  STORY
“I heard really good reviews about
Andover from friends who had studied
there. The course only lasted one year,
I could combine it with childcare and it
was specialised to the subjects I wanted
to study so it seemed perfect for me.
The lecturers are so helpful and
understanding, they explain the work in
ways that actually make sense and will
go over it again until you understand it.
The Access course has helped me
prepare for my future as I’d like to go
to university to study midwifery and
I’ve been taught how to structure my
assignments, references and exams in
the way I’ll need. All the lessons have
been very informative and useful, the
staff have been amazing, and I’ve had
so much fun whilst learning at the same
time. I’ll always remember the friends I
made from my course. If you’re thinking
of coming to Andover I’d definitely say
go for it! I don’t think there’s another
college out there that will give you the
same experiences and opportunities.”

University level courses on your doorstep
HNCs are a great way to start on the degree level route
without having to commit to the full three or four years. They
are undergraduate qualifications but take less time and were
created to prepare you for specific careers.

What is an HNC?
A Higher National Certificate (HNC) takes one year to complete and is the
equivalent of the first year at university – a Level 4 qualification.
HNCs are vocationally focused and can lead straight on to a career. They’re a
great stepping stone up to a higher qualification, as you can choose to ‘top up’
to an HND or to a full bachelor’s degree.
Many students find this a far more affordable option than attending
university, with fees currently set at £4,800 a year.

UCS has given me
the confidence to say
‘I can do this’
Before joining Sparsholt I had been a legal
secretary for 10 years, so started as a mature
student. I have come away not only with
a degree but also with self‑belief in my
capabilities and increased confidence.

The lecturers were experienced,
knowledgeable, helpful and there were
always lots of debates and laughs along the
way. The advantages of a course at UCS have
to be the practical elements and study trips
which allowed us to see various habitats,
lots of wildlife and to talk to different people
within the industry.

I have always found Sparsholt a friendly
and welcoming place, and there’s always
so much going on. During each year of the
course we found work placements, this is
where I was introduced to the Game and
Wildlife Conservation Trust. In my second
year, I spent three weeks as a student
research assistant at the Trust and ultimately
found the job I love.

The position offered volunteering
opportunities, and this has successfully led
to a position as a Research Assistant for the
‘Waders for Real’ project in the Avon Valley,
a project aimed at reversing the decline of
breeding waders. Since I began my new job
I have experienced a great deal and have
been able to apply all the skills I learnt at
Sparsholt to my new position.
Jodie, Research Assistant
Wildlife Ecology and Conservation Graduate
The support was excellent! I also
enjoyed getting hands-on with
the animals. I learnt how to study
effectively and felt a lot more
prepared for my Foundation Degree.
