Minari & the Experiences of Asian Americans May is Asian Heritage Month when we take a moment to recognize the contributions of those descending from the Asian continent. From Japan to the Near East, from Russia to India, Asia is a centre of diversity, and pan-Asian culture is part of the Canadian story. So, let's pause for a moment and think of the many contributions Asian Canadians have made to our country. This Sunday May 23 is also the Feast of the Pentecost, a time to remember the birth of the church and when the followers of Jesus spread the message of God’s love in a multiplicity of languages. So, to mark these two occasions together, this Sunday Rev. Jeff Rock will preach on “Minari”, the Academy Award Best Picture nominated film, as part of our Reel Human Rights Sermon Series. The movie tells the story of a Korean family who move to rural Arkansas to establish a farm and their subsequent trials and tribulations of rural life. Minari captures both the experiences of Asian immigrants in America, and the struggles of keeping a family together in trying times. One film critic called Minari “a stunningly intimate family portrait universal in tenderness”, which describe both the movie, and the story of the birth of the Church we celebrate at the Pentecost. Because we at MCC Toronto are a universal church with people of many different backgrounds, beliefs, orientations, and identities; and yet we are also a united community that comes together in our shared desire for love, wholeness, spirituality, and Human Rights for all. In the last year, incidences of anti-East Asian racism have skyrocketed around the world including here in Canada and our own City of Toronto. Asian Heritage Month is an occasion to stand up against racism in all its forms, especially East Asian racism. MCC Toronto will continue to pursue Human Rights for all. Sunday Service Musical Guest Monica Schroeder is our Offertory Performer this Sunday! As a girl growing up in the Prairies, this Winnipeg singer/songwriter had only one ambition: to be a musician. Nominated twice for “Best Pop Recording” at the Western Canadian Music Awards, Monica has shared the stage with performers such as Jane Siberry, Gordon Lightfoot and the Cowboy Junkies. She has been featured in Billboard and Maclean’s magazines, and her
songs have been played on radio stations across North America, including the CBC and NPR. Moving from dynamic, full-bodied pop songs to simple piano/voice numbers, Monica’s recordings seek to blend acoustic elements with an electronic edge, while maintaining those qualities that draw people to her music – a beautiful voice and the ability to communicate on an emotional level with her audience.
