Student Fees:
The Constitution of the State of California requires that we provide a public education to you free of charge. Your right
to a free education is for all school/educational activities, whether curricular or extracurricular, and whether you get a
grade for the activity or class. Subject to certain exceptions, your right to a free public education means that we cannot
require you or your family to purchase materials, supplies, equipment or uniforms for any school activity, nor can we
require you or your family to pay security deposits for access, participation, materials, or equipment.

Under certain circumstances, students involved in extracurricular programs, clubs and/or sports may be required to

Academic Honesty Policy:
All students are expected to abide by the Mira Mesa High School Academic Honesty Policy which is clearly outlined in the
Student & Parent Handbook as well as posted online with school registration forms for students and parents to review.

Class Rules and Consequences:
1. Be on time.
2. Be prepared.
3. Be respectful
4. Act responsibly and participate

If you are late for class I will assign detention, call home or write a referral if you are unwilling to live with the consequence
of your actions. Your citizenship grade will be affected if you cannot curb your actions. Each tardy equals 30 minutes of
detention. An unexcused absence/truancy equals 60 minutes of detention. (See MMHS Citizenship Rubric)

Follows classroom rules means:
Every student is expected to follow the policies outlined on the MMHS Parent/Student Handbook. The following four
criteria will be used to determine whether or not the citizenship grade will be further reduced: participation in learning,
follows classroom rules, displays on-task behaviors and is respectful to others. Citizenship grades are issued (using the
Citizenship Rubric) every 6 weeks, which start at the beginning of every grading period. All unexcused absences must be
cleared within 72 hours.

Academic Grading Policy:
Assignments: ALL Assignments can be viewed on teacher google classroom website. Students and parents will be able to obtain
access through teacher sign-up directions.
 Writing assignments are based upon the Language Arts Common Core content standards and include narrative and reflective
essays, journal responses, creative writing, responses to literature, research reports, and practice writing for college entrance
    exams, job applications and resumes.
 Independent and assigned reading in a variety of literary genres. Students should expect to read at least 30 minutes every night
    for homework.
 Projects – including multi-media and oral presentations as well as dramatic readings and recitations of literature
 Tests, quizzes, and other assessments
 Class work, including group activities, taking notes, and other tasks to aid in comprehension and deeper understanding of the
    materials.

 Grades: Academic grades are cumulative throughout the semester, and are based upon points received for quality and
completion of tests, daily assignments, special projects, and participation in class/group discussions.

All work must be submitted on time! Skill-building work will be given an automatic 50% off for turning in late during the first
semester and will then be a zero second semester and Assessments will be given a 10% off for each day late.

***Students and Parents should gain access to Student and Parent Connect to access teacher grade book on a regular basis.***

Grades are given based on a total points system that allows assignments to be weighted. Grades will be awarded on the percent
of points possible using the following traditional scale:

                 A        =        100%-90%

                 B        =        89%-80%

                 C        =        79%-70%

                 D        =        69%-60%
F        =        59%-0%

The grading percentages for this class are:

*Academic Writing: Long (Essay or Paper) and Short (Paragraph) Processed and On-Demand Writing, including; Argument,

Make-up/Late Policy: All assignments must be turned in on the day they are due. All skill-building work will be given an
automatic 50% off and all Assessment work will be given 10% off for each day late. We live in a digital-online world in
which gaining information is simple and efficient. Even when ill please consult the electronic calendar, contact the
instructor or another class member to find out what you have missed and how to make up the assignment before you
return. Students with excused absences must discuss the assignments immediately upon returning to school. If you are
unable to attend class please send me an email, a ‘good faith’ attachment of the assignment, or have a friend deliver the
assignment in your place.

Tardies:
 Students must be in their seats when the bell rings. Any work missed (pop quizzes, tests, classwork) due to an unexcused tardy
may not be made up and the student will receive a zero.
 Tardy students will be assigned after-school detention per the school’s tardy policy. Detentions may be scheduled with the
teacher, and the student must report to serve detention by 2:30. All detentions must be served within three school days of the
    offense.
 Students’ citizenship grades will be lowered at the third tardy. 5 or more tardies or any unserved detentions will result in an
    automatic U for the semester.
Absences:
 If a student is absent it is his or her responsibility to collect any missed assignments either from the class website, another
student, or from the teacher (before or after class). Any handouts given during class can be downloaded directly from the class
website. Due to this accessibility there is no excuse to not have assignments in on time.
 Any assignments, tests or quizzes missed due to excused absences must be completed and turned in within the same number
of days absent of the student’s return.
Truancy:
 Daily attendance is essential for individual academic success. Students who arrive more than 29 min. late are marked absent
    and may be considered truant.
 Absences that are not cleared through the attendance office within 3 days will be considered truancies.
 Any work (homework, tests, quizzes, etc.) or deadlines (major projects, etc.) missed due to unexcused absences or truancies
may not be made up, and the students will receive a zero on the assignment(s).

Support Policy:
I am available if you have additional questions or need additional help.
Office Hours: Lunch, or by an appointment during football and lacrosse season. After school 2:30-315 out-of-season.

*Chronic absences(10%, or about 10 per semester) and tardies (even when excused) will result in a lowering of your
citizenship grade.
Participation in learning means:
1. Being on time. It is your responsibility to be on time each day. Much of instruction goes on at the very start of class

2. Being prepared. You are required to come to class with a binder that contains paper, pencils, pens and any materials or
handouts that I have required for a specific unit. Assignments/homework will not be accepted late. I will post dates on the
board so you are aware of due dates. Assignments done in class cannot be made up unless you have and excused absence.
It is your responsibility to ask for missing assignments the day you return. Failure to bring in appropriate materials will
also affect citizenship.

3. Being responsible. Act responsibility and we will get along. If you feel frustrated or bothered by something I have said
or done please feel free to discuss your concerns with me at the appropriate time. I respect and care about each of my
students. I am available by phone, email, or appointment. I am often in my classroom after 3:30 if you should need, help,
tutoring or to discuss assignments.

Displays on task behavior means:
Students ask questions, are actively engaged in learning, and regularly participate in classroom discussions.

Respectful to others means:
You will be required to act respectfully toward your teacher and fellow students. No food or drink, other than water, is
allowed during class time. Cellphone, earphone, and other electronic use, other than the provided Google Chromebooks,
is allowed in class and will be taken away for the remainder of class and or the school day. Please deposit trash, remove
your hat and lower your hoods before entering class. Each student must dress in an appropriate manner. (See MMHS
Student Handbook)
