
PCC thanked them both for their work, supporting Broomfield
church.
As mentioned above, the PCC only has three members now, in
addition to the ex. officio roles of Rector, Associate Vicar,
Churchwarden/Secretary and Treasurer. A lot of PCC business is not
necessarily 'religious' but concerns the building and the
administration to help keep it running. You may be a non-
worshipper but love/have an interest in Broomfield Church – if so,
would you be interested in joining the PCC as a member or acting as
an ex. officio Secretary? Please get in touch with either Rev’d. Mary
Styles (01823 451189) or me (01278 671118) if you think you can
help. There are 24 people on the revised Church Electoral Roll, only
7 of whom are resident in the parish.
Ann Powell, Secretary/Churchwarden
Another Search for Relatives!
There are two box tombs in Broomfield churchyard which need
repairing as they are gradually collapsing due to their age. They
both appear to belong to the Gardner family. The lettering on the
20tombs is very indistinct now, but when it was still fairly legible it
appeared to show that the following people had been buried there:
John Gardner, Magdalen Gardner, Christopher Gardner and another
John Gardner and Christopher Gardner (all died between 1673 and
1770).
There is mention in the Parish Register that they are related to
Henry Thorne (died 1722) and John Thorne (died 1728).
Although the tombs are safe at the moment, the PCC would like to
repair them to ensure that they do not become dangerous in the
future. If possible, we would like to consult any relatives who might
still be living in the area before any work is carried out. These
burials obviously took place around 350 years ago so it’s a bit of a
‘long shot’, but if you are related to the Gardner/Thorne family or
know anyone who is, please contact me on 01278 671118 or

KINGSTON ST MARY PARISH COUNCIL (www.kstm.uk)
The Parish Council was pleased to welcome District and County
Councillors and a member of the public to its June meeting.
LOCAL GOVERNMENT REORGANISATION
Both the Chair and Clerk of West Monkton Parish Council were also
welcomed to discuss the creation of a Local Community Network
(LCN). LCNs are a feature of both the unitary proposals currently
being considered in the reorganisation of Somerset’s Local
Government. The Parish Council agreed that there is sufficient
commonality (e.g. rurality, environmental protection, climate
change, etc.) to work with West Monkton, and other nearby Parish
Councils, to explore and develop this initiative in greater detail.

objection to a replacement summerhouse at Fulford House in
21Yarford Lane and this Planning Application (Ref. 20/21/0015) was
unanimously supported by the Parish Council.
A Planning Application for the construction of an agricultural
building to store machinery and fodder at Grove Farm in Pickney
(Planning Ref. 20/21/0016), was also unanimously supported by the
Parish Council.
CLIMATE EMERGENCY
To facilitate active travel and reduce emissions, the Parish Council
approved expenditure to introduce lower speed-limits along
Kingston Road and through the Village. A combination of recently
received infrastructure funding, and the Council’s own reserves,
facilitated this traffic scheme, which will make Parish roads safer for
walkers and cyclists and will have a positive impact on the local
environment.
PLAYING FIELD
The Playing Field Management Committee submitted a revised
Constitution for consideration by the Parish Council. This document
also included updated Rules and Regulations for persons using the
Playing Field, together with a Hiring Agreement and Conditions for
using the Pavilion. The Playing Field’s updated Constitution was
approved by the Parish Council and can be viewed on the Kingston
St Mary website www.kstm.uk
GOVERNANCE
The Parish Clerk presented the Internal Audit Report and the Annual
Governance and Accountability Return for approval. The Parish
Council was pleased to note that its independent auditor advised
that no matters of non-compliance were identified during the audit.
The Parish Council would like to thank the Parish Clerk, Katie
Gibbins, for her diligence in managing the Parish Council’s affairs
and finances.
