We would like to begin by acknowledging the Traditional
Custodians of the lands on which we gather today, and
pay our respects to their Elders past and present.

We extend that respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait

THE EVIDENCE BASE
            • The Barriers

• Knowledge & Understanding (from men)

           • A skills deficit…

      • Your anecdotal evidence?
• Shift in “stigma” around talking about mental health.

SOME GOOD • 10% increase in men seeking help over the past 10 years.
NEWS TO
CONSIDER… • Your behaviour influences the behaviour of those around you –
but it requires us to get comfortable with being uncomfortable.

            • Increased recognition of need for a ‘gendered lens’ in men's
              health treatment and support.

            • Increasing number of men’s specific health services.

RECOGNISE
What behaviour change have you noticed?
(what warning lights are flashing on the dashboard)

When & Where will you start the conversation?

Who could you refer to if needed?
RESPOND
         • Act early, with curiosity and compassion
             • Activity based (e.g., Walk & Talk)
                • Avoid “shoulds and musts”
    • Focus on behaviour change, AND highlight your
                            concern?
(e.g., "You normally call me once a week to check in, but you’re
not doing that as much lately. I’m worried about you and would
like to know what's going on for you at the moment?")

     • Did you get a Redirect? Organise a time soon to
                          RECONNECT
RESPOND (cont.)
         • This IS NOT about you solving the problem

• This is about letting someone verbalise the concerns that have
                       been worrying them

     • Engage (body language, minimize your distractions)

                       • Actively Listen

• Keep judgements to yourself (curiosity first – seek to explore)
REFER – Empower
             • CARE, don’t carry

      • Work with them to identify options

     • Coaching questions first & foremost

“What has worked for you previously?”
           “How can I support you?”
REFER – Support Options

RECONNECT
• Negotiate a plan & follow up your conversation before you
                          wrap up.

               • Nurture & Nudge over Nag
(concern over criticism; no “should & musts”)

                   • CARE, don’t carry
