Luzia Travado, PhD, MSc, ClinPsych, is clinical health psychologist specialized in Psycho-oncology.
She is clinician and researcher of Psycho-Oncology at the Champalimaud Clinical Centre (CCC),
Champalimaud Foundation, Lisbon, Portugal (2011-), with a main focus in breast cancer. She has a
career of more than 30 yrs initiated at Hospital S. José-Central Lisbon Hospital Centre, where she
was Chief of Clinical Psychology and has pioneered health psychology by developing psychosocial
programs for clinical populations with chronic conditions including cancer (1985-2012), namely an
innovative and successful psychosocial care program for breast cancer patients. She served as
Adviser for the National Coordinator for Oncological Diseases in Portugal (2007-2011), contributed
for the Nat’l Cancer Control Program, the Cancer Roundtable of the Portuguese EU Presidency, and
conducted a National Pilot Communication Skills Training Program for Oncologists; she represented
Portugal at the European Partnership on Action Against Cancer (EPAAC, 2009-2014), and led the
Psychosocial Oncology Action under this partnership. She has been actively participating in various
European initiatives, conferences and projects regarding improvement of European cancer policies,
profiling psycho-oncology and recommendations for the inclusion of psychosocial care in patients’
treatment to improve their outcomes (e.g., European Cancer Conference-Slovenian EU Presidency
2008, EPAAC, Cancer Control in Europe (2014-2017), European Commission Initiative on Breast
Cancer (ECIBC 2013-), European Guide for Quality National Cancer Control Programs, among
others). Served as President of the International Psycho-Oncology Society (IPOS: 2014-2017),
currently past-president and was Chair of the IPOS World Congress of Psycho-Oncology held in
Lisbon 2014. Founder and former president of the Viva Mulher Viva Association on breast cancer.
She was cover story at Cancer World in the Nov-Dec 2011 issue. Member of the ESO Core Faculty
team, and ESMO-Preceptorship programmes, she teaches psycho-oncology and communication
skills. As a researcher she has been participating in various European and Int’l funded projects.
Currently she is Principal Investigator (PI) of a national funded project regarding Distress and
regional brain metabolism in MBC patients, and also of an int’l funded project for developing new
psychological care resources for MBC patients in Portugal. She has many scientific papers published
in Int’l peer-review journals and book-chapters, having served as Specialty-editor for The Breast,
and reviewer for various scientific journals, also founder and Editorial Board member of the Journal
of Psychosocial Oncology Research and Practice, official journal of the International Psycho-
Oncology Society.

 Clinical activities

 NHS: Hospital S. José and Central Lisbon Hospital Centre (1985-2012)

• Luzia began her career as a clinical psychologist, in the field of health psychology, in 1985, working
  for a central hospital in Lisbon belonging to the National Health Service (NHS) – Hospital S. José.
• Clinical populations and appointments (1985-2012) - trauma, acute and chronic physical diseases:
  severely burned patients – Burn Unit; head and neck cancer patients; spinal-cord injury patients;
  amputees; stroke; cerebral-vascular multidisciplinary consultation group; attempted suicide cases;
  victims of accidents with lost relatives of friends; hospitalization behaviors; dependencies;
  rehabilitation; non-compliance behaviors; breast cancer cases and multidisciplinary treatment and
  care team; morbid-obesity cases and multidisciplinary treatment and care team; head and neck
  cancer cases and multidisciplinary team; assisting doctors in breaking bad news situations; HIV and
  AIDS cases; palliative care cases and multidisciplinary team; other chronic and/or life-threatening

 Champalimaud Clinical Center (2011-):

• 2011-2013 started the Psycho-oncology Consultation at the Breast Unit, in part-time, seeing mostly
  breast cancer patients but also patients from other tumour sites.
• 2013-2017 full-time appointment as head of Psycho-oncology Service.
• Delivers psychosocial cancer care for patients in psycho-oncology consultation during
  chemotherapy outpatient clinic when needed, and during hospitalization in special cases; patients
  are referred to Psycho-oncology by medical or nursing staff but also can be self-referred;
• Portfolio of more than 1100 patients, the majority are cancer patients but also family members
  (partner, parents, children, other); the majority of the cases are breast cancer patients (60% of
  total), the rest are patients from other tumour sites (gynae, lung, digestive, urology, hemato);
  patients are seen any time they need during their cancer journey (e.g., before, during or after
  treatment, survivorship, recurrence, advanced or end-of-life), family members as well including
  bereavement;
• Delivering psycho-oncology specialized care, the Psycho-oncology Consultation receives also
  patients from other institutions, along with our regular patients from CCC
• Participation in the Breast Unit MDTs tumour board meetings, research meetings, consensus
  meeting for the BU clinical guidelines; accreditation meetings and other; the Breast Unit has
  international accreditation since 2016.
• Educational sessions with the nursing teams in the use of the Distress Thermometer as a screening
  tool for distress in cancer patients to use regularly in the clinic
• Educational sessions on improving communications skills with patients and families for the medical
  professionals and also for the non-medical staff
• Sessions on reducing burnout for the Breast Unit healthcare professionals
• Chair of the XIV World Congress of Psycho-oncology and Psychosocial Academy of the International
  Psycho-Oncology Society, organized the opening ceremony at the Auditorium of the Champalimaud
  Foundation, under the auspices and hosted by the President of the Foundation, October 2014

