It’s Impossible to Prevent Wildfires.
So How Do We Prepare?
“Are there going to be more wildfires?” a young child recently asked the Vista Fire Prevention Officer reading stories at the
Vista Library. After pausing to consider how to make it clear to the young group that it’s not a matter of if another wildfire
occurs, but when and how. He described how it’s really about how Vista faces the wildfire seasons and prepares for them.
The Fire Prevention Officer explained that a wildfire can occur at any time and the firefighters train year round to stay prepared.
The City of Vista is committed to keeping the community safe, especially during an emergency. The Vista Fire and Sheriff
responders train and prepare year round. The City also upgrades fire and emergency
equipment and regularly hold drills to test emergency plans and train City of Vista
employees to be prepared and ready to assist in serving the community.
At the library, the students were enthralled with the fire engines and learned what
to take if their families are evacuated during a fire. For all of the Vista community,
learning how to adapt to a year round wildfire season, and understanding how
to ‘prepare for’ and ‘evacuate if’ are the most important preparations residents
should undertake in the upcoming wildfire season. Planning in advance is a
key step to living safer and smarter.

3 | CI TY NEW SPreparing Before Wildfire Threatens
With the concerns over the year around the potential for
wildfire, fire safety and preparedness are a year-round
practice in Southern California. High winds and low humidity
can transform a small, easily controlled fire into a catastrophic
event. Long before fire threatens, be prepared, ready, and
plan your evacuation.
• Maintain defensible space around your home
(ReadyForWildfire.org).
• Remove or isolate plants that are highly flammable.
• Make a list of items to take during an evacuation.
• Learn alternate ways out of your neighborhood in
case your usual way is blocked.
• Plan how to transport your pet if evacuated.
• Listen to local TV/radio news. Check the City’s
website at CityofVista.com or the City’s social
media sites for updates.
• Sign Up for Text or Email alerts at
ReadySanDiego.org/alertsandiego.
• If officials instruct you to leave, do so immediately.
Your family may not be together when disaster strikes,
and it is important to plan in advance how you will contact
one another; how you will get back together: and what
to do in different emergencies. Learn how to prepare,
plan and stay informed by visiting ReadySanDiego.org.

Wave Celebrates 25 years
of Summer Fun!
The Wave Waterpark opens Memorial Day
weekend. This season marks the park’s 25th year
of summer fun for its guests! In 1994, the City of
Vista opened The Wave Waterpark. Since then, the Wave has continued
to provide fun and memories to guests of all ages. In honor of the Wave’s
big Anniversary season, the park will be celebrating the summer with
fun, contests, and special events. A list of activities, offers, and events
is listed on the Wave’s website. The Wave recently received - for the
12th consecutive year - a StarGuard Elite 5-Star Rating for safety. This
prestigious honor emphasizes the City’s commitment to employee
training and safety at the park.

C I TY NEW S | 4Vista's Business Renaissance
Economic Development is a top priority for the City
of Vista. With the Ayers Hotel under construction in
the Business Park, the new Honda dealership set to
open soon on W. Vista Way, and the opening of the
Restoration Hardware outlet store in North County
Square, Vista continues to draw businesses that are
reshaping the city and creating an attractive and
vibrant community.
In addition, many new restaurants, including
Culichi Town, coming soon to Vista Village, have
popped up in or around downtown. Two new craft
breweries, Helia and Guadalupe, are also adding to
the thriving Vista scene. City officials will continue
strengthening the economy and bringing new jobs
to the community.

New Skate Facility Trains
Olympic Athletes
Vista recently welcomed a new addition to the local
skateboard scene, the California Training Facility
(CA l TF), an elite indoor skateboard center, located
in the Vista Business Park. It is the first of its kind
in the world, designed to meet the criteria of what
skateboarders will see in both major pro skateboard
contests and qualifying series, as well as the Olympic
courses leading up to the 2020 games in Tokyo. The
facility is already attracting elite talent from all over
the world to Vista, elevating the city’s profile on the
international stage and bringing visitors into the city.
The 28,000 square foot facility includes full size
competition street and park courses. It will serve
as a training ground for members of the US
Olympic skateboard team in preparation for the
2020 Summer Olympics and has begun to attract
Olympic skateboarding teams from across the
globe. The CA l TF also offers other programs such
as skate jams, facility rentals, and group or private
coaching programs and provides venues to teach
disadvantaged youth how to skate, further benefiting
the community.
