16Penalties and Sanctions
At New College, we believe in a flexible system of penalties and sanctions. Our goal is to maintain a disciplinary system that can
adapt to the needs of the individual situation. The following is a list with explanations of New College sanctions which may be
used independently or in combination to enforce the Occupancy Agreement.
Verbal Warning:
Issued by a Don/Don-on-Duty reminding you of the rules of residence. Dons may record verbal warnings in their weekly logs
which are submitted to ORSL, but they are often used as a gentle reminder of the rules.
Written Warning:
Formally submitted to the resident by the Assitant to the Dean, Residence Life, it should detail the events that transpired and
will be accompanied with a request for a meeting with the ADRL. Written warnings are placed in the resident’s file by ORSL.
Generally, a written warning is issued when conduct is egregious enough to merit official documentation.
Behavioral Contract:
Used in cases where the resident has habitually abused residence rules, or where a single act was harsh enough to merit this
measure. Behavioral contracts tighten the residence rules in relation to the resident, and are tailored to deal with the issue
in question. For example, a student who frequently gets inebriated and rowdy would be prohibited from being inebriated in
residence. A violation of this contract may lead to further imposition of penalties including, but not limited to, eviction from
residence.
Suspension of Privileges:
One of the penalties that may be included as part of a behavioral contract or used independently. These are issued in writing
by the office and may include limits being placed on the student’s right to access certain areas of the College. For example, if a
resident damages property on the 3rd floor of a building, a suspension may involve restricting the student’s access to that floor.
Fines:
In specific cases, the College has the right to charge students for behavioural misconduct. Fines will be issued with notice to
the student via ACORN.
Residence Probation:
In severe cases where residents have engaged in prohibited conduct, they may be placed on residence probation. Probation
means that if the resident violates any further rules of New College, including violating a behavioural contract, they will be asked
to leave residence within 24 hours.
Denial of Readmission:
If a resident has been put on notice (e.g. numerous written warnings) by the College for violation of rules, ORSL may, at its
discretion, deny the student readmission for the following year.
Eviction:
In cases of severe misconduct a student may be asked to leave New College immediately, or within 24 hours. An example of
severe misconduct would be wanton destruction of College property.
Removal from a Community:
The Dean of Students may deem it necessary to remove a student from a community and place them in another community
within residence. These cases are rare and usually involve misconduct, but are effectively a second chance for a student to start
over and avoid the mistakes they made the first time around.
Restitution:
If the College incurs heavy damages through a resident’s misconduct or negligence, the College or the University may require
financial contribution from the student. For example, if a student triggers the sprinkler system by hanging clothes on them, the
University may collect the full cost of repairs from the student. We recommend that students purchase personal insurance while
living in residence.