The Quality Assurance Scheme Development Group (QASDG) is developing the European Quality
Assurance Scheme for Breast Cancer Services (the European QA scheme) to set common quality
and safety requirements for person-centred breast cancer services in Europe. The scheme will
cover all the processes of breast cancer care (screening, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation &
supportive care, follow-up & survivorship care and palliative care) and will be underpinned by the
accreditation legal framework and evidence from guidelines.

European Partnership on Action Against Cancer (EPAAC): Nominated by the Director-General of
Health as the Portuguese representative at the European Partnership on Action Against Cancer
(2009-2014), proposed by the National Cancer Program Director. Leader of the Psychosocial
Oncology Action under WP7 on Health Care under the European Partnership on Action Against
Cancer (EPAAC) co-financed by the European Commission (2011-2014) (www.epaac.eu) and its
deliverables; under EPAAC collaborated as specialist in different areas namely in the development
of the Psychosocial Oncology Care chapter of the European Guide for Quality National Cancer
Control Programmes.

Cancer Control in Europe: Collaboration in the new co-financed program by the European
Commission Cancer Control in Europe (CANCON: www.cancercontrol.eu) for the area of psycho-
oncology in the workpackage of ‘Survivorship and Rehabilitation’. The ultimate aim will be to
develop a European Guide on Quality Improvement in Comprehensive Cancer Control (2014-2017).

Member of the I&D Center of the Institute of Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering, Faculty of
Sciences, University of Lisbon, Lisbon, Portugal

National/Portuguese Cancer Control Program: Adviser to the National Coordinator of Oncological
Diseases in Portugal (2007-2011), has collaborated in the development of the National Cancer
Control Program, particularly in the area of Psycho-Oncology, developed and implemented the

Coordinator of the grant attributed by Gulbenkian Foundation to the project ‘Organization and
Development of Palliative care in Hospital S. José’ (2003-2007; 50,000€). She wrote the grant and
coordinated the Training Program that trained a multidisciplinary team of 6 doctors, 6 nurses, 2
psychologists and 1 physiotherapist, in Palliative Care (PC), theory and practice, which fostered PC

National R&D project coordinator

• DistressBrain Project:
Principal investigator of the research project Distress and regional brain metabolism: a correlational
study in metastatic breast cancer patients conducted at the Breast Unit of the Champalimaud Clinical
Center (CCC). This project has a budget of 158.710€ is funded through state government funds
competitively awarded by FCT (the Portuguese research funding agency: www.fct.pt; PTDC/MHC-
PSC/3897/2014; 2016-2019). This project lead by Psycho-oncology, gathers specialists in Nuclear
Medicine, Oncology at the CCC, specialists in immunology of IGC at Fundação Gulbenkian and from
biomedical engineering from Institute of Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering, Faculty of
Sciences, University of Lisbon, Lisbon, Portugal and also the special collaboration of Prof. Michael
Antoni, international well-known specialist in psycho-immunology from the University of Miami at
Sylvester Cancer Center, Miami.

Dr. Travado was a leader and coordinator of the Psychosocial Oncology Action of WP7 on Health
Care, under the European Partnership on Action Against Cancer (EPAAC), a Joint Action co-financed
by the European Commission (2011-2014) (www.epaac.eu). Under this action conducted a survey
for (i) Mapping the psychosocial needs and resources in EU countries; (ii) Developed an educational
training tool to be replicated; (iii) Piloted the training in 1 underserved country. She further
contributed with a chapter on Psychosocial Oncology Care for the European Guide for Quality
National Cancer Control Programmes, which serves as a reference document for European

European Commission Initiative on Breast Cancer (ECIBC) (2015-2019):
member of the expert group of the Quality Assurance Scheme Development Group (QASDG)
selected by the European Commission, integrating the expert working group

Quality Assurance Scheme for Breast Cancer Services (the European QA scheme) to set common
quality and safety requirements for person-centred breast cancer services in Europe. The scheme
will cover all the processes of breast cancer care (screening, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation &
