JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2023 New Beginnings in 2023 for the Gold Coast Library Community On December 8th, 2020 the Gold Coast Public Library Community approved a bond resolution allowing for the purchase of land and the construction of a new Library building for the community. The Board of Trustees is very happy to report that, after a thorough process, site plan approvals have been received from both the Town of Oyster Bay and Nassau County that allow the project to move forward. We would like to thank everyone for their patience during this process and the Town of Oyster Bay and Nassau County for all the hard work they put in helping us to move this project forward for the community. Once building permits are received, and if the weather allows, it is anticipated that construction will begin in late January and continue through 2023. Your Library is more than just books. People of all ages are using the library to enrich their daily lives: attending programs, stopping by to enjoy meeting friends and neighbors, and increasingly taking advantage of rapidly expanding digital services. The Library Board and Staff are committed to making your new Library facility a vibrant center for everyone in the Community and continuing to strive to deliver excellent library services at the most reasonable cost. Library Awarded $200,000 in 2022 NYS Library Construction Aid On October 18th, the New York State Education Department awarded $34 million to 223 public libraries and systems statewide to support construction and renovation projects. These funds help libraries construct new buildings, create additions, update electrical wiring and computer technology, improve broadband infrastructure, meet energy- efficiency standards and renovate facilities to provide full accessibility to library users with disabilities and create meeting spaces to accommodate community needs. We are excited to report that the Library's Application for Aid toward the purchase of land for the new library facility has been approved in the amount of $200,000. The Library Construction Aid program is a portion of the New York State's Budget that is renewed on an annual basis. The Library Board is grateful to our New York State Assembly and Senate representatives who have fought hard to make sure this program is well funded. In the past, the Gold Coast Public Library has received smaller awards that have funded portions of projects including the purchase of new security cameras and the replacement of the current Library roof. The Library Board and Director will continue to explore opportunities to apply for funding for construction needs now and into the future. 50 Railroad Avenue, Glen Head, NY 11545 • Phone: 516-759-8300 • Fax: 516-759-8308 www.goldcoastlibrary.org

GOLD COAST MEMORIES Townsend Scudder Scudders Lane – which runs from Mott’s Cove to Glen Cove Avenue in Glen Head – was named after Townsend Scudder (1865-1960). Born in Northport, Scudder later resided in Glen Head where he ran a 950-acre strawberry and asparagus farm. But farming was just one of his many pursuits. After graduating from Columbia Law School, he held the position of corporation counsel for Queens County from 1893 until 1899. He served two terms as a congressman and was later appointed a State Supreme Court Justice. As a jurist, he had reluctantly presided at the sensational 1928 murder trial of Ruth Snyder and Henry Judd Gray. At its end, he sentenced both to death in the electric chair at Sing Sing prison, though he was personally opposed to the death penalty. Scudder was also an avid breeder of blue-ribbon dogs. Over a span of 80 years, his entries won more than 1,000 prizes. He kept as many as 70 cocker spaniels at his Glen Head estate. It was perhaps in his role as Parks Commissioner that Scudder left his most lasting mark on Long Island. The establishment of Jones Beach as a State Park had been opposed by property owners who fought the acquisition of certain lands. Townsend Scudder's defense of creating the road that leads to the beach - broadcast on radio before a referendum of Nassau County residents – is credited as making the difference in gaining public approval for the acquisition of the land. When Scudder died in 1960, a plaque was dedicated at the Jones Beach amphitheater. It reads: Townsend Scudder: Eminent Jurist, Conservationist and Promoter of International Good Will 11
