IL MONDO A KM 0 - Smiling International School
This year’s Early Years Project is ‘Il Mondo a km 0’, an Italian title and play on words,
which renders the idea of the world being on our doorstep. This concept starts with
who we are and where we come from.

                               IL MONDO A KM 0
Through a variety of cross-curriculum projects, inter-class activities and trips, suitable for each age
group, the Early Years children are going to explore their own town and surrounding countryside.
They are going to discover its history, traditions, places of interest, cuisine and local produce. The
project will encourage the children to find out more about the people who live in Ferrara including
family and friends, their homes and jobs, and to discover what makes Ferrara a vibrant community.

The project will develop further by exploring different countries around the world. The children will
learn about traditional Italian celebrations as well as Thanksgiving, Chinese New Year and many
more. The Early Years classes will also take part in International Week, an important event, which is
organized by Smiling every year.
IL MONDO A KM 0 - Smiling International School
Through these projects ‘Il Mondo a km 0’ aims to develop an interest for our own town and help
the children feel part of a community, be it in class or on a larger scale at school, which in turn is an
important part of Ferrara’s community. It also aims to develop a curiosity for people from other
parts of the world and to value differences and similarities. However far away we are, it is these
which brings us together at ‘km 0’ making the world a smaller place.

The first part of the Butterflies’ project investigates who they
are. The children will talk about themselves: their characteristics, their preferences and hobbies.
The children will talk about where they live in Ferrara, describe their homes and present their family
and pets to their peers. At the same time, they will listen to their friends and ask questions to find
out more about them. Through these activities, some of the children will discover that they share
the same interest or have something in common with another. Likewise, differences will create
intrigue and curiosity towards others. By getting to know each other, they can have a better
understanding of each other. Consequently, they can work together and feel part of a community in
class and at school.

Ferrara: Past, Present & Future
The second part of the project explores Ferrara and its famous monuments. The children will delve
into the fascinating past of Ferrara’s Estense family and compare family life to their own lives today.
They will discover how Ferrara has grown over time and jobs have changed. As they ‘visit’ Ferrara,
in person and on the Smart Board, they will share personal experiences of people, places and
events in their town. The children will also begin to give ideas about what they would change about
Ferrara and how they could improve it. They will explore themes such as recycling, looking after our
school and town and what makes a good citizen.

The World is a Small Place
As the project develops, the children will learn about different countries, their celebrations,
language, music and food, which are linked to friends and teachers in their class. Through this
project, the children will discover interesting differences and similarities, unexpected and
astonishing facts, amazing and wonderful places and people.
During the year, the Butterflies will focus in particular on China as the Butterflies start a fascinating
Chinese cultural project as part of their curriculum. Chinese New Year has also become a heart-felt
tradition for Smiling and is celebrated every year, throughout the whole school.
An exciting Skype project with a Primary school in the UK and one in Holland is a perfect
opportunity for our children to see school life in another country. It is also a special occasion to
exchange interesting information and facts about themselves, each other’s schools, traditions and
countries.

                                            Objectives
The end-of-year objectives listed under each topic are “on-going”, in that they will be achieved by a
series of staged smaller objectives. Many stem from Nursery and continue into First Grade, thereby
reinforcing the link which this special year provides between Early Years and Primary school. These
objectives are adapted and changed to answer the needs of the individual child.
